At its best Polish cinema is very good indeed. This is probably the finest film ever made about the process of industrialisation based on a novel by Wladyslaw Reymount it benefitted greatly from authentic Łódź locations. I recommend a visit to the city especially the textile and film museums much of the fabric of the industrial city still exists, I was lucky enough to see an excellent ballet based on the film staged at the Teatr Wielki in Łódź. Incredibly moving to see it a very appreciative audience I think I was the only one there who wasn’t Polish! Looking forward to returning to Poland when this wretched pandemic is over.
