Thanks for the helpful information and easy to follow along video. I had concerns dropping off my iMac to a computer repair shop wasn't sure if I had to do a factory reset before leaving my computer for repairs.

I sent my late 2013 MacBook Pro for repair with flickering screen issues. Graphics card I thought.
Then I was told this MacBook doesn't have graphics card but Intel. Correct, cause I cIecked. I told the guy that according to the System Report which I printed out before sending it to him, has NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDRS memory and automatic graphics switching.
He told me that is not true.
Serious? Apple listed items that are not in the MacBook? Any ideas?

The 2013 MacBook Pro came with either the intel or the Nvidia cards in them. They should be able to look it up by the serial number, but if it's not listing because the unit is considered obsolete (it's over 7 years), show them a screenshot from your System Profiler. Hope this helps.

I'm old and very intimidated by doing the Time Machine/hard drive backup myself. I'm getting the impression that mac shops won't do that for you prior to a (bank required - yeah, you get it) reset. Is that the case? I use a local repair shop, not Apple repair. No faimly or friends to help with this one. I'm afraid I'll screw it up and lose all my stuff - I seem to do that sort of thing of late. Hope you see this!

The folks at the Apple Store will help you backup your data before they take it if you ask them. Make an appointment with the genius bar. Or if there is a local Apple Authorized Service Provider you like, take it there - I'm sure they will be accommodating. Make sure you bring it to an Apple authorized place, not any repair shop. Apple-Authorized Service Providers used parts directly from Apple.

Please make sure you mention that 3rd party apps like Carbon Copy Cloner is not compatible with Apple Silicon Macs. That tools is useful only for Intel Macs, as the boot process for the Apple Silicon is very much different.

Hi Maynne - Not sure where you are seeing that - but Carbon Copy Cloner is 100% compatible with Apple Silicon, as of CCC 5.1.23+. Here is their blog article on it for more reading: bombich.com/blog/2020/11/03/yes-you-can-have-bootable-backups-on-macos-big-sur. Hope this helps clarify things :)
