I managed to watch the announcement hours later without spoiling it and my reaction was very similar to yours. I was the only person in the room and I was yelling “they have TWO winners!!” Lol. I went straight here to get your reaction. How refreshing to see someone get that excited. You called it. I haven’t even read either one. 😂
Greg! I knew your reaction would be epic and you didn't disappoint. Thank you for being so authentic and real in your excitement and love for this prize, AND for Demon Copperhead. This was great fun to watch. 😊💜
Greg, I really enjoyed your reaction and excitement Pulitzer Prize 2023 winner. It really lifted my spirits and made me smile. ‘Demon Copperhead” by Barbara Kingsolver was one of my favorite reads and really happy she won. “The Poisonwood Bible” was another one of her books I loved and has stayed with me over the years. I have “Trust” by Hernan Diaz on my TBR pile and I am hoping to read it in the next few months. Daniel Black’s book “Don’t Cry for Me” was an awesome book and I was able to see a couple of interviews about this book. Both interviews were great. I was impressed with Leila Mottley’s book “Nightcrawling. This young lady does have very promising career ahead. Thank you again for a great video and your excitement and enthusiasm of books it is contagious. Hope you have a great day and keep on doing what you do.
I’ve been saving your response till tonight, because when I saw the winners I knew how you’d react, and you didn’t disappoint! I love your excitement so much, watching was truly the highlight of my day. ❤
This was such a joyous video to watch. I had to watch the announcement live to share in your excitement and I freaked out too, but mostly because i knew how much you would be freaking out 😄
This video made my day. Your excitement is catching and made me both happy and excited. Love that the love for books and this prize can evoke so much emotion, and I really appreciate that you made this video (and edited) the way you did.
Hello from Switzerland Greg! I am lucky enough to be able to read, and review if worthwhile, English language books for a lovely old library here before they add them to their collection and I felt exactly the same as you did. I read Trust because of the hype that seemed to point to its win but also only enjoyed part 3 and the wife’s revelation. And I just fell in love with Demon Copperhead. It was Kingsolver’s time and this book and her handling of all the systemic failings in American society will surely have more impact after this prize. But that BOTH of them would win? I would never have imagined that possibility either!!! As one booklover to another, your joyful enthusiasm is so contagious. Thank you.
Thank you so much! That really means a lot. I'm glad you agreed on these two books. I've been to Switzerland and it's a lovely country. I have several books on my shelves that I purchased from there as a souvenir!
I couldn't wait to see your reaction. I was at work watching the announcement, and I'm sure I audibly gasped when they said there were two winners. I'm so glad I took the time to watch the live stream!
You called it! I hope Barbara sees this video so she can see how happy her fans about her big win. I also hope you will get to Stay True - that was one of my favorite books of 2022.
I'm so surprised Stay True dropped off my radar until now. I'll have to try to get to it. I would love it if Barbara Kingsolver saw my video and I would love it even more if it put a smile on her face. 😊
This feels the absolute best possible outcome for you! The one your heart wanted to win and the one your brain predicted would win. Well played Greg, you smashed it this year! I know you said you weren’t keen on trust, but I really liked it and I’m half way through demon, and let’s just say this book would need to go drastically off the rails to not end up as one of my best reads of the year. So I’m really happy with the both winners!
The funny thing about Trust is that I actually REALLY liked the third section of the book. I had almost stopped reading it because I was bored by the first two sections, so I'm glad I stuck with it. Even though I only liked half of the book, I think Diaz is a great writer and I'm eager to read more of his work. And I'm so glad you are liking Demon Copperhead! I hope that continues as you finish.
I thought of you during the announcement today, and the way you pivoted between the two books in your earlier video. You nailed it! Congrats! And I agree with you about Night of the Living Rez.
Your reaction brings me so much joy! I too watched live and freaked out about there being two winners and was rooting for DC so hard! Hooray!!! DC may still be on the Booker and Trust was only longlisted not shortlisted. To me, DC is really the better book.
I agree that Demon Copperhead is superior, but I'm okay with the way things turned out. It will be interesting to see if Kingsolver makes the Booker list after all this!
This is my favorite announcement video I've seen. 😂Your excitement is absolutely contagious and I am thrilled that both Trust and Demon Copperhead won.
Woohoo!!! Impressive prediction, you nailed it!!The book awards bookies are going to be following more closely in the future and hanging on your every choice! A much needed win on your behalf.
