  • This selection is from a concert that took place on October 20, 2007, in the Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. I played a vilambit gat in tin-tala followed by a drut gat, also in tin-tala. The audio is disturbed a bit in the beginning by feedback from the tabla and later by line crackling, but there are some nice things to hear. Tilak Kamod is treated as a major raga in the Maihar Gharana. I played the gats as I learned them from my guru, Pt. Ravi Shankar, and also played some difficult fixed tans composed by him in my classes. The photos come from the same concert and were taken by my former student, Amitava Sarkar, who has developed into a fine professional photographer.

Beautifully done, sounds exhilarating. I guess the huge organ pipes in the background add to the resonance.
