  • Lotus is an Appalachian Trail, Arizona Trail, and Florida Trail thru hiker. She was last working as a Park Ranger in Olympic National Park. And since there were so many requests for her gear list after some of my last videos we decided to take a look!
    LOTUS GEAR LIST: lotushikes.com/gear-list ... or ... lighterpack.com/r/meh19z
    @lotushikes on intagram
    Hiking Essentials Shirt! jupiterhikes.com/product/hikin...
    Maybe this video will be helpful to other women, or provide some insight! Going over gear like how she felt about the Pa'lante packs v2, if a Kula Cloth pee rag is any better than just a bandana, how her Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt has lasted since the appalachian trail three years ago, Bras, Underwear, baselayers, sleep socks, and torso length foam sleeping pads from a womans perspective! Something I could never otherwise offer.
    After completing the Florida National Scenic Trail together, we made our way back home where Lotus lives in Arizona. Mostly have been home, running around the suburbs of Phoenix, but dreaming of going back to places like Picketpost Mountain, Weavers Needle, and this particular video was filmed on a long day hike in Black Rock Canyon. It was great to get out, and I hope you enjoy.

      What is the weight of her tent, the one?

    • @jessiporch7715
      @jessiporch7715 4 роки тому +3

      @@nedsled2994 19.93 oz / 565 g, per Gossamer Gear's website. It also needs 6 stakes so another ~50-70 grams depending on which stakes you bring.

      The backpack doesn't seem comfortable for longer hikes as it sdoeant have stiff back... I would probably add a bit of weight so it's more comfortable and you won't actually feel the difference

    Thanks for sharing what worked for you. I just got a pair of Topo Ultraventures last week and they are already my favorite pair of shoes ever. Wide toebox like an Altra, but more comfortable for me due o the slight drop and cushioning. I plan to get another pair so I have a clean pair to wear off trail.

    The Ultraventures are great, especially since Topo started using Vibram outsoles. More tapered midfoot than Altra, plus a little drop while retaining the wider toe box. The Terraventure 2's are nice for off trail terrain. Looks like the GG Nighlight fits better in the newer Pa'lante's. Thanks for the video, y'all.

    Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, but the headlamp shown at 6:54 is actually the Nitecore NU25, I have the exact same thing. This is easily one of the best lightweight headlamps available, definitely worth checking out. Fully submersible, USB rechargable, night hikable (think wintertime), excellent broadspread true white light setting for reading. Really full featured for just the 52 grams (1.8 oz) weight including the standard headband, or even lighter if you tinker your own attachment system with a shock cord or a clip on. (And no, I am not taking money from Nitecore.)

    Hi Lotus! Loved your vid....I too have the BSR stove, Montbell Versalite rain jacket and Montbell baselayer shirt! I also LOVE merino. Got a question for you....what do you sit on during breaks? Looks like your pad stays in your bag all the time, so clean! And you don't use any kind of air pad? So light, so jelly... I tried the Palante but couldn't get it to work with a z-lite pad and would never get it to work with a bear can. Hoping to get out to the Sierra for some cross country stuff or just ANYWHERE really. Did get 500+/- done on the Hayduke before all the NPs closed. Hope u r hangin in there and get to do eat PCT miles soon. ~Sunkist~

    • @tessmullaney
      @tessmullaney 2 роки тому

      Sunkist! Love following your adventures. On breaks I either sit on my pack, a rock, or the ground. Sit pads are nice, but I didn't really miss it when it was gone. The air pads kept popping on me and I was much happier when I didn't have to deal with that!

    What about a shelter...?!
    I love learning more about ultralight and I try to buy as mostly light as I can (850 down Big Agnes sleeping bag to save weight) but can’t fathom how someone travels without something as simple as an ace bandage for a sprained ankle or at least an extra pen. Or nail clippers! I guess it all depends on the location of the trail, duration of the trip and re-supply points. I wish I could drop the weight of a bear canister in some areas but I get it.
    Very cool ideas, nonetheless and I enjoyed seeing a female perspective. Maybe I’ll do a backpacking load out gear video. We need more!

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  4 роки тому +1

      Hey! Forgot to mention the shelter in the vid, but she uses a gossamergear the one when alone, and we shared a zpacks duplex when hiking together. As for the other stuff, generally on most of these long trails we aren't too far from a town so nail clippers for instance are on a buy as we need basis. Same goes for medical stuff, Advil is often enough to get to town, from there we can get more serious help, supplies, or an out back home. Some things like an ace bandage could probably be improvised with a shirt, bandana, or something of the like. Having broken a foot on trail in 2018, and sprained an ankle in 2012 I still don't find the need to carry one myself but would never fault anyone for wanting to have that safety net to aid in getting to the next town. Cheers! I'm glad you enjoyed the video

    How do you feel about the GG night light in colder temps? What would you confidently push it to? And, did you find you need to remove everything In the pack to get to it? (I find my thin light super sticky so it stays on the outside. - good for not sliding around in a tent though).

    Have you thought about using a camping bidet? They weigh ~.5 oz and work surprisingly well.

      I tried one out and it ended up making me feel dirtier somehow. Also didn't enjoy having to carry a dedicated bidet bottle.

    As a male hiker, I found this video to be well done too.

    Hello Jupiter! May I ask what size is the Hiking Essential shirt that Lotus is wearing on this video. I wanted to order one for me but i’m torn between a medium or large. Thanks!

    found the gossamer packs incredibly uncomfortable no matter how it was packed; until i slipped a thin, flexible pvc cuttingboard (ca. 8x12") inside the pack facing the back… this increases the weight only by about 1,5 oz but increases the comfort tremendously. Thoughts anyone?
