  • Carl August Peter Cornelius - German composer and music critic. Nephew of artist Peter Cornelius. The representative of the "Weimar school." The author of one of the prominent German comic operas "The Barber of Bagdad" (1858). Among other works by him have become very popular "Christmas Song" (1856). Translated into German opera libretto ("The maid-mistress" by Pergolesi and others).
    Soon began to study music and compose songs (many - on their own poetry). In 1844 - 1852's. Berlineu lived in his uncle's, working as a music journalist in Berlin a number of publications. In 1852 Cornelius moved to Weimar, where completed work on his first major work - the comic opera "The Barber of Baghdad." Then followed the period of his Viennese composer (1859-1864), where Cornelius finished his second opera "Cid" (1863) and became closely acquainted with Richard Wagner, whose work Cornelius defended and promoted in a number of articles. At the invitation of Cornelius Wagner in 1864 and moved to Munich, where he worked on the third opera, left unfinished. In addition to operas and songs, in the heritage of Cornelius has a number of choral works, string quartets, some sonatas.
