never thought it would take a flat piece of glass, but what do I know. interesting how a series of triangles can make up a dome. I am now thinking about building one(maybe a small scale for starters).

"fiberglass the whole unit"? Can you be more specific about what sort of process or coating you're referring to, for making the raised-lip version of the window watertight?

Hola Paul, nos podrías explicar como hacer la ventana que muestras al inicio del vídeo, la que se puede abrir, con sus medidas y tips. Muchas gracias

what I don't understand is why a whole nother triangle has to be added. I mean, what's stopping you from just adding a hinge?
I guess there might be concern about water dripping in. But I want to build a dome for a tree so I am not worried about leaks.

remembre that the wood in the dome itself is whats holding the construction together.

Now there's a couple of reasons one every time you add a screw or something to the frame you are weakening it, secondly increase in points of weakness where water can get into thirdly in the future if you want to change the window now you have to dismantle that entire part of the dome fourthly by making it a separate frame you can waterproof it more effectively by overlapping the flashing

The "rotate by 180 degrees" part only works if the panel is equilateral or isosceles. On a higher-frequency dome that could be an issue, right?

Yes you are correct, there are two ways to fix this though. If you made the windows upside down on the jig, marked them as windows so you don't mix them up. Or you can design your dome not to have scalene triangles (this is my preferred method) scalene triangles are not nice to work with because you have to have left and right hand versions and not mix them up. You can make higher frequency domes without scalene triangles, for example my 4v dome has only 4 unique equilateral/isosceles triangles (a standard 4v has 6 different triangles some of which are scalene) so it can be done.

Whot kind of elastic flashing would you recommend? It has to move like a hinge when windows open and close.

On polythene covered domes I use polythene to flash the window, on glass or perspex I use rubber, a bike inner tube cut down the centre works great, the flashing has to go under the panel above then over the top of the window panel, if you need more details let me know and I'll do a vid

Paul Robinson thanks. I have a poly dome but windows I made of polycarbonate and the panels around I want to exchange to polycarbonate too cos I need to drive a chimney thru the roof. Wanna heat the dome in hardest frosty times in winter and in spring. Poly flashing I have cos the constructor did it for me, I just want something longer lasting. A video would be great 👍

Hey, Paul. Could you point me toward the window hardware you use? I can't seem to find anything like it. Also, do you shorten the length of some struts in your plans? By a 1/16 or an 1/8th? Is this done intentionally?

OK I have made lots of different window openings, what I found worked best was normal hinges with a Quadilent Stay as an opening locking system. I have a tutorial here about windows: ua-cam.com/video/ObRKygAC7Hs/v-deo.html I found auto openers do work but they bend backwards in strong winds.

Honestly the hardest part is finding affordable triangular glass, you know you go online and look for an insulated piece of triangular glass and they want as much money as if you bought a whole Square window with trim and everything
