  • Millions of South Africans plunged into darkness, as the country's energy crisis deepens. How are people coping with the worst power cuts on record?
    South Africa's president Cyril Ramaphosa is holding emergency meetings to address the country's deepening energy crisis.
    Authorities have been imposing rolling blackouts as the nation's embattled power utility struggles to meet demand - and the power cuts are hitting the economy hard.

    In the 1990s a massive electrification programme was rolled out. Demand rose like never before. Presidents Mandela and Deputy (later President) Mbeki were informed, and then clearly warned: build more generation capacity or we will reach a tipping point in 2007. Nobody did anything. And "load shedding" began in 2008. An interesting irony is that in 2001, SA power utility Eskom won an international award for providing the cheapest, most available and reliable electricity in the world. There is an expensive solution. Hybrid solar PV (connected to the grid with batteries). Even better if it is connected as a smart distributed power plant earning money when demand is high. More efficient devices would help as well, but that would need to be done at scale. Might as well build a peaker plant.
      It's not feasible for most people, so people are left to adapt. Either put up with it or get a generator that is cheaper in short term.
      One of the cheapest ways to get hybrid solar PV is to get an EPEver inverter/charge controller (can't back feed to the grid), and Tier 1 solar panels like Jinko Solar. Due to the low reliability of the power grid batteries are a must. EVE LFP or similar cells can be imported from China just like all the other components. Smart BMS is better so the cycle life of batteries can be extended and battery chemistry can be changed in the future. Na-ion will compete price-wise with LFP in stationary battery storage. All the components can be found on Alibaba :)

    South Africa's condition is a dire one. Our people have elected Animal Farm's Napoleon. Unfortunately it's not just a matter of "stop voting for the ANC". The educated within our population will most certainly exercise their right and vote against this cancer of a government. However, one must note how strategic the government has been to remain in power. They have kept our people in abject poverty and have ensured that the masses remain uneducated because they understand that the biggest threat to any ill government is an educated population. Which is why all it takes to buy a vote is a mere t-shirt and an empty promise.

    It is amazing that South Africans could so quickly deconstruct their country despite all its natural wealth,good universities, and human capital (except that some of best brains began leaving the country) Bravo!!!

      Functioning governments in Europe? Yes, those who cut their nose to spite their face. Those who import our coal, up about 720% in the first 6 months of 2022, because the transition from coal power plants was so successful and lets not mention sanctions. What is not mentioned here is the lower grade coal used in our plants, because of corruption and theft, while the high grade in exported. But authorities assured us coal exports has nothing to do with loadshedding, it's just a coincidence that last year was the worst ever.

    • @sdkfz2519
      @sdkfz2519 Рік тому

      @RevisionistCrap South Africa has been in decline for at least a decade. Corruption and crime have been growing, while investment by the private sector (and by the government) has been in decline. With respect to the "coal" question: Don't blame the EU. Firstly, they paid for it, did they not? Second, South Africa is selling coal to China (its biggest costumer), and it has plenty of excess production capacity. The problem is not coal export. The problem is corruption (at the government, local and personal level ....including many regular citizens who have little positive output for their society) and lack of investment.

      The natural wealth is in the hands of a select few people, and has been for well over a hundred years, benefitting countries like the US, UK and Israel. The Universities are a shell of their former self, and the human capital is lazy, all wanting to be students in these useless secondary learning institutions, "studying" in useless fields and 90% never even graduate. Don't think this decay just happened because of bad governance. This was planned decades ago, and the goverment was installed, to facilitate the complete destruction of the country, which should have been one of the richest countries in the world.

    The highest average school education of an ANC South African Minister is around Grade 6. They appoint a former Minister of Housing to Minister to run the Department of Military Defence. Appoint ANC lackeys as CEO`s / Ministers with no tertiary education to run SAA, Transport, Eskom, Tourism and SABC. 60 % plus of the municipalities are under financial administration. It`s a total mess and sadly one I cannot see SA ever recovering from. We are into deep.

    To add to this electricity is increasing by over 18% (they wanted 32%) so that they can cover their mismanagement and this will have a massive impact on our economy with companies already losing out when they can't work due to no electricity and now have to pay 18% more on electricity. A lot of South Africans are losing jobs and not being paid on the days they can not work due to no electricity which will in turn lead to more crime. In the mid-1990's the government/Eskom was told they need to look into new infrastructure but did nothing about it.

Shady nuclear deals with Russia without consultation. Overwhelming support against oil drilling and fracking from the Traditional Leaders and communities.
