2018 was an awkward, in-between kind of phase for Taylor Swift and her fandom. It was uncharacteristically quiet for a year of an album cycle. There were some months where she wasn’t pictured at all, and her actual public appearances beyond the Reputation Stadium Tour were few and far between. Nevertheless, we found a lot to say about it. But of course, The Snakes cover the record-breaking tour, the setlist, guest appearances, and outfits. There are a few moments of hilarity: Katy Perry’s literal olive branch, the announcement of Taylor’s starring role as Bombalurina in Cats, and her first foray into activism. It was the year of TaydemoCAT. We end this transitional period with a stormy horizon: a new record deal with Republic and Universal.

Lover has grown on me exponentially, & I truly do now consider it a well made & beautiful record with several really great songs & good bops . But at the time of it's release, I was soooo underwhelmed by it.

If 2018 was a flop year, I would love to have multiple flop years. I went to the rep tour that year in Kentucky (sad she's not playing at the Cardinal Stadium on the second U.S. leg) and it is hands-down one of the greatest experiences I had of the 2010s. Seeing her perform at this level for the first time since attending one of the Fearless Tour shows was a revolution for me.
I really think the whole entire problem with end game is that no one wanted to think of Ed Sheeran as love interest on the song/in the video and no one could figure out who the song was about, because the “big reputation” line doesn’t make sense to be about Joe and it’s weird for three people to be talking about “endgame”. If instead of future and Ed Sheeran, the feature had been Drake, that song would have been a supersonic hit.
Drake is poison & that’s when people started mentioning it more. He was the one who gave Taylor advice on the “hip-hop inspired” album that was Reputation
Nooo, in the year of our Lord 2024 we are all thankful that there isn't a Drake feature on a Taylor song. He'd be in her music video! Just, no, don't even make me think about it.
What I remember the clearest of rep era is the merch clear out and how crazy cheap everything was lol. Plus, the quality was better and rep merch in particular was good. We internationals haven't had it that good to buy merch ever again

Fun fact: the delicate music video seems almost completely inspired from a Sephora Brazil commercial (video is called Kenzo World, as of the last time I saw it). Insanely similar concept, nearly the same color of dress, and yes she dances around after being at a fancy event. Just thought it was humorous to share 🤷🏻♀️😆

For the Eras tour - I ended up with Section A, row I think 15 and it was very mixed bag. Awesome for Antihero, Look What you Made Me Do, and the Folklore cabin songs but otherwise not ideal. But when it was good it was good
The vertical version of Delicate , which is just Taylor spinning around in a field, is sooo much more of a fit to the song. The original music video just didn't fit the vibe.

So sorry for being lame, but in 22:21, Taylor wasnt even doing a split 🤣 I do ballet and as yall know cars are like arched in a way, that was not a full split tbh... Like in her dance practice, maybe it was a split but in the MV, that was def not a full split and her being happy with it was just hilarious 😂
Well- generally speaking, the works was still not being very kind to her in 2018. She said she couldn’t handle interviews because how she felt changed day to day, hour to hour and didn’t think she could handle the prying questions she knew would come. I also think she was testing the waters and didn’t want to risk overexposure or giving too much to have backlash about. Remember the media claiming her tour would be a flop and despite the sales, the album got panned, comments about her weight gain, so by not being “out there” wouldn’t give anyone a chance to take a swipe at me. I agree she was struggling with confidence issues (understandably), and we didn’t know she and Scott B were on the outs over her masters and new contract, which must have been hard given her lack of confidence.

Sometimes I wonder if TS is embarrassed by Reputation. Her comment during the eras tour when she said, “thank you for supporting me during reputation and that album whatever it was” (I’m paraphrasing) stuck with me.
I don’t think she feels embarrassed the album exists as is, but I wonder if she views that whole time as something that’s difficult to look back on. Painful and embarrassing.

I think the thing about reputation is that a lot of people don't see it the way Taylor thought it would be received. In the interview with Time she said that reputation “It's a goth-punk moment of female rage at being gaslit by an entire social structure” but “I think a lot of people see it and they're just like,' Sick snakes and strobe lights."
I think the songs from the vault will further explore this theme of criticizing society and how artists are treated.

