Fun fact, 2023 is a repeat of 1995's calendar. "This card, postmarked December 23. The caption reads:"How does he do it?" Ms. too bad he treats me like I'm dead. Nothing works to make this easy. No more lies. The ones we live will work just fine. So pick up the pieces. Start again, start over Tuesday morning." ~Jimmy Eat World - Christmas Card Merry Christmas.
Y'know what this song weirdly made me realize? While I still like JEW, I've often wondered "what is it about their older sound that they don't really throw in anymore, songwriting wise?", and this song underlines it: its fucking ARPEGGIOS, brah. Those lovely "hey I just found a delay pedal!!" Jim-and-Tom arpeggios. That's all ya need, really.
They've tried that. I feel like Futures was clarity 2.0, and while it's a fantastic record, it wasnt recieved as well as Bleed American, so they went down that road, modern pop rock. At this point, I welcome each new album curious to see what new curve balls they through ("pass the baby," "congradulations,") a surprise Tom song ("invented,") and... well fuck ok. I want more clarity.
I actually feel like they brought back some of that particular Clarity flavor in Integrity Blues. Maybe not down to the 90s emo arpeggios, but in the lighter atmospheric feel of the songs overall.
@@punker-gamer-trucker-guy See, it's funny, I had initially thought of "Futures" as the 'not super well received' followup to "BA" as well, but over time I realized, it's essentially one of their biggest records..."Bleed" has "The Middle", sure, which is that inescapable, but "Futures" had "Pain" and "Work", both of which were inescapable at one time, and also has a lot more non-single album tracks they are likely to throw into a set, like "Kill" etc. I started to realize how much bigger it was when they were repeatedly doing "Futures" album tours, instead of "Bleed American" ones...I had to kinda re-assess. But I still do see what you mean
I didn't mean to leave you hanging on I didn't mean to leave you all alone I didn't know what to say I didn't know what to say Merry Christmas, baby. (Merry Christmas, baby) Merry Christmas.
12.23.24. Merry Christmas Eve Eve
My bday is 12.23.85, so I listen to this every year in my bday. Merry Christmas baby, wherever you are. 💜
25 years that mark one of the (if not) greatest modern Christmas song of our time.
