The movie announced on Facebook before every new episode. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
The intro was steamy! Also, my favorite funny masks scene is in Hot Fuzz where the main character doesn’t know which forensics expert at a crime scene is his wife (edit:girlfriend) because they all have masks.
Although Cate Blanchett's eyes are a dead giveaway it's her.

there was an outer limits episode i could swear this happened in. the one where everyone is staying at a ski resort but in reality they are frozen to later heal some sort of malady. the dominate personality of the bunch rules with an iron fist. i could find it, but i'm lazy

Terry Gilliam is experiencing what I like to call the "Burton effect." What was once a truly unique perspective has devolved into self parody. Shyamalan also Burtons pretty hard. Maybe there's another name for it?
At least Gilliam isn't making bland Disney films like Burton, he has always maintained his "outsider" status.
Yeah, I can tolerate Gilliam more as at least he's still trying to explore ideas. Tim Burton movies are just complete whimsy.
In regards to movies like House of a Thousand Corpses, I believe that Matt himself said it best.
Every movie is riffable, and every movie is worthy of serious discussion.
You almost said it yourselves. The Villain in 'Brasil' is Order, and the Villain in 12 Monkeys is Chaos. This movie seems to be an attempt to unite those concepts.

This definitely has Terry Gilliam written all over it. It also reminds me a little bit of Luc Besson, and I get Pink Floyd vibes from it. I also noticed when Qohen met Bainsley for the first time, I noticed she was mocking smoking. Is that a stylistic choice of some sort? I just noticed because I quit smoking three weeks ago and I see it everywhere.

I don't know why but Craig's face thing being more fogged than Matt's somehow makes sense to me and makes me happy as well.
This is one of those movies where all I can say about it is, "Well that exists".
Joe Versus The Volcano is a great double feature with Brazil. I know it's got it's problems, but it has some cool elements.
I'm truly shocked at the consensus on this film; I absolutely loved it from beginning to end.
I love Terry Gilliam movies, but Zero Theorem is just an extremely expensive Neil Breen production.
Setting this to watch later after work. From the hazmat masks alone, I can tell this will be amazing

Welp, even before the wrap up I could tell I had aged out of this movie. I think I was blinded by my relation to this man that has a black hole in him, something I found within myself while watching the movie at the time of 2013. Either way I'm definitely going to give it a rewatch! It's such a joy to find new perspectives as I age, thanks guys!

Huge Terry Gilliam fan here. One of my all-time favourite films is The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Also love The Fisher King and Twelve Monkeys. But, my prevailing though after watching The Zero Theorem was; "Well, that was a load of old nonsense".

The movie that you're trying to think of where the snow comes in through the roof of the house is Crimson Peak. One of my favorite Guillermo Del Toro films.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is such an entertaining film.
It’s not just that It’s entertaining, but it pays homage to the book really well…
I wish that you had talked more about 12 Monkeys. It is one of my favorite movies, and while it has appeared in Seen It, it was early on where not much was said in terms of opinions. You talked about it's connection to La Jetée, which is an interesting story, but that's all you really discussed.
Peter Stormare, David Thewlis? Sounds like a spin-off of The Big Lebowski
Seen it? The Zero Effect. A good movie, fairly funny, with some thought in the plot and themes.
I thought Gillam's trilogy was "The Time Bandits", "Brazil", and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". Time Bandits explores the idea of life from the perspective of a child, Brazil does it from the perspective of a 25-30 year old, and Baron from the perspective of 40+ year old. I could be wrong but I remember reading that somewhere
Great episode! The masks didn't take away anything, in fact I prefer the masks to the laptop.
It was a very frustrating film and Terry Gilliam can be a frustrating director but I will say this for him; the fact that he was able to create that crazy world with less than half of the original budget is testament to him as someone with some (though not always consistent) artistic vision.
Not familiar with this movie, but it gave me Spy Kids vibes visually speaking. glad you're still filming together. great episode, guys
Seen it? Sorcerer. I recently watched The Wages of Fear and have just learned of Sorcerer. With The Wages of Fear becoming one of my new favorites I can't wait to see it and want to know what you think. Also seen it? The Woman in the Dunes??? Also a new favorite.