I couldn't wait to see your reaction video after watching the announcement this afternoon. You definitely called it! I share your joy that Demon Copperhead won. Thanks for a great reaction video.
I am very happy with the results! Trust and Demon Copperhead were tied for my second favorite book of 2022 and were two of my three guesses for the Pulitzer. I absolutely love both of them. I was in my backyard listening to the announcement and I am certain one of my neighbors was treated to my voluble, enthusiastic reaction to the winners. It’s great to see someone else react in the same vein!
My 2022 favorite book of the year was Elizabeth Finch by Julian Barnes. Aside from possibly Mr. Barnes himself, I am pretty sure I am the sole person to name it their top book of 2022. 😂 But you know how there are certain writers who seem to speak to your soul and to great, elusive truths? That’s Julian Barnes for me.
This is my all-time favorite of your videos! I think I may be happier for you than for the winners. 😂 I used your video to learn the winners, and I’m so glad I did! Your genuine enthusiasm and exuberance made this year’s announcement pure joy. Can’t wait for your deep dives!
you knocked it out of the park this year! Following your predictions has been a blast. Your commentary was so well thought out and entertaining. Congrats Greg!
I was so excited for you when I saw the results and I got so much joy watching your joy at the announcement! There were so many books on my TBR that were finalists and winners across categories! Queueing Demon Copperhead up next!
It’s hard because I’ve been following the Pulitzer for more than twenty years. You’ll get there! Getting people involved in prediction videos and reactions is a good system, I think.
You did fantastic!!! How incredible! I shall now call you “The Oracle” 😂 I was freaking out too, TWO winners!! Just finished Demon Copperhead yesterday morning so it was perfect timing for me. ❤
I didn't really pay attention to critique awards prior to today. But the critique winner's description you mentioned sounded interesting so I started reading it! And I found it very insightful! Would be interested in hearing about critique essays you reccomend!
So glad Demon Copperhead won which, if you remember from my comment on your prediction video, this was my prediction to win. Interesting that they have picked two winners for the first time in the prize’s history. I also think the book has a very good shot at winning the Women’s Prize and the Booker Prize as well. Loved your reaction! 😎
Thank you! What a wild (and satisfying) turn of events. It will be very interesting to see what happens with both the Women's Prize and the Booker after this.
I know this is a new comment on an old video but I’m late to the party. I love literary fiction. Was so happy to find your channel that aligned with my book taste. The first book I ordered and read was Demon Copperhead from your recommendations. I absolutely LOVED it! And at last night’s book club my name was drawn to pick-and yes I chose DC! I cannot wait to hear their reactions and discuss this with the group!! Also, your interest in the prizes has intrigued me to look into to all these. I will be here next year to watch your reaction on announcement day. Not sure you can top this video, but we will see. Lol Thank you!!!
I'm so glad you loved Demon Copperhead, and that you are bringing it to more people. I definitely don't think I can top this reaction video ever, but we'll see!
The way I screamed over the tie! 😱Truly wild and unprecedented in the Fiction category, though it's happened so much in the journalism categories over the years. I never would have considered it in Fiction (or Drama, for that matter). Still trying to process! Gut reaction is that I'm elated for Trust, an exceptional novel and what felt the most "right" to me as the predicted winner. Ties in general usually have such a copout feel to them, like just pick one already! It's not difficult. But Kingsolver was seen as being far more overdue that Diaz, so I guess this is the best of both worlds. No one in my real life cares about book prizes or awards in general, so finding this level of excitement online is the best!
I think the tie is a legacy from when they didn't name a winner in 2012. I believe the rules say that if they don't agree, they won't award a prize--but after the anger they caused in 2012, I don't think they wanted to do that again. And I'm glad they didn't!
So thrilled for you. I'm so far behind on American literature and prizes, as I've been reading the women's prize and the international booker. Kingsolver is one of the few I haven't read of the women's prize books. I also feel bad for Vauhini Vara for the tie in a three book race.
It’s definitely hard to be the odd one out in this scenario. Hopefully, more people will discover their book. It’s easy to fall behind with all these prizes at once!
Wow! Has there been any other year in the past few decades where it felt like a battle between 2 critical heavyweights? Feels like these were two very high-profile books and they elected to award both. There were 3 books that appeared on both the New York Times and Washington Post "10 best of 2022." Trust, Demon Copperhead, and the fantastic memoir "Stay True" by Hua Hsu which ALSO just won the Pulitzer for memoir/autobiography.
