    that Nausicaä release is spectacular! I'm not quite done with book 2 yet, but a deep-dive from you would be appreciated. Your reviews are always deep, thoughtful examinations of the story. If you can track down issue one of the initial Viz release, it comes with a Nausicaä poster by Moebius!

    The Moomin phenomena has become a beast of it's own at least here in Sweden and Finland and probably other places too with the Moomin mugs. Every female in my family, mom, sister, aunts, great aunts and whatever's still alive is collecting them and some of them are expensive as hell!
    I haven't read the comics, but I grew up watching the tv series here in Sweden.

      That's what I'm finding out! Wow, it sounds like quite a craze, but i can completely see why! They're not only extremely cute, but each of the characters has such a distinct and lovable personality, flaws and all!

    I loved this format! Nausicaä is one of my all-time favorite comics/animated movies, and I only knew Moomin by name before watching this video. This format could be a great method for recommending comics that people like me might not have heard of or know much about

    As a Finn it is my obligation to stress the fact that Moomin is a Finnish comic book - despite the fact that Tove wrote in swedish. Swedish is the second official language here in Finland. Moomin is by far the biggest thing in comics from Finland so I feel a bit protective about its origins.😄
    Another lesser known fact is that Tove did a half year run of Moomin comics to Ny Tid newspaper(Finnish newspaper in swedish language) in 1947. Style was quite different and there was no speech bubbles(Prince Valiant-style) as was common back then. Only worth reading if you are a die hard fan though. The Evening News strips(started in 1954) that made Moomin famous(the ones in your Deluxe edition) were originally published first in english. Tove did write them in swedish and then her brother Lars translated them to english for the print.
    I´m not an expert on Moomin but of course I have been exposed to it since childhood. Standing here in the epicenter of Moomin it is easy to forget how massive and lasting impact it has made world wide. A video like this is great(and maybe needed) reminder.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 роки тому +2

      Haha oh yes, absolutely a Finnish comic. I did only mention language here, not nationality (I think i even said Japanese, not Japan) because I only wanted to make a point about the translated nature of the work I've enjoyed.
      I didn't actually realise what a merchandising phenomenon it was, in that way closer to Superman or Mickey Mouse that it actually may outstrip the 'actual' stories!

    • @analogcomics

      @@ftloc It´s just a thing Finns do with Moomin. If you don´t say it Finnish we have to😅
      Tove and Lars founded Moomin Characters company in 1958 without any knowledge of business. Fun fact: Jansson family was all artists and kind of anti-business and capitalism. And it turned out their company became one of the most profitable in this country.🙃It´s basically a licensing company so they don´t manufacture the mugs etc themselves.

    You always set the high bar for excellence in reviews I have Nausicca boxed set haven’t read it yet bought it in 2021 but the market forces and artistic recognition and universal love for his artistry make it rare and getting more and more expensive .My Hero Totoro is
    a revelation the Buddhist mantra that all life is human suffering and sickness affects us all is blended with a seemingly effortless joy and admiration for the biosphere and Mother Nature. Thank god for him Disney ruins everything in the world it’s pathetic and embarrassing but Miyazaki is simply incomparable and a force all his own- PURE GENUIS at the summit of human accomplishment I won’t even disparage his legacy by polluting the conversation with Disney comparisons !!!! 🌎🍄🐥🌊👑🦉👑

    Brilliantly unexpected comparison!
    My british relatives tried to push Moomin books on me for years...I had no idea they were originally comics for a decade or two. I only really got into it when I did come across the small collections that have come out recently. What I've read seems to be a daily comic strip...and it works extremely well in that format.
    Now I hang my head down in shame that I've never read Nausicca...
    I'd love to hear some more of your thoughts on the Moomin comics...

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  2 роки тому +1

      The strip format is great for the slightly episodic nature (not to mention the dreamlike barelling from one situation to another) of these stories! I confess I had my doubts - a cutesy merch empire character from the fifties could so easily have been just not my cup of tea. But i found it sad and wise and quite clear eyed (while staying warm) about people, which gives it a certain timelessness.
      I should probably go through each story again to see if that impression holds up!

    Wow! Definitely need to get Nausicaa . I have a thing for pure ink and halftone art, and most of my collection contains black and white prints of comics. There is something about a black and white inked comic page that is just organic and beautiful. I heard that Miyazaki was already well established into animation by the time he drew the Nausicaa Manga and it shows in his beautiful art.
    Would you rather prefer a coloured comic book or a black and white one?

      Since you seem pressed for time, the Moomin volume contains twenty-odd stories, and it should take maybe 30 minutes to read one. So that would definitely be one you could get full stories from in short bursts, unlike the more epic Nausicaa. Hope that helps!

    As a child I used to own a cassette tape with one of the moomin stories. ( or Mummi trollet as it's known in Norway) and I listened to it almost every night, but yea the TV series is probably what most people know it for, and some of the absolute haunting character designs. The Valley of the wind is very well regarded by fans(Princess mononoke being another favourite of mine) but I believe the movie didn't get the best start as it got butchered by some studio I forget which.