The fun thing is, this is the about the time in her career in which the process of becoming a swiftie started for me. I literally didn’t know a single thing about her private life at the time, I never listened to much pop music so I barely knew the first thing about her (I liked Blank Space though); but in 2017 I started working in this ice-cream shop, at which some pop radio was blasting 24/7, and one day Look What You Made Me Do came on, and I was like.... "This woman knows how to write. What’s up with the hook though? Why??" But at that point I was listening. When "Are you ready for it?" and "End Game" came I was seated and waiting for more. No context, but I just loved it. And if she had decided to go cheerleader on end game I would not have liked the video as much as I did, even though I was probably the only one (the rep lip thing buffled me too though, despite not knowing she's usually that literal)
For the Delicate MV : Same!! I had stayed up to watch it back when I was 16 and I was SO DISAPPOINTED because it was NOT what I expected!

As a rep tour attendee I hated the openers 😆 I don’t think either fit the vibe of Taylor OR Rep: i remember thinking both performances were cringe and boring

I was also there for her Rep tour and the opening with the video and "are you ready for it?" was so epic. All eyes were glued to the stage when Taylor swagged out in that bodysuit. She was so sexy and fierce.
I think Kim K and all the bullying drama really left her feeling broken, and the Rep tour was such an empowering moment for her.
She had so much going on in between 1989 and Rep. It truly seemed like she was battling half the world. And on top of it, she was also battling an E.D., her Mom was sick with cancer, and both business and personal relationships were crashing and burning.
I think when the turkey entered the scene, he convinced her that he could save her and she allowed it for time. Then as she healed, she realized she wasn't going to be content with that odd man who kept her hidden away. Thus, I think Matty Healy was another getaway car for her. Old habits die screaming, after all.
Repuatation seems to be way more popular now than it was back then. We know it was snubbed by the Grammys and the critics didn't love it. I think the album was ahead of its time. Now I'm seeing rappers, producers, etc. reacting to Rep aongs left and right and losing their minds over it (in a good way). So I think Rep TV is going to be huge ( alsoin part because of the Eras tour too).

Kacey has stood up to Nashville radio on multiple occasions. There was a rumor that she refused to sit on some guy's lap when she first started and that guy went after her and launched a campaign against her. She stood up for gay rights and marijuana use and talked about it in interviews. She's consistently refused to play the game with Country Music.
You should look into some of rhe sexism and sexual abuse in Country Music. It's full of misogyny

@theswiftologist Actually, Nashville did their own distancing from her, they removed her from a mural of Country Legends that was on the side of Legends Bar in Downtown. She was covered up by Brad Paisley, the owner said people felt betrayed by her move to pop and were spitting on her image on the mural. I don't think her old songs get played on Nashville stations anymore and she almost never gets mentioned. She's been Dixie Chicked but in a more subtle way. I personally thought the whole New York thing was her way of clapping back at the she's not real country crowd who has existed since she started.

Rep era is truly bizarre but iconic too. I think the problem why public and even fans had problem to get into it was her uncertainty of committing to the persona 100%. Taylor was mentally kinda all over the place. Just as you said cats, democrat and secret girlfriend was her personality the whole year. She truly felt like she didn´t want to be a pop star anymore. But the Rep era singles rollout was the weirdest.The single choices weren´t bad they just had such a bad timing and arrangement. I still can´t understand how I Did Something Bad, Getaway Car and Don´t Blame Me weren´t singles, because they are literally perfect. I would go for this rollout:
Lead Single: Look What You Made Me Do - it was the moment
2nd Single: I Did Something Bad - almost immediately after LWYMMD and promote them together almost like a double single. They are 2 sides of the same coin the difference is that LWYMMD is weird and for the moment and IDSB is the catchy fun banger for the radio.
3rd Single: ...Ready For It
4th Single: Delicate
5th Single: Getaway Car
6th Single: Don´t Blame Me
7th Single (if there is because of fallout with Big Machine) - End Game
2018 was the last year when you could go on a huge era with a lot of singles, so i think it was stupid to end it on 4th one.

I agree with you about how Taylor molds herself to who she is dating, including how she dresses (she always has to put in her boyfriends clothes - beanies, scarves, plaid shirts, leather jackets - and god forbid- she wore socks with sandals when seeing Matty (which is what Matty does 🤢). I had hoped being in a relationship for 6 years she would have grown up a bit but when I saw the socks & sandals I died a bit inside. Taylor really doesn’t do well without a guy in her life which is a shame because she is Taylor f*g Swift so I wish she realized she doesn’t need to grab the first guy who looks her way… sigh.

I feel like endgame should have been on lover because it was more of a lover type song similar to miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince like The Vibes of reputation are very kind of grungy but also hopeful and endgame isn't that grungy so I feel like it just doesn't belong on reputation
