I remember when Marge Simpson painted a nude picture of Mr. Burns. She had to paint a portrait of him, but couldn't find any good in him so it was hard for her to paint him. She then decided to paint him nude. Why? “I wanted to show that beneath Mr. Burns' fearsome head, with its cruel lips, spiteful tongue and evil brain, there was a frail, withered body, perhaps not long for this world. As vulnerable and beautiful as any of God's creatures.” That was very deep and a good reason for a nude picture in a TV show.
There’s this Argentine actress who plays a character on a Spanish series called elite which includes a lot of scenes like this. She said in a talk show that she had to get a little bit drunk to be able to get through it, and everybody laughed at it while she said it, including herself… my heart broke for her. It’s horrifying to see how we have normalized all of this
Such an extremely balanced understanding of Christian morality. Something we so desperately need today in a Church full of extremes of far left and far right. Thankyou.

Most of the time that I've seen nudity on the screen, it seemed to be used to just titillate the audience and entirely unnecessary to advance the story.

On the topic of prudence re: actors, this is way intimacy coordinators are used on film sets. Just like a stunt coordinator, intimacy coordinators ensure that cast and crew members are afforded the comfort they need to perform in a professional manner.
Oh yeah, and I'm sure that works great. After all, ever since the hays code was kicked, it isn't like we've seen more and more actors go completely insane over time. I'm sure it's all entirely ethical, and there is no intimidation or coercion to be had.

Very good video Friar Casey. Years ago I just made the decision to NOT watch R rated movies - done deal. Even some PG-13 movies now have this content. It's everywhere, And while we are at it, the same goes for books. When ppl ask me why I won't watch/read this material my answer is this - "Would you watch it/read it with the Blessed Mother or Jesus sitting next to you? Probably not! Whatever your eyes see or your ears hear - they see/hear." I do not wish to offend my heavenly mother since her most Immaculate Heart is offended daily.
Fr Casey, I actually want a topic on “ subjective morality” if you have time. There are many minor issues where many priest have a different discernment regarding said topic. I always wondered, why do we have them? Doesn’t that go against our unity? A priest once told unity isnt the same as conformity.
Father Casey, this is a very difficult question to answer. But I think that you made a great attempt in answering the question and giving us something to think about. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Sexual pleasure is a Gift of God for procreation, and it is meant for husband and wife (life partner) to have among themselves privately. There is nothing to show off about it. The Sexual act itself is beautiful, but in today's world, it is corrupted by pornography and is used as a means to get temporary physical pleasure. This is misusing the gift God has given us. @@GioBruno9721 Yep, I'm really thankful to Fr Casey for this great overview 😉 And yes, Fr Pat seems to be back in the saddle. I'm looking forward to seem them team up again on their review channel soon 🧐
I can understand and follow the sexuality argument. I like the breakdown of the 3 components and actually taking consideration that the actors are acting this out. My question would just be with nudity? If for some reason a person makes a movie that is wholesome and geared to families, doesn’t have swearing, sexuality, or violence, and hypothetically most people could agree on the values in it but takes place at a nudist camp or people are just naked and it isn’t titillating or a big deal to the film makers to show it what then?
Well then you have to consider the point of nudism or naturism, which is just that regardless of your feelings of attraction, a nude body is still just a body, no more of a sexual object than it was when it had clothes on. Obviously if they are doing some sexualized dance or something else sexual is happening thats a different story, but stop to remember that people can do sexualized flirtatious things even with clothes on. We take showers, those arent sexual, and the privacy we have while taking them is a luxury of the modern age. The only immoral thing is immoral ACTIONS, theres nothing immoral about the body itself. Edit: All that being said I wouldnt go to a nudist beach or seek out nudity on purpose because I'd question my motives. Im not interested in being nude so am I going just to prove a point? Not a good idea. Just saying if I stumble upon it Ive done nothing wrong
Thank you so much for addressing this topic. I went on a bus trip and the live play was “trailer park trash” I went because I was interested in the rest of the trip- I walked out of the play after few minutes. It involved situations that I did not care to hear about, they were fully clothed but you knew was was going on. I do not like being a part of that culture.
I just had the exact same experience. I watched the evil dead and a scene at the beginning left me feeling scared of the lord’s judgement (if you’ve seen it you know the one). Just left me really shaken and I felt it was a little too far. Did not enjoy it whatsoever 😂😭
As a Hungarian watching this, it feels like you grew up as an only child/orphan, and then when you’re in your ~20/30, you get the info that you have a bunch of siblings/a whole family. Seeing common words burst out from nothing (like mi, ti, sapka etc.)… it just warms my hearth.
I am adding a comment here I put on the last video a few minutes ago. A question I would like you to address at some point. Or if you already have I would like a pointer to that video so I can see. I have seen several videos saying things like "Catholics go to hell because they profess things that are not biblical" or "most Catholics are doomed because of wrong teaching." Obviously you do not agree, but I would like to know what you might think about protestants and their chances and why. Also I would like you to pick one, or if you like I can pick one and have you respond. Thanks in advance. I have learned a lot here and at the other channel, Upon Friar Review.