I feel like Matt might have the wrong idea about House of 1000 Corpses. The Devil’s Rejects is the one that’s a major downer. 1000 Corpses is more fun.

Between that Gilliam laugh and the fact that he somehow edited Craig into every shot on the couch, I think he might be having his own Zero Theorem moment. Stay strong buddy.
It's only another N months before quarantine is over.
I am going to become the devil's advocate here . . . I actually really enjoyed The Zero Theorem . . . Especially because I felt a connection with Q . . . I admit it's not nearly as good as "Brazil" or "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" . . . but I still found a personal connection with the movie . . . a weird part of me just got what the movie was saying . . .

I thought the same about Little Women. Every scene felt like the characters were dancing. It was a joy to watch.
To be honest Gilliam's career peaked at Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as for me that film is sublime... But after his recent interviews he is just not a nice human sadly! Though I take a little umbrage at you dismissing House of a 1000 Corpses as it certainly isn't rapey and is more EC comics than his later stuff! :) Though I'll say thank you for the fine work you gents do and thank you to my friend Aida who recommended the show and I've loved every single episode! :)
I forgot Fear and Loathing. That one was the last I saw. And you're right. That movie shows that Gilliam could weave his style with an equally inventive stylist (Thompson and the illustrator Steadman)
I consider myself to be a Gilliam fanboy, but I agree TZT is unsatisfying but I can't quite put my finger on why. Perhaps he was too engrossed in the Don Quixote project... by the way The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is WELL worth your time to watch. It's a return to form.

I had this movie in my queue, so when you announced that you were watching it I moved it to the front and watched it.
I really like the visuals and the production design in this movie (as in most others of Gilliam's movies), but the script has some issues.
This is an excerpt from my review:
"The story/idea is ok, but it feels like it just drags on sometimes and it doesn't seem to get anywhere. The ending is very Gilliam-esc, but it just feels very "Meh".
While the script wasn't written by Gilliam, but by Pat Rushin (with only one prior writing credit), it seems like it has taken a lot of inspiration from Gilliam's previous movies (as well as some others in the genre)."
I am a fan of Gilliam, and several of his movies are in my top 20, but this movie isn't even in my top 200..

with just whats shown here, i can see why the southpark puppet movie has an insult of "matt damon"! you guys care to share thoughts on individual actors/actresses? like a super magnifying glass. i love u guys. as long as you dont beat up on the long dead and burried. keep it relevant.
Zero Theorem seems like nonsense until you realize that it's all metaphorical. Thoroughly metaphorical. It's been a long time since I saw it, but it's one of the hardest analysis I've come across, partly because of references to Christianity (Christianity is an incredibly confused, inconsistent religion), and partly because of switching/inconsistent and overlapping metaphors: Matt Damon's character seems to be playing both an extremely rational character as well as Satan (These are not compatible characters) and possibly also God (That pairing is a lot closer), and the woman is also playing Satan while she also represents a rational, humanistic hedonism in the face of the cold hard truth of a mindless, mathematical universe that does not care about humanity because it isn't alive (This actually IS a decent pairing if you ever talk to any actual Satanists). The phone ringing is a metaphor for "his calling". He keeps waiting for something that will give his life some grand cosmic meaning, but Matt Damon's character points out that there IS no cosmic meaning due to the secular nature of the universe and because we're all going to die (soon!). The main character's name vs the name his boss "mistakenly" calls him repeatedly is significant. Google the meaning and history of the two names. It's a reference to his duality. Zero Theorem is a must if you like hidden narratives or just like fun props and concepts.

Tideland is really good. The The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was OK, but this one is like some boring sex fantasy of an old guy wishing young women would lust over him.

I agree completely. I watched this movie last year, I feel like Gilliam is like Cronenberg, a lot of very interesting images but the story never makes sense. They should do movies like Baraka, just a collection of interesting images. Don't try and force a story on them.
Trivia question: Why did Sam Wainright et al say "Hee Haw" in It's a Wonderful Life?
Too cerebral for you guys it seems. Didn't notice the camera-crucifix? It was even repeated for those who ignored it TWICE! Hmph. Ah, well. Every scene was a statement. You missed ALL of them? ALL of them?! Ugh. Literally Terry's best work by far. Disappointing review.
