This is definitely what I struggled with. Not because I didn't have enough to talk about but because I talked too much and tried to make a history that spanned the entire length of human history. You are right to caution against trying to match our history in terms of longevity and duration.
I hadn't thought of how schisms have led to cultural identifying markers, though. The example of the cross and your bracelets are such a perfect examples of that. And can I say that a religious organization that is open to change is such a breath of fresh air??? Wow.
I love how you mentioned the origin of a time limit to debates being one priest who went on and on too long once long ago. If I may make a suggestion, that priest's name should be what people call others who go on and on when they talk. "Oh shut it and stop being such a Father Henry!"

I have ended up with a history that goes back potentially millions of years but all but the last 2000 years is written as lore. In places i only have a paragraph or two giving a broad putline of tens or hundreds of thousands of years and where things happen that matter i created more lore for those events but not an actual timeline of events because everything over 2000 years ago is ultimately legend and mythology to all of my characters. And most of my characters don't even know the lore that i know.

@@nagillim7915 That's both impressive and concerning. 😅 Do you find a benefit to having such an extensive history?

@@DamienZshadow - when the story is dealing with immortal faeries and ancient vampire liches that were once elves the backstory can be a bit on the long side. 😅
Everything prior to 500,000 ywars ago only takes up about 2 a4 pages of wide ruled text. Then from 500,000 to 15,000 it's maybe 5 or 6 pages on the same paper. Then 15,000 to 2000 is probably about 5 pagea.
It's literally just.bare bones. Which is all i need. It's only in the last 2000 years where i even bothered giving rough dates of when events happened (and from 2000 to 1250 years ago it's pretty much anarchy and lots of tribal.cultures moving around and displacing one another as they try to survive when civilisation.has been completely destroyed: imagine the Roman Empire fell and didn't leave a Constantinople to carry its torch in the east or a Catholic church to remember its language and history in the west). The church in my world only rises after the collapse and it doesn't even remember who the real gods are or the real lore of the world.

@@nagillim7915 Sounds entirely reasonable with that context! I will admit to having stories that run thousands of years in my world. I do have a story for the beginning of time and the ion's that passed since then , but they also take up no more than a few pages because they are more generalizations.

Really liked this. especially the True North. And as for borrowing from world History, apply a Rule of Three - change 3 things about what you borrow from the real world. And also, look up histories of lesser known regions - eg the history of the Congo would make a wonderful history for a fantasy. Or the history of west africa after the fall of the last great empire there.

Africa's history has the added benefit that most readers don't know it, so it feels far more fresh than Europe's history, which many readers know very well given how often it is used as a basis for fantasy novels :)

Your channel always helps me out with some struggles, and right now it was no different. I was finding it quite hard to try and write the entire history of my world, but now I can take some of my stories and use them to guide me in creating my world, knowing what I need and what isn't necessary. Thank you! :D

So of course when you said that the wheel separates the regular world from the magical dimension my immediate thought was what if it connected them instead. What if it's a relic of scifi quantum technology and is in fact what has brought the physical and magical worlds close enough together that we can tap into magic with our brains... bodies spirits whatever. Part of this is just me being a contrary person, but part of this is that I always enjoy when the characters in a setting misunderstand things to the point where their beliefs are not only incorrect, but are actually diametrically opposed to their realities.

Well, my characters definitely misunderstand a lot about their world 🫣😂

Hello, estoy trabajando en una historia que tendrá aliens y magia y me preguntaba si podía poner personajes de dominio publico (cómo el rey Arturo) relacionados con organizaciones que existieron (cómo los templarios).