I need to get around to Stay True. I don't think there's been such a heated race between two books since 2011, when Freedom and A Visit From the Goon Squad took all the best-of-the-year prizes. In that case, only one made the finalists and it probably allowed Goon Squad to claim the title.
I think this might help quell the notion that the fiction jury pads the field so the preferred frontrunner can win the prize from the board. They could have left off Trust or Demon Copperhead if they really wanted to, but instead, both made the cut! And both won lol.
So happy for Barbara Kingsolver.🎉 Demon Copperhead is my favourite book of this year so far, such an amazing feat of writing. I will definitely need to read Trust.
I love it when people are so excited by books. I reacted similarly and immediately called my mom. Trust really hit me at the perfect time this year. I read it right when it came out and have been rooting for it ever since. Barbara Kingsolver is a favorite author of mine. She is so deserving. I feel like her writing has led her to this moment. Demon Copperhead is brilliant, empathetic and educational. I live 30 mins from West Virginia. Whenever I drive there, I am looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes and I love that.
It does feel like Kingsolver's writing led her to this moment--but in the best way possible. Kingsolver stepped up to the plate with Demon Copperhead and seriously knocked it out of the park. It's the perfect combination of the right book with the right author. I was more mixed on Trust but I can see why people like it so much. I'm fine with the way things turned out.
Good job Greg and a fun video. I like you feel bad for King Rao and I remember it but have not read it but will be looking for it. Do you think it could sort of a make up for Diaz not winning for In The Distance (I still think about that book) and a lifetime achievement for Kingsolver as I think she could have won for The Lacuna or Poisonwood. Not to be disparaging on either book but we love a good conspiracy
I think it’s a combo of both. Diaz has been building a reputation for himself since his last nomination and Trust really made a case for itself with its unanticipated timeliness. And Kingsolver has the lifetime achievement factor but you don’t have to feel guilty about it because she really knocked Demon Copperhead out of the park.
Your reaction is perfect!! I read both and was hoping Trust would win but Kingsolver has been a favorite author since Animal Dreams. This is an extraordinary award decision and I’m so pleased.
I've only read four Kingsolver books total but she's an author I've liked and respected for a long time, and Demon Copperhead feels like a huge achievement for her.
I loved seeing your joy when the announcement was made. 🙂 I have Demon Copperhead on hold at my library and can’t wait to read it…mostly based on your recommendation.
This was just the best! I don't really follow the pulitzer prize, but I do love watching your videos on it, and this was just the cherry on top of the cake!
I read the announcement and I thought you would simply lose it. I have not yet read Demon. I liked Trust but I absolutely loved his earlier book In the Distance. It feels like the Jury/Board is recognizing a member of the old guard while acknowledging a new voice.
Oh, I definitely lost it. 🤪 I really want to read In the Distance, even though Trust left me a little cold. I do think Diaz is a great writer. I hope you like Demon Copperhead if you try it!
@@SupposedlyFun I encourage you to try In the Distance. Its totally different and I would not have said they were the same author. Bernie Lombardy and Shawn the Book Maniac had a zoom chat about it. If that doesnt convince you to give it a go nothing will!
Aw, Greg, I'm so happy for you! When I saw the news yesterday, I was thinking 'oh, Greg is going to be over the moon about this!' 😀 I absolutely love The Poisonwood Bible, but haven't read Demon Copperhead yet. I shall have to rectify that now. I'm interested in reading Trust as well. I liked your thoughts on why they were both selected as winners, and maybe the jurors will say more about why they chose both this time. Fantastic to see another woman get a Pulitzer as well.
Thank you! I'm so happy that so many people thought of me when they heard the news. I doubt the jury or the Board will release a statement but we'll see!
I just love you! Because of your channel I got over my big book phobia and am reading Demon Copperhead. I don’t want these characters to end. Your reaction and excitement literally gave me overall body chills - even though I knew the outcome 😁🥲 Thank you ❤
I think you were probably more nervous than Barbara Kingsolver! You’re my go to channel for the Pulitzer. You approach books with a balance of intellect and passion. I loved Demon Copperhead (my copy is the UK special edition with the beautiful blue and black spine). I’ve been meaning to reread the Poisonwood Bible. I appreciated the last section of Trust but love how your favorite won and so did your prediction. How uncanny is that? I have Stay True and can’t wait to read it.
