재일 한국계 민족학교인 교토국제고가 '여름 고시엔'으로 불리는 일본 전국고교야구선수권대회에서 처음으로 우승하며 기적의 역사를 썼습니다.
선수들이 승리 직후 "동해 바다 건너서~"로 시작하는 한국어 교가를 부르는 모습이 공영방송 NHK를 통해 일본 전역에 생중계됐는데요.

현지시간 23일, 일본 전국고교야구선수권대회 결승전이 열린 효고현의 한신고시엔구장.
교토국제고가 연장 접전 끝에 극적으로 승리를 확정하자 응원 나온 학생들은 서로를 얼싸안고 환호성을 울립니다.
[현장음] "우와! 우와!"
이어서 관례에 따라 교토국제고의 한국어 교가가 경기장에 울려 퍼집니다.

선수들과 응원 나온 학생들이 함께 한국어 교가를 부르는 모습은 공영방송 NHK를 통해 일본 전국에 생중계됐습니다.
고시엔은 일본 고교 야구선수들에게 '꿈의 무대'로 불립니다.
올해도 일본 전역에서 3천440여 개 팀이 참가했지만, 49개 학교만 본선에 올랐습니다.
그래서 1999년 야구부를 창단한 교토국제고가 이 바늘구멍을 뚫고 정상에까지 오른 건 기적이란 평가가 나오고 있습니다.
[백승환 / 교토국제고 교장] "106회 일본 전국 고교야구대회에서 우승할 수 있도록 성원해주신 고국의 팬들에게 감사의 말씀을 드립니다. 일본에 계신 동포분들께 감동을 드릴 수 있어서 정말 기쁘게 생각합니다."
교토국제고는 중 고교생을 모두 합해 학생 수가 160명가량인 소규모 한국계 학교입니다.
재일교포들이 민족 교육을 위해 자발적으로 돈을 모아 1947년 설립한 교토조선중학교가 전신입니다.
현재는 재적 학생의 65%가 일본인, 한국계가 30%가량을 차지하고 있습니다.
박철희 주일 한국대사는 "한일 협력을 상징하는 교토국제학원은 이번 대회 우승으로 한일 양국 국민에게 가슴 깊이 간직될 빛나는 감동을 선물했다"며 축하 메시지를 건넸습니다.

This school was originally a Korean school, but is now an international school, and over 70% of the students are Japanese with no Korean roots. Only one player in this starting lineup has Korean roots. Korean media should report the details, it is Koreans who will be embarrassed later. 90 out of 130 students at the school are Japanese with no Korean roots.

In the past, the majority of the baseball team were Korean nationals. The cafeteria in the baseball team dormitory always had all-you-can-eat kimchi. However, now, there is only one player on the bench with Korean nationality, left fielder Yugo Kanemoto. By the way, he says that he only found out about his roots after entering high school. Kanemoto speaks candidly.
「I don't understand much Korean, so I thought maybe I was half Korean. Then I found out I was Korean. I was like, "Oh, I see. but I came here to play baseball."」
Kyoto International has a total of 138 students. Of those, 61 are baseball team members, most of whom are Japanese.

"You know, sometimes there are players with Korean nationality, right? It's the same at our school. We recruit players regardless of nationality, and when there are, we have them. Our chairman of the board and principal are Korean nationals, but they don't tell us to recruit players with Korean nationality. They know that it was us, Japanese people, who rebuilt the school when it was on the verge of collapse, so they let us do what we want. If you look at it, I don't think there is any other school that values its baseball team so much. School events wouldn't be as exciting without the baseball team, so they adjust their schedules to fit the baseball team. That's why when we're recruiting players, we always say, "Leave it to us, not the school."
There is another school inside the school that specializes in baseball. That is the image Iwabuchi has. His greatest wish is to change the school song.
"When I walk around recruiting sites, I'm often told to 'Why not change it for the new guys?.' If we do that, more players will come, I think. In fact, when we made our first appearance at Koshien in the 2021 selection tournament, we were one step away from changing it. We thought that if we just wrote a new song and created a fait accompli, everything would be fine. But it didn't work out. There are a lot of things to consider."

They are even trying to change their school song to increase the number of club members.
A local reporter closely followed Kyoto International High School. The players could sing it, but it seemed they didn't have a deep understanding of its meaning. Some even said, "I can't sing it..."
The school trip is to Korea. The morning assembly is also in Korean, and the players have no idea what the teachers are saying.
I looked up Kyoto International on the internet. The school was founded in 1947 as an ethnic school for Koreans living in Japan. However, it later fell into financial difficulties and changed its name to its current one in 2004, at which point it began accepting Japanese students as well. The baseball club was founded in 1999, and at the time, most of the students were Korean. Currently, the school has a total of 138 students, of which about 80% are Japanese with no Korean roots. There are 61 members on the baseball club, about half of the total student body, and most of them are Japanese with no Korean roots.

baseball club member Iwabuchi said he had no emotional attachment to the school song. Coach Noritsugu Komaki (41) agreed.
"I'm not interested in it at all either. I've been at this school for over ten years, but I still don't know what it says. I don't intend to memorize it. Even if I tell the school, nothing will happen, nothing will change, and they'll just ignore me. I think you should ask the school about that. Hahahaha."
question--But would it sound different if we were to win?
"No, I might be basking in the afterglow of winning, but I don't have any emotional attachment to the school song and I don't care. Hahahahaha."
