Enter the Adventure - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, today in our second reading, St. Paul says, “None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.” In many ways, the whole Bible, the whole of revelation, is summed up in this statement. Yet everything in our culture militates against this: it’s all about your life, your choice, finding your voice, asserting your prerogatives. When we live in this little world, we remain stuck in a kind of permanent adolescence; when we live for the Lord, we enter into the adventure of being truly human.

Jesus answered, “Not seven, I tell you, but seventy-seven times.”

You described so succinctly the very essence of modern culture and the rise of narcissists, who are children in adult bodies, who are so self-absorbed and egocentric, there is no place for God in their lives. This is becoming more prevalent and this is our challenge as believers in God and in His son Jesus, Our role as parents and teachers to the next generation, is to ensure our children grow to become adults who are empathetic, kind and humble in their knowledge of God as Our King and the sacrifice made by his Son, Our Lord Jesus for us.

You saved the day again! Thank you, thank you for your gift of your life. Your words today made me smile and reminded me of an uncle of mine who had this saying, “you can swim around that guy’s world in a melon skin!” My Dad was raised with 12 boys and 2 girls in a, then remote, area of north central Saskatchewan in Canada. My Grandpa brought his large family to a place where not one tree was cut and no roads. - the tale is too long to tell here but needless to say, this family did not think you were handed anything for nothing and slogged life out together. I’m sure my Grandma was and is a saint; her rosary always at the front of her life and many hardships including feeding the many “strays” Grandpa would bring home to feed and help who had wandered into a hard land they had no idea how to survive in. Anyway the “faith” prevailed, sometimes you never saw a priest for a few months. Grandma was also a staunch supporter of the priesthood, sending a few cents or a dollar or two whenever she could to support them in seminary. Every single day, the family lived out the initiation steps you talked about, it was clearly spelled out through everyday living and there were was so much joy and fun mixed in with all the work and trials. We knew God - and how to find Him when we were lost. We knew the way home. JMJ please keep your great servant, Bishop Barron safe and strong. Amen.

. Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. If followers of Christ truly lived as prescribed in Romans 14: 7-8, Christianity wouldn't be laughed at the way it is today. Instead what the world sees are wanton followers of the Gospel of Prosperity. And so they scoff at our prayers for Mercedes Benzes, mansions, sprawling estates, bulging bank accounts and the so-called good life. We are not the Light of the World, as prescribed in Matthew 5:14. Thanks for the great reminder of who we are.

Thank you, once again, Bishop Barron for your sermon. Lately, they have been challenging me to stand strong in our Catholic beliefs, even when I expect opposition. If I may say something a little about safe spaces - to my understanding, the motivation behind the opening up of these spaces is to give people whose narratives/voices/worldviews aren’t normally heard (whether that’s because the majority are usually the ones whose voices/stories are most vocalized/hearkened to, or because these people have lost their courage to express their views due to lack of support or resources, etc.) a chance to have their say. These spaces may seem bubble-wrapped and not in accordance with the harshness of reality, but I believe that’s the point. By creating these spaces, the hope is that they can help people gain courage in expressing their stories, as well as encourage others to actually listen to views that may be foreign to them instead of shutting them down.

    Brothers and sisters:
None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself.
For if we live, we live for the Lord,
    and if we die, we die for the Lord;
so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord's.
For this is why Christ died and came to life,
that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

    1 Bishop Barron,
I liked when you gave the illustration about; the tooth knocked out; and then sent to the elements of nature; where there is no mercy; like a tough love. I am a new convert and I had to jump hurtles; of the things you just said. God always sent someone to clarify things. I wrote on this with the other channel; I write a lot there. I get a tear or two now. You made it understood; answering my question: why on earth would the Communists infiltrate the seminaries; as Fulton Sheen prophesied; by watching how Communism; brought in debauchery; and twisted reasoning...
2Like no police; and then: they came in full force. Then, the hypocrites; brought back morality; without Jesus Christ; because: they want to mock us; and say: Oh, you are Christians; and a Christian nation; and you are - way beneath your God given privilege; to evolve to adoption in Christ. BUT YOU ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL; YOU ARE NOT THE CREAM OF THE CROP; AN UNDERSTATEMENT.
3False Claim; Communism: WE ARE THE CREAM OF THE CROP; WITHOUT CHRIST; WE LIVE; EVOLVED HUMANS; BUT WITHOUT CHRIST. Like you said: - nothing is new under the sun. There has always been a battle between righteousness and darkness; even within your own ranks; like heaven also had a war. The Patriarch Job: the devil enters heaven; and is allowed to enter heaven; to accuse.
4I've written on how; a Caribbean minister; who specializes in Bible scriptures dealing with the order of the hierarchy of the unseen world whether; it be Heaven's angels vs the Fallen angels; always scripture based; knowledge knocks out questions and gets you on the Light path. I needed him; to get those scriptures and used them for the Catholic path of a new convert; and I jumped that hurtle of the thing that was sparring; like a boxer with his trainer; sparring. So, in real life; the seen world; there is a hierarchy; and if you are in the Church; you have to stay within this understanding; hierarchy of how the spiritual laws work.
5Geometry: We are like angles; - and angels for that post. We cannot get mad; and abandon ship. You said: the tribal training euphemism: it is to make you; evolve past the "Communism." We get punched in the mouth; by the sparring partner; really sparring hard. God is our sparring partner; he created the devil; so that is definitely sparring. At first: it is confusing that God created the devil; that is a sparring fact. But, God always sends someone to correct the spar; to become the spark; to Light the next candle; who are glued to their angle; like a hierarchy on earth.

