  • Konami's Gungage isn't a great third person shooter but its world and characters have a ton of potential. Ultimately, it fails to meet that. But man, it has a ton of style.

Man you're totally right about the aesthetics being awesome both visuals and audio. Definitely adding the soundtrack to my music rotations.

If you play it long enough, you found that Steyr is the most well-realized in term of the control. Her control, speed and jump were top-notch with ease of control and being a lightweight. She has the best mobility, she could even dash forward by tapping the direction twice, can duck and you didn't even scratch the surface of her weapons. Laser is actually more useful than you realized. It helps her to pick up items w/o touching it, can detect bullshit enemies placement (even though she got a radar like Dee.) Mirror, aside from being a defense barrier, can even reflect laser bullets and Nova is just screen nuke.

Steyr is probably my favorite cause she is so mobile. All of her dashes are really fun to work with.
Though given the game's length, there definitetly wasn't the time to fully apperciate her character on a single playthrough.
I've considered trying hard mode though.

the characters from this game are so cool, all of them deserves to be better known and to have more fan art.

It is really stylish! I'd also recommend looking into a game called Industrial Spy: Operation Espionage. The characters in that game are a bit more normal, but I think they have a similar aura.

The reason why there isn't any English in the instructions is because sometimes with some PAL European games, they were distributed into two sub-markets - Northern European releases would have packaging/manuals in English and various Scandinavian languages, whilst mainland European releases would have the packaging/manuals in all the other languages (Spanish, German, French, Italian, etc.). The games inside were exactly the same, regardless of the language of the packaging/manual. Sounds like your version is the latter release.

Holy shit, that texture wrapping!!! 3:10
It should've just played like Doom.

    • @OneControllerPort
      @OneControllerPort  5 років тому

PlayStation games definitely do some weird stuff with their textures lol. I think I've gotten used to it and I barely notice it nowadays.
I think there are some emulator plug-ins that attempt to reduce this though, which is neat.

Nice fair review, I didn't play this until this year, it's definitely not perfect and takes some getting used to and I didn't mind the slow turning much, however I didn't have that high of expectations that it would play smoothly to begin with, the game is at its worst when platforming is introduced, I died a ton there.
I still really like it, it's a nice 90s time capsule of a game and I thought the way characters were unlocked was unexpected and kind of cool, being so short makes it easy to go back to and there's a bit of extra content with the hidden collectible that unlocks some minor extras, still this definitely would have been a rental game back in the day, not something people held onto because of how short it is.
I only appreciate it more now because I don't always have free time to play full games. Style over substance is accurate and in this case I'm ok with it.

      Thanks for watching!
Yeah, I think we feel pretty similarly about it. I definitely feel you on the time aspect. Even 10-20 hours in a game feels like an investment these days.
I'm all for short games, but I think where I start to criticize it is if it feels like the game concept or world feel underutilized because of the length. If the characters had unique stages, I think I'd feel a lot more comfortable with the length.
But yeah, over a weekend and for a $5-$10 rental fee, it probably was pretty good! Even today I think it's worth checking out if someone likes the look/feel of the world.

NOTE:Turning is NOT hard. You need to combine L1 and R1 with that slow rotation of left and right and you can do basicly everything you want. Controls are good. Also each 4 character has some weaknesses like dee and kard dashing hard or jumping slow(bit having big fire power)

Man, this would have been so much better with twin stick controls and faster movement. I struggled with- er, played it on my Playstation Classic, and its moments of brilliance were dampened by that crappy control. And the fact that a giant moth killed me with fairy dust.

@@OneControllerPort The point with that game is, you need to understand it.
It's not your classic shooter and doesn't require much skill to beat, plus is really short (around 3.30-4h).
When you realize that you're on a semi-open autotarget railshooter of pure "gonna smash this square button till the world collapse", it becomes extremely fun.
PS: if you use your special ability on a boss that has low health (like 5-10%) you'll trigger an execution cutscene, for the time they were extremely fun ;)
