5:42 a goal through the middle is worth 6 points but a point or a behind is only worth 1. Because the defender intercepted the ball after it was kicked, known as a smother, it was "touched off the boot" which nullifies what would have been a goal, into a behind

In that first one the player could've taken the set shot for goal because he had "marked" (caught on the full) the ball but he decided to "play on" and run with it. This is a player's choice when they mark it and can be tactically advantageous, however the second he plays on, he can be tackled. It backfired, he was tackled, and penalised by the umpire for "holding the ball". The opposing player who made the tackle pushed him in a way which says "serves you right, loser!"

That's why AFL players make it look easy.

Hi Ryan, in the first one, the North Melbourne player has a mark or free kick, so can take his time and kick over the mark (the place where the opponent is standing). Instead, he chose to play on, which is kind of understandable, since he is a small, agile player and the guy on the mark is Mason Cox, a "lanky Yankee" - he is 6' 11" and not the most agile, so it should have been pretty easy to get around him and play on. However, he stuffed it up and got tackled which means he is caught holding the ball and Mason Cox would have got the free kick. The push afterwards is just to rub it in and humiliate him a bit more. That would be pretty much expected. By the way, you may have noticed that there was hardly anyone at the ground. I can tell from the seating that this is the Gabba in Brisbane, so not the home for either of these teams. This must have been played during the pandemic, when there was a lockdown in Melbourne and many games were moved interstate. The Grand Final was played in Brisbane in 2020, the first time it had been played outside Melbourne, and Perth in 2021.
"Tasmanian" doesn't mean that they are from Tasmania. The team (brown and gold stripes) is Hawthorn, which is a suburb in Melbourne. They mainly play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, their major sponsor is the Tasmianian government and therefore they play 4 or 5 games a year in Launceston, northern Tasmania, and the "Tasmanian" on the jumper (not a "jersey") is a sponsorship logo. It has just been decided that Tasmania will have their own team, who will likely be called the Tasmania Devils, who will begin playing in 2027, if I remember correctly.
It was so nice to see Stevie Johnson (the guy in the blue and white horizontal stripes) showing off and getting run down in the goal square. He was a big head.
Yep, stands empty during COVID. Here in Melbourne, we had the longest lockdown in the world.
Yes, you can push people away (known as a "don't argue"), as long as you don't contact them high (above the shoulders) or in the back. Dustin Martin, shown in the clip, is the master of this technique. And yes, you can to practically anything to your opponent as long as you take the mask or make a "genuine attempt" to do so.
The next one was a great spoil right on the goal line. The guy chasing just got there in time an touched the ball after it had been kicked. A goal has to be kicked between the goalposts (the two tall posts) without being touched either by an opponent ent or a team mate. Therefore, in this case, it was a behind (worth 1 point, rather than a goal, worth 6 points) and was signalled as such by the umpire (they use two hands to signal a goal and one to signal a point. They also follow this up by waving two flags for a goal and one flag for a behind).
They train to take "speckies/screamers", so they know to roll over as they hit the ground after taking a mark to minimise the risk of injury.
Wardrobe malfunctions - yes they do happen sometimes. Usually just the underpants are revealed but there was one the other day that exposed someones bare cheeks.
If you enjoy AFL so much, Ryan, maybe you could do some live reactions to some games?

Understandable seeing aboriginals had no written language and everything was passed down in story mode. But they must have some amazing skills, telling the stories exactly as they were told for how ever long they were here for. They cant decide, was it 10,000 or was it 20,000 40,000? Now its up to 50,000 yrs they lived in australia for.
My cousins in W.A are land developers, and the only hurdle the face every single time they want to build on land they purchased, they need an aborignal to survey the land to make sure it is not spiritually significant to the aboriginals. They even found an arrow head conveniently just laying on the ground, and it was said it was proof aboriginals were here upto 50,000 yrs ago. My cousin said they just want to be paid and they bugger off happy as larry and leave without any more communication.... until the next time. What a shity scam backed by the state government.
First time I ever heard aboriginals using bow and arrows. Even if it is true, it shows aborignal history have lost technology and have gone back in their weapons technology, and some how forgot to add that in the stories being told to each generation. 50,000 yrs and all you have to show for it is a stick that returns to you, and a hollowed out piece of wood that makes sounds. Live in huts wearing loin cloths, except tassie aboriginals that used possum fur.
I still admire their foot skills. Dont realy know the rugby players by name. I never knew aborignals went to the dark side to play rugby.

    Hi Ryan,
The 2 taller middle posts = goal posts
The 2 outer shorter posts = behind posts
Goals are scored by kicking the ball through the 2 goal posts. The ball must not be touched in any way by another player, and though it may touch the ground, it must not touch the post. A goal is worth 6 points.
If a ball goes through the goal posts, after touching any player on the ground, or is propelled through by hand rather than foot, a behind is awarded, which is worth 1 point.
If the ball hits the goal post, or goes between the goal post and the behind post, then a behind is awarded (1 point).
No points are awarded for hitting the behind posts and the ball will be ruled out of bounds.
If the ball hits a behind post without bouncing it is deemed "out on the full" and the opposing team takes a free kick from next to the behind post.
You can also earn one point for running the ball across the opposing team's goal line.