Dear Bishop Barron, Is it not funny that to be Catholic is counter-culture? And yet so many that do not know, accuse the Church of being "traditional", stuck in it's old ways, unwilling to get in step with the times? The one thing I would add to these wonderful words shared by Paul and your exposition, is that once we understand we don't live for ourselves, how liberating it is! Once I understood that Our Lord loves us no matter what we do, I felt a tremendous burden lift from my heart. And as you pointed out as a child, how everything is taken care for us, the sacred milieu created by God, it's absolutely wonderful how liberating it can be for each of us. Thanks for all you do and I pray that Our Mother keeps you under the mantle of protection, always!

I really wanted and prayed that someone teaches this message valiantly to our children, especially the young adults and even adults. Thanks to social media, we are able to listen to this great teaching.
We are in deep need of the right education to bring us out of permanent adolescence. May God bless the world of today to get to the right space with proper change in thinking and understanding and acceptance of our belongingness to Christ, our Saviour. May metanoia preached and expected by Jesus for our own good get the souls back to God in this century too.

Loved this! It’s been puzzling to me in recent years to hear members of the church primarily mourning the martyrdom of brothers and sisters in Christ, and I think this homily highlights why: are they victims of cruel murder? Yes. Lord, have mercy. But are they to be seen as victims? Not by the Church. The once-beheaded St. Paul and the rest of the “cloud of witnesses” welcomes martyrs as “MORE THAN CONQUERERS”. Mourn the dead, of course. But go beyond that to the reality that they “won the prize” “which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, will award…”
They were already dead by being baptized into Christ. The martyrs are in a sense more alive than we are.

I've been blessed with a long life and had time to think about my life and how much I wasted in doing so much wrong. Self inspection is good and can be bad for the individual, and in my case, it hurts to have wasted so much God gave me. I enjoy your sermons.

This insightful homily reminds me of something Pope Benedict XIV said: "You were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness." We could stay in our own childish ways. But when we move beyond it and join ourselves to God's mission in life, we find the fullness of life in living according to His purpose for us. It's tough to consider the ideas in this homily, but when we consider where it leads us, it's a great motivator.

...And also important to not just note, but to know and believe with all our Heart...we have been purchased, true,,but NOT TO BE ENSLAVED By The Purchaser...rather, TO BE SET FREE...from the bondage of slavery to sin, aka the evil one...Yes...as The Rev. Bishop Barron reminded us in One Of His Eloquent Discourses, To Be Ourselves...NOT in competition with The Omnipotent GOD, but, (dare-say) enjoy Togetherness With 'N In The Omnopotence❣

Every Sunday I listen to your sermon, I say to myself: "This is the best sermon you have given." Comes next Sunday, I think the same. Small humor here. Recently, my wife and I moved from Chicago southwest area to rural Plains. Originally, the area of our new home was settled by German-Cathollic immigrants. It remains overwhelming Catholic today. In asking myself how I could explain Bishop Barron's, Words on Fire, to my neighbor farmer down the gravel road, who is deeply religious in his Catholicism, I pictured myself saying how Bishop Barron is down to earth. He grew up in Chicago where I lived for 55 years. He played and followed baseball like many regular Joes from Chicago. He has debated atheists who have hit hard, shedding any silent reverence for his office of Bishop. Ok, nice. But this down-to-earth humanity molds a message all the more accessible, imo. I once shook hands with Joseph Campbell and asked a brief question after listening to him speak. Campbell's "Hero with a Thousand Faces" was not about Hollywood glitter, but about the very thing you sermonized today. You remind me of the need to live beyond yourself, regardless of the size of your contribution. In the mother house of Great Bend, town near us in Kansas, we met Sister Terry, a Dominican Nun. She exuded love, sacrifice and... courage. She had been a Religious midwife for 23 years in Northern Nigeria until Boko Haram obliged her order to call her back to the states. She illustrated to me the life lived as Bishop Barron proclaims. Thank you, Bishop, as always. Be well, blessings.
