      I'm absolutely certain it was never recognized. The Constitution forbids erecting a state in the territory of an existing state without that state's permission. Show me where South Carolina ever agreed to this. Even if it did, the Supreme Court case Texas v. White (1869) ruled that secession is illegal, so there's no way an independent country can be carved out of American territory. I bet you one of two things: 1. These people pay property taxes to the State of South Carolina; 2. If they don't pay property taxes, then they're registered with the State as a tax-exempt religious organization. This isn't an independent country. These people are LARPers.

    • @Ash-ms
      @Ash-ms 3 роки тому +1

      They do not claim to be seperate from U.S. law. They are sovereign "spiritually, socially." Here's more info: www.postandcourier.com/news/voodoo-alive-in-south-carolina/article_f48343df-b29a-54c2-a38c-7292fe55df97.html

    • @bigscarysteve
      @bigscarysteve 3 роки тому +5

      @@Ash-ms Thanks for the link. As I surmised, they have a tax exemption as a religious organisation. The title of this video calls them a "sovereign nation." The definition of a sovereign nation is that it has its own laws and doesn't obey another nation. This "nation" fails on both counts. The American government makes no claim to have sovereignty over people's spiritual or social lives. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion, and the Supreme Court has recognised freedom of association as a part of freedom of speech. Their claim to be a sovereign nation is bunk. They are a religious organisation and nothing more.

    • @Ash-ms
      @Ash-ms 3 роки тому +2

      @@bigscarysteve the title calls them that because that's what they call themselves. And people can call themselves whatever they want, and it doesn't mean it's true. It also doesn't hurt you in any way, so I'm not sure why you are so bothered

    It’s not a nation or country within the USA, the people there just say it is. There have actually been several people/groups that have made there own mini-countries with their own “laws” and presidents/leaders though legally it holds nothing. It’s the same as buying land and telling people “I am king of this land”, sure it’s your land but it’s still part of the USA and it’s laws. Fun places to visit though

    Hello, the tradition that you refer to is NOT called voodoo. That is a corruption of the term. It is called OdÙ Ifá, meaning "mystery Divination". This is a Yorùbá traditional village, just like you will find in many Yorùbá kingdoms of Nigeria West Africa. The Oba (king) is linked to the 16 kingdoms of the collective Yoruba peoples of current Nigeria. This village is a big deal and definitely not some voodoo practicing sect. This is a Yorùbá village, descending from prophet Odudua, the progenitor of Yorùbá land and the Yorùbá peoples of the world.
    Some in South America call it Santeria, kandomble or lukumi...

      Connecticut actually has 2 sovereign nations in it. Have you ever heard of Mohegan Sun casino or Foxwoods casino? Both of those are on sovereign land of the Pequot and Mohegan Native American tribes. For the most part they are about 95% like anywhere else in the US. No passports or anything else needed and most Federal and State law is recognized there. Mostly it's taxes and the court system that is different. I admit that I do not know for sure, but I would suspect that this group of people from the video consider themselves to be a sovereign nation but are not recognized officially as so because their society was established after the U.S. was already established whereas the Native American tribes I mentioned previously predated the U.S. I'm happy to hear if anyone else has any insight!

    Jacob, how's about visiting the small Channel Island of Sark, it's a small nation that is a British Crown Dependency that's located in sea between The United Kingdom (my country) and France. There's not any cars driving on there, it's mostly just horse drawn carriages, that and the odd tractor and with the surroundings, it's mostly like a whole village on an Island with also a few natural landmarks.