I love your excitement, it’s so infectious! When I saw the announcement and they said 2 winners, my mouth literally dropped open and my first thought was “omg, I can’t wait to watch Greg’s video” 😄 I reeeally don’t get why everyone loves Trust, very meh in my opinion. Haven’t read the Barbara Kingsolver yet, but you’ve made me want to pick it up!
I've had Demon Copperhead on my staff picks shelf at the bookstore where I work all week, and I was pumped to see it win. Surprised at the double pick for the win, for sure. I guess I'll actually have to read Trust now.
This was insane!!!! So crazy and it makes me excited to read both authors. I am drawn to In The Distance more than Trust and definitely want to check out The Poisonwood Bible as well. Happy for both of them and their careers! And for you and your predictions! I found it really interesting outside of the fiction category how His Name Is George Floyd was a finalist for biography but won for general nonfiction. Maybe that happens more often than I think, but that was very interesting. It was especially crazy that it was one of *four* finalists in the nonfiction category. Maybe the other categories work differently, but maybe this was a situation where the jury gave the board 3 finalists and they chose His Name instead of those options? (I think that is what happened with All The Light We Cannot See in 2015?) I thought that would be the story of the prizes this year but I am pleasantly shocked at there being even more craziness!!! I've put a hold on the Demon Copperhead audiobook from my library and hope the 8 people in front of me are quick!!! Loved your video!
I hope you like Demon Copperhead as much as I did! I think I was so nervous that I didn’t pay very good attention to the other categories. I’ll have to go back and look!
I am so excited. I said Saturday it was going to be either Demon Copperhead or Trust. Now it is both. Now the question is can it win the Women's Prize as well?
@@SupposedlyFun I would hope that it could win both. I know you were not a huge fan of The Marriage Portrait but I still consider that a top contender. However no author has ever won two women's prizes. Are they going to allow it to happen this year? I think the other top contender is Trespasses by Louise Kennedy. I would love to be able to hear the conversation of the judges for the Women's Prize after this happened.
I agree--the discussion would be fascinating. I think Kingsolver would be a better candidate for a second prize without this win. We'll find out in June! I think I'm going to leave my birthday wish on Kingsolver.
Not yet but I was hoping to get to it before June. If I can get the next two audiobooks off my plate with time to spare, I'm going to try to tackle it.
So happy for you! Your reaction was so joyful to watch 😊 I’m reading the Women’s Prize shortlist and am saving Demon for last because my anticipation to read it is helping me get through the others faster 😆 Do you think the Pulitzer win will hinder DC’s chances for the WPFF?
I love that books can cause this excitement.
Me too!
I think I am happier for you than I am for Barbara Kingsolver! 😂
I'll take it! 🥂

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who was that excited! What a wild ride.

I'm glad the video made your day! 📚 🥂
It looked like you won the prize!!!!
😂 You would think!
lol...i am very happy for you greg....it was fun watching you hear she'd won.
Thank you! 🥂
Greg, you are the absolute cutest!! I read Demon Copperhead based on your recommendation. I'm so happy it won. I guess I will try TRUST too!
Thank you! I hope you like Trust better than I did. 📚🥂
Love your passion man ❤
Thank you! 📚 🥂
I was really pleased, too!
What a surprising, exciting announcement!
What a great reaction! What passion and enthusiasm! Congratulations on a spot on prediction ;)
Thank you so much!
Honestly, I think it made for a more exciting announcement. And I don’t feel cheated because it really feels like they chose their three favorites.
I want my book shelves to look like yours!
I absolutely LOVE the new library! I want it to look like this forever. ❤️
So happy for Barbara Kingsolver.🎉 Demon Copperhead is my favourite book of this year so far, such an amazing feat of writing. I will definitely need to read Trust.
I agree--Demon Copperhead is a tremendous achievement. I hope you like Trust better than I did!
@@SupposedlyFun I hope so, but it does sound like I might struggle with it. I’m so intrigued by the two winners situation!
@@AliceandtheGiantBookshelf I might have a video coming about that. 🤫
Love your excitement! 😁
Thank you!
So happy to see both of these books win. They are so different but outstanding in their own right.
I definitely prefer Demon Copperhead, but I can see why people like Trust.
