First, Tyler, I’d like to say that I love your music you play in the background. I’ve been meaning to say that since the beginning of watching your videos along time ago!! Second, I’d like to say that having grown up on a farm myself, I think many people, can I fill a rope around a cow or cash the first time successfully and I just don’t think you should be hard on yourself for missing a couple of time. You’re too mean variable games lol and trying to roll the cat especially a new one mama. We had a lot of baby calves, as did my grandpa and well it is very time consuming, It’s a matter of fact in life. I thought you did an excellent job, coconut calf, considering how much the herd was moving about and getting in your way as well is the frightened little calf! I’m very glad you were able to calf and get him to eat the majority of the Bottle❣️❣️❣️ having that Shute made a Huge in eating him to know what that bottle is about and get a taste of that milk without the big fight!! I really hope he makes it because it really is hard to lose a calf after you put so much effort into saving its life. Unfortunately, that’s just part of raising cattle or any animals but I especially hate to lose a little calf. My grandpa was so sensitive to us when it came to little calves, and the ones that we were bottlefeeding, and from week to week when we go down to help him, we ask where are calf was that we’ve been bottlefeeding and he always said well I took it to the auction which wasn’t the truth. I didn’t figure that out for years. They had died, but he didn’t want us to cry or feel bad. My father was the same way. one Fourth of July we are going to visit the other side of grandparents and when we came home, they were four jersey calves pinned up down below the house and near the barn. My father informs is it each of us. We’re going to take care of a calf and we would work in teams so, we were told to water it did it by today and it was really hot, make sure we give it extra water. We had to take it out of the pan and exercise it and so forth. He did not tell us what the plan was for these fore calves… no, I love good spareribs and beef, and it didn’t matter to me if they butchered my calf because I’d rather have any of that beef then pancakes lol. Imagine listening to a daughter, cry and cry and cry and cry some more when she found out that it was going to kill her calf. She was 10 years old lol I’m still laughing about this, but she will need her cat and my dad one night, put his hands down on the table and he was not given to a temper or anger or anything. He never spanked us, but he put his hands on the table and stood up with his scooted, his chair back, & said, “ that is it! I am never ever going to buy another calf for you kids if I have to put up with this kind of crying. We need me on this phone for all of you in the winter time in the summertime, but crying like this is ridiculous. I did not know that doing something nice for our family could turn into nothing but a big bawling match. If you need to cry you go upstairs to your room and do it privately because I’m not gonna work all day and come home to this kind of nonsense. I love my family and I did something nice for you guys and the crying had better stop tonight.!! “To which he got up and went outside. !! my mother told my sister who was still crying to get upstairs and dry her eyes and not come back and let my father see her ever again crying over this issue. And she didn’t care if she didn’t eat another meal because we were going to eat that meat, and she was too, or she could not come to the table. I thought it’s OK with me because that’s more for me but I didn’t dare say it. Now that I’m older, I have so much understanding for her. Loving some thing as much as you do such as a pet, it’s not easy to have it destroyed no matter how old you are , to have it destroyed but, I did not like to be hungry, and I sure didn’t like my mothers pancakes, so it was important to me to have that beef on the table. My mother made the best spareribs in the world, and after she passed away, we could not find her recipe anywhere. Several sisters have tried to make it and we’ve gotten close, but let’s please it’s gotten. I miss those spareribs, anyway! Forgive me for getting off the beaten path. I didn’t think your roping skills are that bad! Haha! For catching calves, we’ve found electric poultry (not energized) handy. We just set it up as a little pen, and drive them into it. It usually works! Thanks for sharing!