Absolutely not, never ever; as they make a profoundly morally toxic experience; we have a duty to preserve our purity, and that means to remove all access nudity would or even could have to our lives, including overruling God if it comes to it!
@@onemercilessming1342 There's also the Sistine Last Judgement (by the same artist as the David), where every single one of the hundreds of figures is unclothed. It was meant to be symbolic, of how everything about us will be laid bare at the General Judgement at the end of time, and yet... some people in the Vatican hierarchy went a bit Hayes Code and after Michaelangelo's death, and hired a guy to paint over all the intimate bits on the figures (other ideas included *covering the entire mural in plaster* Owch). The guy ended up with a nickname that translated to "the pants maker". One part with a soul being dragged to hell by a demon gripping him by the boy bits was completely painted over, only to be rediscovered when the overpainting was removed during the pontificate of St. John Paull II.
@MatrixRefugee I vaguely remember people lopping off the genitalia of Greek statues, but my Art History college class was 54 years ago, so what epoch that was escapes me just now.
You were there to study the body like a doctor, not ogle. 😂 I remember before attending my first figure drawing class, I was worried about people snickering and making lewd comments. Robert Barron has made a bunch of videos on the spiritual teachings that can be found in popular entertainment, with many of the examples featuring "gratuitous and titillating" nudity and violence. I think he has a healthy attitude and can appreciate art even when not conforming to Casey's narrow criteria for acceptability.
No, Father Casey, it is *never* impossible to remove pornography but to accept things like crime stories- the rules simply have to be laid down. A brief review of what constitutes the definition of pornography I researched told me that the whole definition is something intended to trigger a *sexual* response on the part of the viewer/reader; so that's the standard I use- in film I'm somewhat stricter, however, as nudity in film is often if not always something that makes the film a morally hazardous workplace for the film workers; so I willingly boycott such films- and have to be stricter in defense of purity still, regardless of any ability. We have a task to do, and we will do it, heedless of ability; and if we fail, regardless of why, we're lucky if we wind up executed in the penal battalions, or sent to the gulags to work until our very souls no longer exist as punishment for our failures, regardless of the difficulty of the task, so no, it is *not capable of being an impossible task*, ever! We simply have to work on figuring out what is what until we do it right every single time, heedless of ability, so we *will* do just that, heedless of ability.
Thank you Father Casey, this is THE sin I have struggled with for as long as I can remember, even as a preschooler with no idea why women fascinated me. I do think you did a slight disservice to the PLAYBOYs of the Sixties, my tween and teen years. Yes, they did show nudity, but in a more artistic way than the other, raunchier men's magazines of the era, and their "girl next door" format did depict them as normal, wholesome, "nice girls" of the time, as students or mainstream jobs and waiting for Mr. Right to come along, not as strippers, prostitutes, "shocking divorcees", and the like, just waiting for the next guy, any guy, to come along, the way the other magazines did. And yes, they did sometimes lead me into deeply sinful sexual fantasies, but for the most part the led me into romantic fantasies of "the kind of girl I'm looking for", rather like the Louis L'Amour and Luke Short (et. al.) Westerns I read in which the cowboy gets the girl in The End and they live happily ever after, which I assumed included "doing what married people do", but had to assume because there was no play-by-play description. Still, the old PLAYBOYs and other, darker publications, DID lead me down darker trails, and still do, and I must say again thanks for the help (I need all I can get).
Supreme Court Justice Potter in the early 60s was asked by a litigant his definition of pornography. His answer, “ I know it when I see it.” As a Catholic you usually have fair warning if nudity is art or lascivious in a film.
Back in 1966 I ready an article in The Watchtower, the Jehovah's Witness magazine, which asked "Do Bible Principles govern your choice of entertainment ?"
The Padre Peo movie had porn in it. It told a story but it could have been told without being titillating, I was so sad seeing it because it could have been a great movie but it failed us.
Contemporary pop culture treats sexuality like a joke, and sexuality is no joke. Neglecting to treat sexuality with caution and respect is like juggling loaded pistols: sooner or later someone is going to be terribly injured.
Father, another great topic explored with reverence and wisdom. I would also be interested to hear your thoughts in a follow up video on the unfortunate next step in art and pornography: artificially generated images. Some might argue that because no humans are physically used in the making of such media, it could be less sinful. What are your thoughts?
The pacific. Showing true stories and the horrors of fighting the japanese in ww2. One of the marines goes insane from being on a tropical island away from home. Runs out of hus tent naked and crying and then kills himself. Truly a horrible thing to happen and a story to be told in order to understand the many horros of war.
Can you do a video, entitled “Do you think it is a sin if you watch bad UA-cam videos, of which contain pranks gone wrong and also people who get into trouble for views”.
