  • Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava, is a major Hindu festival celebrated primarily in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the most significant and widely celebrated festival in the region, particularly in Kolkata, where it is celebrated with grandeur and enthusiasm. Durga Puja usually falls in the Hindu month of Ashwin (usually September or October) and lasts for four to five days. The festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, who is considered the divine mother and the embodiment of female power (Shakti). Durga is depicted as a ten-armed goddess riding a lion, symbolizing her victory over the demon Mahishasura. Barajaguli Durga Puja is famous Durga Puja in Haringhata.
The main features of Durga Puja include:
    1. *Idol Worship:* Elaborate clay idols of Goddess Durga and other deities like Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kartik are created and worshipped. These idols are usually beautifully crafted and decorated.
    2. *Pandals:* Temporary structures known as "pandals" are set up to house the idols. These pandals are often artistic and thematic, with different artistic designs and decorations.
    3. *Festive Decorations:* The entire city, especially Kolkata, is decorated with lights, artworks, and colorful decorations. Artisans work diligently to create unique and intricate idols and pandal decorations.
    4. *Traditional Rituals:* The festival involves several rituals, including the "Bodhon" (unveiling of the idol), "Shasti" (the sixth day when the idol is brought to the pandal), "Saptami," "Ashtami," and "Navami" (the main days of worship), and "Dashami" (the farewell to the goddess).
    5. *Cultural Programs:* Durga Puja is not just a religious festival but also a cultural extravaganza. People participate in music, dance, and theater performances, and many art exhibitions are held during this time.
    6. *Food:* Traditional Bengali cuisine is an integral part of the celebrations. Food stalls offer a wide range of sweets, snacks, and traditional dishes to the visitors.
    7. *Sindoor Khela:* On the last day of Durga Puja, married Bengali women participate in Sindoor Khela, where they apply vermilion to each other and to the idols of the goddess as a mark of their marital status.
    8. *Immersion:* On the last day (Vijaya Dashami), the idols are immersed in rivers or other bodies of water, symbolizing the departure of the goddess and her family back to their heavenly abode.
