- Graeme O'Neil takes a look at how Whoopi Goldberg, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Chris Rock reacted to being part of a private audience with the Pope to recognize the importance of comedy in society.
Stephen Colbert was almost in tears. He and Jim Gaffigan are both catholics.

I know I’m older now, that does not bother “me”, “I” KNOW FOR A FACT, that soon, very soon I will be in Heaven, FOREVER young.

I think that anytime you put a bunch of comedians in the room, you get a lot of laughter. As long as their presence brings more good to humanity, it is a good thing.
I see gay & straight, black & white well established influential talent. I l love that the Pope said laughter is good for the blood!

In his first days as head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis said, “it is not possible to establish true links with God while ignoring other people. Hence it is important to intensify dialogue among the various religions, and I am thinking particularly of dialogue with Islam.”. He has also been meeting with Muslim leaders yearly to build relationships with them based on "commonalities between Christianity and Islam". From my understanding, since the 60's it has been a goal of the Vatican to have peace and dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
Yes, unfortunately it’s the radicals on any side that make the world unbearable. Great to see Papa Francis sewing a little Christian love.
One of my favorite comedians, Mike Birbiglia, was also there. He's less famous than many of the others, but mightve been invited becasue he is catholic, or at least grew up catholic. I'm not sure to what extent he is practicing. He's the guy in between Chris Rock and JLD in the group shot at 3:42.

Jim Carrey has become a very inspirational Catholic. I'm sure he'll be invited to meet the Pope one day.

I’m an atheist but I would love to actually meet the Pope. I disagree with most of his beliefs but I believe he’s a good man. Comedy is necessary in our lives, especially now.
I'm agnostic, and I feel the same. He seems very welcoming.

Many of the Americans included either grew up Catholic or are still practicing Catholics. I think Gaffigan had two of his children with him, who also met the Pope and received blessings.

Yes, you don’t know who declined or the reasons why.
That was an interesting collection to be sure. I think you mainly got NY-based entertainers. Otherwise I think Steve Martin and Martin Short would have been great additions. I also loved Gaffigan's joke about them being a collection of people who misbehaved the most at church when they were kids.
I think the person that told Jimmy Fallon to sit down was Jim Gaffigan because that looked like his suit😂

Conan O' Brien if by the grace of God , you read my comment, please do not sell the Rosary, pray with it through the intercession of Our Blessed Virgin Mary, you can bring Peace to the world and also save your soul. Personally, praying the Rosary, me and my wife were blessed with 2 children after 14 years of Marriage, in addition we were blessed with lots graces, mercies, deliverance of evil. Pray, Pray, Pray the Rosary, as Our Lady of Fatima said in 1917.

I noticed Jim Gaffigan walking past in one of the videos I’ve seen. I hope there’s more videos, and some more interaction between the different comics. What a unifying family thing to see so many of the same genre of entertainers in one place.
Also, does he even speak much Italian? Maybe he does, or does since becoming Pope. But I would think his go-to is Spanish. Lol

Yes. But in thinking about it, it's not like they all just happened to be Rome and the Pope said 'come on over.' I would guess a lot more were invited but had to decline because of commitments where they could not make it to Rome and back.

But I suppose Jesus ate and walked with sinners in the gospels and he's spreading the gospel.

My understanding is that Steven Colbert was a main orchestrator (per Jimmy Fallon) in deciding who went and selecting the diverse group of American comedians. It seems that since this is Whoopi’s second visit, she perhaps had a hand in the planning too.
It was a great idea… humor with a humanistic touch to enhance works peace?

Colbert, Gaffigan, O'Brian, and Goldberg all make sense. They were either raised or are practicing Catholics and/or attended Catholic schools. What the attendees have done with their craft in terms of promoting social justice pulls at The Pope's heart strings.

3/4 of the comedians were italians, and even in that group some big names were missing.

Rome is so beautiful! I’d really like to go there again. I’m a Democrat but I remember when Melania Trump was presented to the Pope. The country she grew up in is quite Catholic and I imagine she still is.
I remember how well dressed she was with the perfect lace headcover. Her face radiated with love for this beloved Pope. I was glad that with all the effort that was expected of her she was able to have such an amazing experience.
