    11:30 Basically, Tarlok sees it as a win-win situation. If Amon doesn't show, it gives the public perception that's he's weak. If Korra beats Amon, well it was his task force that enabled her to succeed. And if Korra is defeated by Amon and loses her bending, Tarlok can use it to rally benders and justify more actions against non-benders; Amon even says this to Korra about being a martyr.

    At around 7:30 when you talk about the paparazzi, I never thought it was strange, I always thought that they were subtly implying that Tarlok set up the paparazzi to be there, put pressure on Kora and ask her the "are you scared" question specifically because he picked up she was at dinner and knew that would call her bluff and get her to join the task force. Hence him pushing her to answer the questions. It would be harder to imply he manipulated the situation if the paps swarmed her when she arrived.

    I think Tarlok's plan was what Amon avoided. If Amon took Korra's bending away right there he would have a way to get the support of every bender and nation to fight amon. Tarlok not knowing that Amon is his bloodbending brother probably also gave him the confidence that he would beat him. After gaining this support and defeating Amon, Tarlok would have all the political power he wanted all this time. Korra would become a martyr and Tarlok would be the savior. The reason he does take Korra's bending away at the end of the series is because he needed the time to prepare. At the beginning Amon mentioned that they had to prepare and act faster then what he planned because of the avatar returning to Republic City. So in my opinion it's logical that Amon didn't do what Tarlok had planned (taking Korra's bedning away). Instead he waited for the right time to do it. This also explains the evil grin on tarlok's face when Korra asked to duel Amon. At best she would be defeated and have her bedning taken away, thus causing Tarlok to receive massive amounts of political power I previously mentioned. And at the worst Amon would be taken care of by Korra.

    • @DarkDyllon
      @DarkDyllon Рік тому +27

      to me the whole Amon sparing Korra here was more an "i'll set an example of you, not by taking away your bending, but by crippling your spirit, only once that's broken, i'll take your bending away"
      in the end, Amon's "goal" for his group (atleast his group believes this) is to get rid of benders so everyone is equal, Korra being the avater and able to bend all 4 elements poses a problem for his ideal.
      what garners more support from the general public that aren't benders, an avater outright defeated and her bending taken away, or showing that even the Avatar in all her might can loose a fight, but is so scared of the opposition that she can't do anything anymore.

    • @TheR00k
      @TheR00k Рік тому

      @@DarkDyllonThe only problem with that "cripple the spirit" plan is NOT CAPTURING KORRA.
      You have her, she's here, tied up, outnumbered 15 to 1. You were already planning your Houdini-level escape, knock her out and take her with you!
      Now the council will have to escalate, oppressing non-benders in a full-on paranoia. Now the city police will have to look for Korra with Lin Beifong leading the investigation, so you can even accelerate your whole "defang the police" part of the master plan by using Korra as bait.
      Even if it doesn't work out, you can just release the Avatar as a show of good faith.
      Now I know that would never fly with Nickelodeon, but that's a Doylian reason, not a Watsonian one.

    • @javi7636
      @javi7636 Рік тому +9

      Exactly. From Tarlok's point of view, either outcome of the fight would escalate the conflict between benders and equalists, benefitting him in his pursuit of power. But he has to pretend he doesn't support Korra fighting so that he can't be blamed for sending her to her doom if she loses.

    I think it would've been interesting if Asami was an Equalist or at least an Equalist sympathizer but in a way where you understand where she's coming from. She doesn't hate benders, but she is wary of them since she's seen how innocent people are taken advantage of by gangs like the Terra Triad and agrees that people like that should have their bending taken away. You could even add that when her father was starting up his business, he was threatened with protection money by firebending gang, and when he couldn't immediately pay it, they took his wife hostage, and she died when he couldn't come up with the money. She does eventually turn against the Equalist when she sees how insane they've become and have started to oppress innocent benders like Mako and Bolin, which is not what she wanted.

    The reason Tarloq has the gavel is for similar reasons sometimes only one city council member has the gavel while the others don't. It's not because they have more power or anything like that, it's simply a ceremonial or procedural role that rotates between members meaning anyone and everyone on the council can and/or has had the gavel at one point or another. Also, the reason Mako looks disheveled is that he might've just gotten off his shift from shooting electricity into generators. What I never got over when watching season 1 was how earthbenders would be insanely effective against the chi blockers. Like, literally just make a rock armor suit like toph makes. They wouldn't be able to hit your weak points to stop your chi, the rock would stop electricity, and you could still just bend the rock around you to attack them. Metal benders could do it with metal, (again like Toph does), and it would be the same. But rock would probably be better as it wouldn't conduct electricity. Maybe creating a rock armor suit is advanced earth bending, but most of the people fighting chi blockers are police, who are metal benders, which already means they're advanced earth benders. So they would most likely be able to make a rock armor suit as well.