Hey Tyler you know a lot more than I do about cattle ranching. But I did work with my bro in law in NC with his cows and we had this problem too. Sometimes we would catch the calf and the momma and put them in a stall together for a week or so to see if they would bond. Sometimes it would work. Sometimes it didn't. We had to cull the momma Sometimes. Not trying to persuade you in any way. Just a memory that this brought back to me. Good luck in whatever it comes to. Love your videos but haven't been on here much lately. Glad to see you ranching keep it going.
Glad you noticed the little feller was a loner and mom was ignoring him. Bet that bottle of milk was tasty to him once he got it all downed. And hopefully tomorrow morning he doesn't hesitate to drain the bottle. Sure do hope his mom will be crying for her baby. BTW, I just realized I haven't seen Hank in a while. Is he still with the cows or in another pasture? Hope all goes will for the calf. I felt so sorry for him when his mom just walked off and left the him standing there. I thought he looked very weak for a baby calf in a herd. Poor baby was starving. You are a good guy. Thanks for caring for the little thing. Mama went off her baby because that big bull is in the herd. Maybe if they had been away she would had stuck with the baby.
I am a dairy farmer on the east coast. We ha e calves born in the pasture quite often and chasing them down is a pain in the ass. Going to have to learn how to throw a rope for sure. Great video Tyler
I absolutely loved this video ! You have a wonderful sense of humor, Farmer Tyler. I believe Sadie actually helped keep the calf calm...I saw how she was looking at him. The calf did well for a 1st time bottle-feeding--he was thirsty. I certainly hope the Mama cow will be bawling for him in the A.M. but I kind of think she might not. She seems like she didn't really bond to him after he was born. I'm looking forward to all your videos coming up---They are keeping so many good memories alive when I grew up on our farm. Forget about rejoining calf and mom, first time moms do this, not their fault they just don't know. Not your fault either Tyler. We pen our first time moms with the calf for two days so that they bond, then let out to their own pasture of about 50 acres (to keep an eye on them) before being let too rejoin the main herd.

Sadie handled that in stellar fashion, although I am afraid what she thought of it was written on her face! She's doing good! Glad to see you could rope him - thought that was a lost art! And yes it was very pretty - just not as fast as if you did that daily! I don't know if its too late to reconnect that heifer with her calf - but since others who know lots more than i do say its worth I try - i'll just say I hope it works!
We've had some first time moms like that and yes what we had to do is corral the mom and calf together for about a week. Even put her in headgate three times a day cause mom didn't know to feed it. After about a week things were much better
First year heifers can be a challenge. I’ve been there myself. I would try to pen the mom and calf together in the corral. Great video. Sorry you have to deal with that.
I've had good luck doing this. I have even gone as far as putting mother in squeeze chute and opening side door and putting calf on teat. Milk her down. Then I usually take a rag and wipe all over mother in flank/ udder/ head area and wipe that scent all over the calf. Then vise versa. It usually takes 2 or 3 times in the chute for the mother bag to be comfortable and get used to that calf nursing. I also leave them penned up together for a week or so until I think all is good.
Poor wee soul. Looks like you've got another little 'Buddy'. How big/little a problem is it for Mothers not bonding and not bothering with their calves ? Will you put her to the Bull again or sell her ? 🚜🌹🌹🚜
Check her and make sure she is dropping milk and she doesn't have a plugged or defective nipple. Pen them up together; you can hobble her to keep her from walking away while the calf feeds.
Hi Tyler,you know if I’m writing that will be more less from Experience,in the past we had something like your case. If something is wrong with the calf and is not follow the mother after She is calling the calf,eventualy She will give up and refuse the calf for good. Sometimes that can happend in first day or week,sometimes even after a month. No explenation,She felt that the calf is not good anymore and She leave him. Sometimes they are even more agresive and protective,it is a mother instinct anyway. If She nurse him for a month She is ok Like a mother,that is for shure.
A trick my dad taught me was after roping a cow or calf leave the lasso around the neck and make a loop over the bridge of their nose. The loop will put a little pressure on the bridge of their nose and you can lead them easier that way.
Howdy! from north Texas. Try penning the heifer and her calf together. I have found this to work with first calf heifers. If she doesn't get with the program say in a week of so, you can put her back with the herd and you'll have Buddy II to deal with. If she gets bred back, there's a good chance she straighten out next calf. Good luck!
I have a small calf that lost his mother and he’s been stealing milk and doing just fine. Haha so sometimes there’s just a will to live or not, it seems with cows
Congrats on bottle calf #2 :P I know you really try to do grass fed only. But calves that small require a higher nutritional plane than summer grass alone can provide. They'd struggle even on young, lush, fertilized winter annuals. Their rumens aren't developed. If you supplemented them with some of of your pig feed they'd do sooo much better. Buddy, too. Just bucket feed them like 1.5% of bodyweight, 50/50 mix of energy/protein. Might google specifics. They'll come to you like puppies.
At the 3:14 to the 3:40 time mark; why did the big bull get between this calf & it's mama? Why would the breeding bull not "mind" the other calfs w/their mama's but chases off that calf? Also i thought the ranching industry was all gone in CA; i'm the 7th generation out of sacramento (of my family and. the my grandbabies or the last) & i remember when there were ranches from rio linda out toward baseline rd and over to; antelope that was pretty much in the 60's & 70's. then down to 1 big ranch that went from watt & antelope road to watt just before the mcclellan afb's officers housing then do east all the way westside of don julio & antelope all the way north-east to don julio & elverta; i dont remember the name of that ranch but as the rancher got older plots of his land was sold off from late 70's to the early 90's and then from 1995 to about 2005 all that was left of that ranch was from welegra & antelope to welegra & elverta east to elverta & don julio then south on don julio to antelope; then when the rancher had died the famliy sold off the rest of that big chuck of land back to sacramento county. MAN HOW TIME FLIES and not all of it was fun😮😬😱😨😵😲😱😨😬😮😌