I hope you like it as much as I did!
This is the joy that the world 🌎 needs.. 😊🥰
Thank you! I'm glad it didn't just look weird. 😉
This was just the best! I don't really follow the pulitzer prize, but I do love watching your videos on it, and this was just the cherry on top of the cake!
Thank you! 📚🥂
😂! You picked up DC and hugged it ! I feel it 😂. I had to comment twice. Love this video so much and I’m so glad DC won 📕🪱💚
I love Demon Copperhead and I'm so glad it won!
I really want to read In the Distance, even though Trust left me a little cold.
I'll look for that video! Thanks.
So happy she won!
I am, too!
Cant wait for the Pulitzer deep dive video(s) 🎉
I'm already thinking about how (and when) to do them.
omg that’s amazing about your predictions!!
Who would have guessed?
Congrats!
Thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this!!!
Me too! Feels like I've been waiting all year!
Yay!! When I read Demon Copperhead on pub day, I told my bookclub that it was going to win a Pulitzer.
I was hoping the same around the same time!
@@SupposedlyFun 😀I loved your reaction.
Thank you! 📚🥂
I just love you!
Because of your channel I got over my big book phobia and am reading Demon Copperhead. I don’t want these characters to end.
Your reaction and excitement literally gave me overall body chills - even though I knew the outcome 😁🥲
Thank you ❤
My reaction was so similar to yours! I was so excited I scared my cat
I love that! (I guess not for your cat, though 😂)
It's definitely uncanny! How funny that I was so torn between them and then they both won. What a year! I need to reread The Poisonwood Bible, too.
I'm so honored that so many people are telling me that they couldn't wait for my video. I'm glad it was worth it!
I've had Demon Copperhead on my staff picks shelf at the bookstore where I work all week, and I was pumped to see it win. Surprised at the double pick for the win, for sure. I guess I'll actually have to read Trust now.
I mean, I’m definitely more in favor of Demon Copperhead but I would be curious to hear your thoughts if you do read Trust.
🤯 WOW! I can't believe there was TWO winners!!! 🤯
I can't believe it either!
My two favorite books of the year!!
What luck!
Amazing jury!
I would absolutely hang in a room with them to talk about books.
I’m fortunate to be reading demon copperhead right now
I was reading Less when it was announced as the 2018 winner and I felt so fancy. I hope you do as well!
Omg. I’m glad Damon Copperhead won. I read it months ago and it was wonderful.
It is a wonderful book.
So glad they went with two rather than none. Only thing better would have been to have Rez in the mix as well. Rao does sound ambitious.
Including Night of the Living Rez would have been incredible.
I am so excited. I said Saturday it was going to be either Demon Copperhead or Trust. Now it is both. Now the question is can it win the Women's Prize as well?
THAT is an interesting question. I'm guessing the Women's Prize will look elsewhere now. So where do I plant my birthday wish now??
@@SupposedlyFun Have you read Trespasses?
Not yet but I was hoping to get to it before June. If I can get the next two audiobooks off my plate with time to spare, I'm going to try to tackle it.
So happy for you! Your reaction was so joyful to watch 😊
I’m reading the Women’s Prize shortlist and am saving Demon for last because my anticipation to read it is helping me get through the others faster 😆 Do you think the Pulitzer win will hinder DC’s chances for the WPFF?
Thanks! I think the one-two punch of Kingsolver winning the Pulitzer AND being a previous winner of the Women's Prize will hinder her chances.
Demon Copperhead is the best book I have read in awhile. I absolutely loved it and didnt want it to end. Everyone should read this book ❤
I agree! It's such a good and human story. I love it.
Night of the Living Rez won the National Book Award.
Tess Gunty won the National Book Award for The Rabbit Hutch, but Night of the Living Rez did pick up some other prizes.
@@SupposedlyFun Oops! I meant the National Book Critics Award!
Makes sense!
I hated Trust but very pleased for Demon Copperhead.
I get it because I definitely am more excited about Demon.
I cannot stop laughing. You are priceless🫣🥰
🤗📚🥂
I didn’t love Trust, but I get it. It’s just objectively well made; great writing, unique storytelling etc.
I definitely think recent headlines have made a great case for Trust.
lol. you called it!
It goes to show: you NEVER know!
I correctly predicted Trust would win.
What a year! There's no way to top this in 2024.