Mako and Bolin had this issue, and for Asami it's even more obvious. If they had more time (or more direct continuity between seasons) they could have taken it more slowly - introduce her as a potential sponsor early, but keep her to the background, as tensions rise she gets concerned with the team and tries her best to help them stay safe, so by the time the Equalists attack the arena, she has naturally grown closer to them and you can set her up as a full member of the main cast going into season 2. Instead they had to make her a part of the team throughout season 1, which resulted in this rushed "btw, Asami is a thing now!"

It was a "never seen either of them int he same room" kind of feeling that I affirmed by Korra not receiving any help like Tarlok said she would. I will also note that even though it is an inconsistency, it also has the side effect that it clues the viewers in that Tarrlok was worse than just a politician wanting power.

    13:02 You can barely see it, but one of the chi blockers is holding a lantern... Still doesn't make it any less weird that the light is centered around Korra specifically though.

    Ah yes. The episode that actually scared our protagonist to her very core. While Amon would eventually regret his decision to not finish off the Avatar right here and now. This is the scene that made me want to give Korra a hug. Then again Tenzin did a good job comforting her like the good mentor that he is.

      If he can block someone’s chi paths to stop their bending indefinitely then it makes sense if he learned the chi paths and chi blocking this would have to be very advanced chi blocking though since he is the only person that knocks someone unconscious with chi blocking so you probably have to apply the exact right amount of pressure on the exact right place also 15:43 is closer to the scene

    Going deeper into the link between korra's identity and her bending: it's also important to note that she's known she's the avatar since she was like 4. Other avatars were allowed to grow and have a childhood before the secret was revieled and their training began. But for Korra, her identity as the avatar is all she realy has because their was never realy a time in her life when she had the opportunity to build anything else.

    Tarlok being the only one with a gavel is actually decent world building, it suggest that's he the equivalent to the House Speaker. Every legislative body has a similar position to it, and it makes perfect sense that this council would elect amongst themselves someone to keep order during deliberation. You could make the claim that Tenzin would be better suited to it, and should have the role, but if you want to microanalyze it you can come to the conclusion that at some point in the past Tarlok weaseled his way in to that position in the pursuit of ever more power which fits his character.

    Amon making an exemple of Korra here is such a powerful scene. He could take away her bending, yes, but it would bring way too much attention at a time he isn't planning on it (remember, this fight was Korras idea, his plans are on pace to want this attention later).
    Just letting her go, without any consequences to her bending, is WAY more than enough, she's terrified. She has her bending, but is afraid to use it, afraid to fight, so she probably will be afraid to step in suddenly in his plans again for the foreseeable future. It's probably harder for her to try to stop him now that if he had taken it and made her enraged, because she still has something to lose
    Btw i THINK Satos "backstory" about how he just suddenly thought about cars is supposed to mirror real-life poor-to-millionaire backstories. Im not sure its intentional but "Ow i was just a regular worker like every one of you than i just decided to be a genius and conquered everything i have" is like the number 1 story to ignore/cope with privileges, and considering how he ends up, i think it makes sense
    Also the Mako bit was hilarious, im still laughing about it

      My guy, he's literally Henry Ford. Like, Ford was a mechanic of some kind rather than a shoe shiner but he came from an immigrant family of farmers. Even the wiki notes the parallel cos it's blindingly obvious.
      "Despite some fan misconception, Hiroshi did not invent the automobile in-universe, but was the person to develop it into a viable technology for everyday use. Furthering the parallels, Ford is also frequently mistaken as the inventor of the automobile, but was instead the first person to create a truly viable version of it."
      This was the 1800's US you actually COULD get rich with luck and hard work back then. The old money wasn't entrenched. I mean it's also survivour bias but his backstory in the time period is belivable given it's based on a real guy.

      @@vivusthevivusthing6182 I didn't deny that, tho I really didn't know about Ford's backstory as a shoe shiner. If that's the case, it's even more blatant parody of what I had talked about because if he really is like Ford, he isn't quite the person to make the first CAR, but the first really sucessful car production, which is even less accessible for people on the working class, specially at the time and specially for a non-bender in a world so unfair to them as Korra's. Both Hiroshi and Ford definetly had a way less difficult past that they tell or had some miraculous opportunities fall onto their lapses

      @@adv78 I said in my comment ford was a mechanic from a immigrant farmer family not a shoe shiner. Also that haroshi didn't invent the car but made them more affordable like ford did. And yes they both did get extremely lucky which Hiroshi's shoe shiner speech doesn't deny his whole point in that line (though actually a veiled plot to get the avatar more invested in pro bending for equalist reasons) was that he knows that if you pounce on one good opportunity you can go from nothing to a lot. He wasn't denying the need for a lucky break he was offering one.

    2 things I think this show has over ATLA are the fights and how punchy they are, and the emotion. Characters in ATLA could get pretty emotional at times, but LoK takes it to a new level imo. They kind of do a sort of happy middle between that ugly/raw crying in Arcane while also keeping it a bit more subdued. If I remember correctly, this isn't even the only time we get that kind of emotion from Korra and friends in the series. And I like that a lot. I always get a little disappointed when characters don't get to release their emotions in ways that aren't outbursts of anger and frustration. Doesn't have to be crying or whatever, could be a panic attack or just a shutting down (like S4)