If you have to think about options 2 & 3 then clearly you knew the angel was to difficult to put the ball through the sticks (Goal posts). The mark (catch) of the ball was awarded by the umpire, the player held it long enough for the "Mark" to be awarded and the player who did the pushing was just pissed that that was the case. It was not out of play.

When the goal umpire puts two arms down with the pointed fingers it's a goal 6 points.
When they only put one arm down with the pointed finger it's a behind 1 point. If the ball is touched and goes into the two middle posts that's only worth 1 point "a behind".
If they kick and misses the two middle posts and goes between the the other two on the outside it's a behind 1 point.
If they miss all together and ball gets kecked outside of the field line on the full it's a free kick to the other team. If the ball is bounced over the line or tapped out or touched in anyway then its a throw in from the field umpire. They do this by standing on the sideline where it went out and throw it over their head backwards as far as they can. This way any player can then go for the ball once thrown in.

2:16 Is the West Coast Eagles (blue and yellow) against the Hawthorn Hawks (brown and gold). Hawthorn is in Melbourne, Victoria, not Tasmania. The Hawks have an association with Tasmania, and there was talk of moving the Hawks down to Tasmania permanently, but instead the AFL have recently announced that Tasmania has recieved the 19th AFL licence, meaning they will get a brand new team.
Also, by touching the ball, the defender has basically robbed the Eagles' player of the goal. A ball that is touched before it goes in goal is only worth 1 point, as opposed to 6 for the goal. It's the same at 5:30 where the single finger point by the goal umpire indicates a point. A two handed signal is for a goal, and is why the umpires do that gesture, to indicate what has been scored.

Hey Ryan, it's not a dribble, it's called a bounce. Due to the shape of the footy it takes skill to bounce it back to yourself and for it not to bounce away.
The rules of football state that a player running on the field with the ball must take a running bounce at least once every 15 metres.
When a player handballs to another player, they must hold the ball in the palm of one hand and strike with the clenched fist of their other hand. The ball cannot be struck with an open hand nor may it be thrown in the air and hit with a fist. Throwing the ball is also illegal.

"so why did he push him"(0:45)...........because he can. simples. It's Aussie Rules Football Ryan, if you get caught with the ball (and you had prior opportunity to offload) it's a free kick to your opponent. Mason Cox just gave him a little push afterwards to let him know about it. Just to illustrate the point. Mason Cox is American you know (did you know that ?) we had to teach him the game and then he took to it with gusto.

He played on with the free kick to try and create a better angle for the kick to goal and got caught tackled because he played on. If you try and do this the person on the mark can then go for the player who has the ball.
The player who tackled him caught him with the ball and he didn't realise it so there for the player tackling get a free kick.
Then player pushed him for two reasons. One to push him back to where the penalty "free kick" is and the other to say you fuck'd up. 😜

The umpire indicates- A Behind (1 point) with 1 hand and pointed finger.
A GOAL (6points) Is indicated with both hands, pointing with pointer finger).

A goal must come from an offence player's kick. If it's intercepted by the smallest touch off any player's finger, it isn't a goal, but a behind and only worth 1 point. This wasn't shown, and rarely happens, but if the ball goes past the the goal line off a defender's boot, its still a behind. There are no "own goals" like soccer.

Hawthorn is not Tasmanian ,they play four home games in Tasmania a season in part of a deal. Tasmania will have a new 700 million dollar stadium (with a roof) by 2029 ,and its own AFL Tasmanian team by 2028. The first 250 million for the new stadium in Hobart, was announced by the Prime Minster of Australia in Hobart a couple of days before the 2023 budget. The new 19th AFL team will most likely be called the (Tassie devils)

The first one, he played on which meant that he could be tackled. Which he was, by Mason Cox (in the black and white), who is the only American in the game. It is embarrassing because he is so tall and typically rather slow. The push is what we might call the American arrogance coming out (sorry). He gets lippy but hasn't always had the skills to go with it.
"Touched off the boot" literally means that, someone touched it after it left the boot. To count as a goal it has to come off the attackers foot last. If it is touched by thing other than that, including the post, it only counts as a behind.

Good to see the female goal umpire. A lot of Ozzie women have been just as crazy about sport as men for a long time, especially about the big games. But it took a disgracefully long time for money for professional women's AFL and cricket leagues to be put together. Sports journalists was a boy's club for decades too, even though women had been medalling in Olympics, swimming, Netball, Gymnastics, Hockey etc for a century before they were let near the microphones.
