P-90 is my favorite pickup, and that is a wonderful guitar - Maestro Lerch knows how to make it sing - thanks Tim!!

Great guitar and fantastic playing (as usual !). I got a 1955 model with the toggle switch. To me, they are one of the very best jazz archtops ever produces by Gibson. Cheers.

That's just too nice. Just the old-fashioned "finger" tone control now. Sounds and looks beautiful. She's found a good home.

That's beautiful right there. Isn't that what Barney Kessel played but only with a single pickup?

Very nice! I find with certain guitars that have individual pickup volume controls I can roll off either the neck or bridge volume a notch or so and the other pickup will leap forward in the blend, almost like I've flicked a switch. With other guitars the changes will be more gradual and subtle. But the taper of the pots seems to have little influence on this: an abrupt taper pot can change the blend gradually while a more subtle taper pot can create the switch effect. Anyway, with P-90s in particular I love the dual pickup tones.

My untouched electronic (ES350 1951) are two volumes and a master tone.

I have a blonde 1952 ES-350. Same 2 volume, master tone set up as this originally was. Still has original small frets. It isn't going anywhere!

Hi Tim. Seth L. did a lot of experimenting when Gibson started offering guitars with multiple pickups. My ‘49 ES350D was sold with the bout knob acting as a bi-directional volume cut (4 lug 1meg pot), with the rear knob pair being master volume & tone. I replaced it with a (stacked) true blend pot. The only advantage I could imagine with the original configuration, would be if someone favored the special brand of tone cut that only occurs when volume is turned down (which could thus be assigned to one pickup or another), and then master-controlled (?). Go figure.

With my 1949 ES-350, the two controls on the lower bout are master volume and tone, and the pot on the cutaway is a FADE control- clockwise brings in the neck pickup, and turning the other way activates the bridge. In the center, both pickups are off. My understanding is that Gibson experimented with different wiring setups. I think a common reversible mod is to replace the fade control with a true blend pot, and leave the master volume/tone as is.

I have a similar guitar which I have wired with three knobs: volume, tone on neck only(bridge always wide open) and a blend pot. With this set up you can get the tone you like with the tone and blend and adjust the volume for solos with out changing the tone very much. Other players might like two tone pots.

I don't use a tone control so this way works for me, your way sound interesting as well.
