I was delighted to listen to this lovely radio adaption of Nevil Shutes book , which I read many years ago . I’ll be looking out for more of his work “ this side of the black stump !”
A very good story and lots of important issues raised and looked at squared between the eyes. Then still need to be scrutinized in the America of today and further afield.
Loved the Shropshire Lad poem. It seemed to me early on, that the American Stanton and the English David that something wasnt right but would turn out right in the end. Adventure in other countries is all well and good but... one can come to miss one's homeland's values like missing ourselves. Adjustment, is often impossible. Great story, sensitively acted by lovely actors. x
Well, I wasnt expecting this, and I loved it. Other than the non-PC references to illegitimacy, gins, yellow girls and blacks (understandable given when the play was written) this was great. Thanks.
Non pc? I see where ur coming from but yellow skins and blacks yeah I see that but being illegitimate that's not a problem is it as it's sadly life isn't it? Great play like u said and take care too ok. As an add on there is no place for racism at all but like u said this was 65' and things were different but wait ten years and racism got even worse, sadly.
Was definitely a different era & this was the bush, different folk. I married in 81 as a catholic my husband had to change faiths, otherwise both my parents & church would not support & yes I lived in the bush.
I like hearing vocab differences from the English speaking countries. In this play the Yank characters pronounce houston as “hoos-ton” whereas in the States we say “hue-ston”, and then there’s a whole salad bar of Australian words also!
A really good play and it in a way it sums up how these politicians look at us today as right wing fascists. This play to in all tense and circumstances shows the different qualities of how people from the "old country" adapted to their new lives in various countries, although I admit the Aussie family were of Irish ancestry not everyone who left these shores were bigots especially the true working class but maybe the people above us are the actual right wing fascists because they in this country and any colonial country set out to exploit the indigenous people and the people they drove from the shores of Great Britain
A plesent story, I remember Ed Bishop as commander Straker in UFO.
thanks for bringing a Neville Shute yarn back into my life

Brilliant play in every dept.
I've always loved Shute's work! What a great surprise this Sunday morning. Thanks!

In real life.....people are more concerned by real life things like life and death....not how somebody talks.
No Blasphemy though what a relief.
Great play .
Actually I hadn’t listened to most of the play, I see what you mean 🤭

It's amusing that these great British actors have such difficulty with the American accent.
Lovely ….. 🥾👒🦘🦎🦟

A great story. A great author. Too bad they didn't get into the whole IRA/Black & Tan plot line.
Goodness the aussie accent doesn't sound true but then it seems not many can do it. Great story anyways.
David Bishop. From UFO series from the late sixties.
Ed Bishop.
@@janiemason104 I stand corrected. Thanks👍
@@tanks1945 He was the rent-a-yank actor on the BBC of this era. No disrespect intended. He was a good actor.
Just no. This a long soap without redemption. Way back in 1955 and a radio play in 1965.
What do you mean?