We become what we contemplate . Hence the immorality and violence ( on women , children , abortion ... ) in the USA as well as in France ( I'm French ) . I'm feeling a sense of urgency deep down in my soul . Christ is coming sooner than we think so I no longer want to waste my time watching meaningless shows that promote debauchery and violence. Love , fast and pray the rosary ! 🙏🙏
And that 2nd remark I sent is rooted in the *secular* mindset of not making a sexually exploitive workplace as a vital ingredient for workplace regulations; so why should we tolerate being outpaced in defense of purity by the secularists? Never, let us get our pedals to the metal and get going in defense of purity, and the complete and utter removal of all impurity, no matter what!
I’m reminded of a scene in Black Adder part 3: “ the violence of the murder and the enormity of the bosom were complete justified for artistic reasons “
Legion of Decency said no. Then the little hat people of Hollywood released "Pawnbroker" intentionally designed as a film code-breaker with the argument that it has "redeeming value" to show nudity for the sake of the plot. The Legion of Decency caved, because the scene involving the nudity was in the context of the Holocaust and no one dared object to anything in that context at the time.
Depends on how one perceives it American culture is way more prude, to begin with when it comes to nudity compared to Europe and the past blaming the protestants. People used to bathe publicly, paint, and sculpt nudity we were born nude if you don't look at it in a perverse way theirs nothing to worry about.

Are you so sure about the initial purpose of nudity, especially of women, in art ... ? Even in religious art? And what about the models of the artist?
This is why you're my fave UA-camr
Great explanation
Supreme Court Justice Potter in the early 60s was asked by a litigant his definition of pornography. His answer, “ I know it when I see it.” As a Catholic you usually have fair warning if nudity is art or lascivious in a film.
There's not much fair warning imo.
Did Father Casey rip his intro right off of family guy?
Difficult with scruples 😕
No way he just quoted Family Guy
What do you think of the channel "Theology of the Body"?
Finally, a good quality video from this channel
Father can you comment on the german synod? I've heard some really weird things about it
>starts with the family guy intro
okay, father. okay. ill watch this one
you got age-restricted. You've finally arrived as a UA-camr lol
So ridiculous. I tried to fight it.
Is that a Family Guy reference?
Back in 1966 I ready an article in The Watchtower, the Jehovah's Witness magazine, which asked "Do Bible Principles govern your choice of entertainment ?"
The Padre Peo movie had porn in it. It told a story but it could have been told without being titillating, I was so sad seeing it because it could have been a great movie but it failed us.
WHAT HAPPENED TO UPON FRIAR REVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Contemporary pop culture treats sexuality like a joke, and sexuality is no joke. Neglecting to treat sexuality with caution and respect is like juggling loaded pistols: sooner or later someone is going to be terribly injured.
There are intimacy coordinators now and they have barriers for sensitive areas and camera angles can really mask a lot.
I think the best part was: if something makes you sin then avoid it... best advice ever.
I wish to join the church
I love you Father
Can you do a video, entitled “Do you think it is a sin if you watch bad UA-cam videos, of which contain pranks gone wrong and also people who get into trouble for views”.
New Fr Casey vid just dropped, dope.
What about depictions of violence?
Yeah….especially all those godfather/mafia movies!
I think a very small number of practicing Catholics would be concerned about this, Baptist on the other hand would be easy to find
Americans like crazy. 👍
Let me tell you something about radicalized Traditionalists, otherwise known as Rad Trads... those people are the Baptists of Catholicism.
5:48 "unlike simulated violence or green screen horror, nudity and s** can't be 100% faked"
ekhm, ekhm, "fight club"...
Ah! Ah! That's a Family Guy reference!!!
I’m reminded of a scene in Black Adder part 3:
“ the violence of the murder and the enormity of the bosom were complete justified for artistic reasons “
But where all those good 'ol fashioned values on which we use to rely?
Legion of Decency said no. Then the little hat people of Hollywood released "Pawnbroker" intentionally designed as a film code-breaker with the argument that it has "redeeming value" to show nudity for the sake of the plot. The Legion of Decency caved, because the scene involving the nudity was in the context of the Holocaust and no one dared object to anything in that context at the time.
I find Scenes of a graphic nature disturb my wellbeing .
Good vedio but I have a hard time with comercials. Peace Out and Love. MMLZZZ
So, wait... "Shaving Ryan's Privates" is right out?
I'll never make that mistake at blockbuster again!
Wise words!
Depends on how one perceives it American culture is way more prude, to begin with when it comes to nudity compared to Europe and the past blaming the protestants. People used to bathe publicly, paint, and sculpt nudity we were born nude if you don't look at it in a perverse way theirs nothing to worry about.
God bless y'all
Pureflix is not anti Catholic and takes a lot of good movies and edits the questionable scenes out for family and children viewing. We are God’s children!
I would say yes but only if it’s not being done in a lustful way and it serves some purpose to the story.
Weren't Adam and Eve created "naked and were not ashamed"?
He says that about one minute in, goofy.
@@Curious-n1u Nonsense.
Excellent