You might consider making a small calf trailer to hook to your side by side to transport small calves in made of cattle panels or similar materials

Boy, a good cow horse would come in handy! However, not bad roping for a guy who gets almost no practice.

Check her and make sure she is dropping milk and she doesn't have a plugged or defective nipple. Pen them up together; you can hobble her to keep her from walking away while the calf feeds.
Hi Tyler,you know if I’m writing that will be more less from Experience,in the past we had something like your case.
If something is wrong with the calf and is not follow the mother after She is calling the calf,eventualy She will give up and refuse the calf for good.
Sometimes that can happend in first day or week,sometimes even after a month.
No explenation,She felt that the calf is not good anymore and She leave him. Sometimes they are even more agresive and protective,it is a mother instinct anyway. If She nurse him for a month She is ok Like a mother,that is for shure.
A trick my dad taught me was after roping a cow or calf leave the lasso around the neck and make a loop over the bridge of their nose. The loop will put a little pressure on the bridge of their nose and you can lead them easier that way.
In Australia farmers have kelpies, border collies and blue healers.

Howdy! from north Texas. Try penning the heifer and her calf together. I have found this to work with first calf heifers. If she doesn't get with the program say in a week of so, you can put her back with the herd and you'll have Buddy II to deal with. If she gets bred back, there's a good chance she straighten out next calf. Good luck!

Iv seen calf catcher mounted to quads and sidexsides. Wouldn't be bad if your alone. Then put them into a livestock trailer. Just my 2 cents.

I know you really try to do grass fed only. But calves that small require a higher nutritional plane than summer grass alone can provide. They'd struggle even on young, lush, fertilized winter annuals. Their rumens aren't developed. If you supplemented them with some of of your pig feed they'd do sooo much better. Buddy, too. Just bucket feed them like 1.5% of bodyweight, 50/50 mix of energy/protein. Might google specifics. They'll come to you like puppies.

At the 3:14 to the 3:40 time mark; why did the big bull get between this calf & it's mama? Why would the breeding bull not "mind" the other calfs w/their mama's but chases off that calf?
Also i thought the ranching industry was all gone in CA; i'm the 7th generation out of sacramento (of my family and. the my grandbabies or the last) & i remember when there were ranches from rio linda out toward baseline rd and over to; antelope that was pretty much in the 60's & 70's. then down to 1 big ranch that went from watt & antelope road to watt just before the mcclellan afb's officers housing then do east all the way westside of don julio & antelope all the way north-east to don julio & elverta; i dont remember the name of that ranch but as the rancher got older plots of his land was sold off from late 70's to the early 90's and then from 1995 to about 2005 all that was left of that ranch was from welegra & antelope to welegra & elverta east to elverta & don julio then south on don julio to antelope; then when the rancher had died the famliy sold off the rest of that big chuck of land back to sacramento county.
