I’m so glad you shared this! I went to Iceland last year and met so many cool people at the local geothermal pool! I was one of the few tourists and it was almost like a spa. I made a playlist of my ICELAND travels and the bathhouse is shown there! You make the best Iceland videos and inspired me to go!
Oh yeah - my uncles are twin brothers and the one on the right was a pioneer of infant swimming in Iceland in 1990. A documentary was made about him in 2019, Dive: rituals in water, and apparently it's displayed in the exhibit :) My grandmother sitting between them lived until she was 93, but never learned to swim.
The first time I visited Iceland, I went to a public pool, and absolutely loved it! A lot cheaper than the Blue Lagoon (which I also visited), but actually just as nice IMO. (And, as always, this video makes me want to go back to Iceland!)
I love the pools SO much. Vesturbaejarlaug is always first and last stop in Reykjavik. Love the pools everywhere TBH. In Westfjords they have small coffees to drink in the pool.
Some pools in Canada also prefer people rinse in the shower beforehand.... I don't always actually do that.... but I don't think everyone else does either. But if I ever go to one in Iceland I'll make sure to do it. The towel thing is interesting, though! Are these pools open year round? Even in the summer, I usually feel cold when I get out of a pool and am always rushing (without running, of course) to get my towel around me.
Icelander here: The pools are certainly open year round! Some areas of Iceland (extreme east and west) do not have the abundance of hot springs that the south-west/north-east does, so they tend to have indoor pools/tubs, but generally you can enjoy any Icelandic hot tub even in a howling blizzard! The main difference between a really cold, windy day and a balmy summer day is that you need to dunk your head into the hot water frequently to keep it warm. You body stays toasty hot throughout! On a cool day you tend to descend quickly into the nearest hot tub, but you will return to the shower/changing rooms at a leisurely rate because you are warm to the bone. The cold is actually refreshing! I know of at least one township pool where you do not have to worry about his; Akureyri. You can enter the hot water indoors and leisurely make your way to the outdoor pool (and vice versa).
Two part question: I flew to Japan for a very extended geo thermal experience, very expensive I might add, didn't realize till I got there tattoo's are frown upon and was declined entrance to almost ever location because of this. Does Iceland have any strange customs or rules one should think about before planning a geo thermal trip? Second, are most venues handicapped accessible? I have a friend who walks with a cain I like to travel with.
When I was a kid the pools made you shower before getting in the swimming pool. If you didn't come out of the locker room wet you had to go back in and get in the shower. The water was cold too.
Great video. When I was there I hit 4 lagoons/hot springs. My favourite was the secret lagoon and least favourite was surprisingly the blue lagoon. It's all a matter of personal taste I guess.
And start with the lowest temperature hot tub, unlike us who went for the middle one initially until we realised the elderly local gent was saying “easy, easy” because our bodies had no acclimated and we needed to pace ourselves. We looked silly tippee toeing out of there like we’d stepped on hot coal 🤣
Love this! I tell people I go to Iceland for the swimming and they look at me like I am nuts. But it is so wonderful.
Even before watching this I am ecstatic at seeing the Blue Lagoon which is one of the best places I have ever been in my life.
Lol ok. Well, you’ll learn an interesting fact about how the Blue Lagoon got started.
@@AllThingsIceland that was awesome. I also haven't been swimming in many years and I an envious of how central swimming now is in the country.
Everytime...I wash before getting into a pool or hot tub everytime! Common courtesy! Love the concept of strengthening community.
🥳🥳

Me too! Yes, it’s a lovely touch when you get served beverages in pools in smaller towns, like the Westfjords.

That's the pool we visited with our kids! Water slides + hot pools is the perfect combination. Awesome video!
Yay!! Thank you 🤗
Really interesting video, I never knew about the exhibit so will pay a visit when I'm next in the capital!

Hi and thank you. Yes, I feel so fortunate to live here. 🤗
Love this and live for your content fam
Thank you 🤗❤️
Love the pools
I read that Icelandic swimming pools are open year round! Because of the geothermal heat!

Thank you. Nice! Yes, it’s definitely a matter of taste and it’s awesome that there is so much variety to choose from here. 😊
Thanks!
You know your channel is HOT , when it has a million commercials!😁
😂😂😂 Is it playing that many? I just have it on automatic. 😅
@@AllThingsIceland A few do. Especially the one about seasonal depression...
I will hopefully be at the sky lagoon in July but have been to the local pool by hilsgrimkirkja
Ok, awesome. The Sky Lagoon is so lovely. I hope you have a great time.

😂😂😂 good point
All things iceland, have you tried the waterslides in the iceland swimming pools
Yes!! It’s so much fun and quite fast. 😊
Is that Bláa lónið ( in the beginning(not the seimming pool) or?( bc im Icelandic BUT I DONT REMEMBER THE NAME)
It’s Bláa Lónið and then the Sky Lagoon before the introduction at Laugardalslaug.
@@AllThingsIceland Ty i forgot what it was called :)
For water safety Would it be side stroke or breast stroke? Did lifesaving class back in the 80’s
Thanks for guessing. In Iceland, the breaststroke and the backstroke are the two strokes that are focused on during swim lessons.
Thank You Iceland Norway and Denmark, offering immediate help should need be on our road into NATO membership for us Swedes.
I'd have failed a swim class, I finally can just float without sinking. Actual swimming for less than a minute xD.
I think they give the kids floating devices to help them at first. Not sure if you have tried that yet but it’s a great place to start.
@@AllThingsIceland I was of the "got thrown in and see what happens" group so I took forever learning how to not sink. I can sink on purpose now 😃.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🥰🥰
Glad you enjoyed it. 🤗❤️
Was it a saltwater pool smell?
It was a mix of chlorine and something else. It was really strong. 😅
@@AllThingsIceland Ah, then I know what that's like even though I haven't swam much in 15ish years 😅.
2 strokes: I would think Freestyle and Breast Stroke.
Great guess. It’s breaststroke and backstroke. I don’t know if much emphasis is put on freestyle. It’s my favorite stroke.
I don't want confusion
It's good
I want to you Canada 🇨🇦
Tankyou
Free Style and Breast Stroke.
Great guess. It’s breast stroke and back stroke.
