There were so many little details in this film that I couldn't cover them all in one video without the it being MUCH longer. One little tidbit I'll share that I found out after recording is that apparently 'Thermae Romae' was filmed on the set that was built for HBO's "Rome" series!
The reason for accuracy is because the artist who draws the original comic is a big fans of ancient Rome. She studied Rome art and history, and she is also living in Italy most of the time. This is why she knows so much of the details in guru level. Enjoy!😊
First thermae romae was a manga and mangakas are dedicated to accuracy. I love the manga. I would like to see the movie but couldn t find how to watch it. 😔
I remember some of the notes, she said tweaked the future emperor's personality into a playboy (the one who supposed to be hadrian's next in line and sickly) amd apologized if its not up to accurate history
Seriously, I don't understand why most Americans and Europeans don't have bidets in their toilets yet. It's just cleaner and it saves lots of toilet paper.
@@MrDosonhai In some places of Europe (France, for one, obviously, where the word "bidet" itself, used across the world, comes from), it is more common, but the answer is obvious - in many respects most places are backwards, and in spite of all the advances in technology (mostly computing) among the developed nations, especially so is North America / U.S. Americans like to think themselves the most advanced, but in many ways, from electrical standards (wiring, outlets, safety) to health and social care, diet, etc., they are sorely lagging and far behind (no pun intended, but "if the bidet fits...") other developed nations across the world.
As i kid, one of the reasons i got into manga was the attention to detail. Stories about history, guns, technology, whatever, are often meticulously researched.
this was a super interesting deep dive! im not familiar with this movie or Ancient Rome as a whole, but you made both topics accessible and entertaining!
Japanese mangakas on their way to make the most authentic aesthetic for historical period pieces. Look up Kaori Mori (I hope I got the name right), who wrote Victorian Romance Emma. It's one of my favourite manga of all time.
Also Otoyomegatari. She literally has spent years roaming the steppes to better understand life there. And the art is probably the best I've ever seen in any manga ever. (Also its Kaoru Mori, you were one letter off)
VERY charming movie and i never like foreign films but i've noticed a big change as of late they are getting really good its great to see thanks for the review u rock sorry about my punctuation
This is my all time favorite movie!! Have your seen the second one?^^ the creator is very well versed in roman history and i love that the production of the movie showed that. Thank you for this video!
I just watched the "live" version of Thermae Romae 2. Neither Thermae Romae 1 or 2 are easily available in the U.S. (and I assume Canada). I think that I originally watched Thermae Romae 1 online, but I can no longer find it. If you find a Hong Kong version of the Thermae Romae DVD on something like eBay, you can watch it on a computer using VLC. The DVD for Thermae Romae 2 did not work for me, but luckily you can find the Hong Kong version on BluRay which works on US Players. I have been unable to find the Hong Kong version of Thermae Romae 1 on BluRay. The advantage of the Hong Kong versions is that they offer English subtitles.
The movie would not mean anything hadn’t you made this video to make us notice all you did… I will send you a link of a video in português but hope you can choose cc in English and enjoy it
To be honest I don't appreciate this insistence in saying that his movie is not. masterpiece. I found it was brilliant. It could even be that they didn't have a high budget.
The “poopstick” IS NOT to wipe your ass!!! 🤦🤦 It is to clean the toilet, like our toilet brush, imagine stupid future people as ourselves thinking the same about us, simply because they have not found the paper
I liked the idea, until they started with like the stereotypical: intellectual nerd, that gets bullied, and the bullied are reward or become friend of the bullied...pretty annoying that.
It’s strange how all the main characters who’re supposed to be Roman are played by Japanese, yet all the prop characters are all played by actual westerners. At least do it the other way around. Japan is masterful at making anime and manga, but not so great when it comes to making movies, oddly.
Well I suppose it's probably harder to find a westerner good enough for the role who also knows good enough japanese for more complex directions that main stars probably have. Redubbing wouldn't be an issue, I guess.
What a grossly condescending, arrogant, and ignorant comment. Some of the greatest filmmakers in the history of cinema were / are Japanese (Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, Hiroshi Teshigahara, to name just a few). The other thing ignorant about that comment is the literal ignoring of all the many "westerner" movies and shows / series that did "whitewashing" (Scarlett Johansson as Motoko Kusanagi in "Ghost in the Shell") or "yellowface," casting a Caucasian as an absolutely awful Japanese or Asian caricature - like *Mickey Rooney* as _Mr. Yunioshi_ in "Breakfast At Tiffany's," *John Wayne* as _Temujin (Genghis / Chinggis Khan)_ in "The Conqueror," *Marlon Brando* as _Sakini_ in "The Teahouse of the August Moon" - or cast non-Japanese Asians (Koreans and even Chinese) as Japanese characters, as most recently Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" casting Korean *John Cho* as the character _Fearless_ who chooses to use the pseudonym 'Spike Spiegel' but who was actually based on Japanese actor *Yusaku Matsuda* ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y%C5%ABsaku_Matsuda ) I hope you're a better "Secret Agent" than you are a cultural critic and judge (of course you are).
@@BeyondDreamTime Just because I didn't mention whitewashing doesn't mean I think it's good. I think any kind of race washing is bad. As for MY OPINION that japanese films aren't the best, I should have been more specific. Yes, I agree with YOUR OPINION (NOT A FACT!) that people like Kurosawa we're great directors, but most modern Japanese films I've seen were kinda meh at best to me, but I guess I'm ignorant and condescending for having an opinion. It's not like I said they were trash or poop films or anything. I'm sorry me having a different opinion offended you. You wouldn't happen to be a leftist, would you? They tend to hate diversity of opinion and throw around the word ignorant like they like to throw around the word racist or misogynist without using those words properly.

Ah that’s another show that had great set design!

The best scene hands down is the "discovery of the Japanese toilet/bidet"!
Seriously, I don't understand why most Americans and Europeans don't have bidets in their toilets yet. It's just cleaner and it saves lots of toilet paper.

I believe the author of the original manga also did a series on Pliny the Elder
The anime is even more indepth highly recommend in fact there is a new one that is even better just came out on Netflix.
The original anime is the best though!

Wow, I was amazed that a historical analyst watch this comedy masterpiece.
Thank you very much for your accurate analyses. In Japan, new version by animation will start by NETFLIX. I'll see and check the "details".
Mannnnn the series is soooo good, very quirky, comedic. I picked it up out of boredom then immediately got hooked.
Ancient Roman after taking a dump: "Ah wash mahself with a sponge on a stick!" *room full of archaeologists clapping*
Well, looks like I know what the next family movie night will be playing! Thanks for this

Highly recommend this film if you need a good laugh! And thanks, I try to throw little stuff into the background when I can 😊

the sequel is very similar and just as comedic. although you probably see better than I do.

This movie is great. The sequel is awesome, too.
When the sumo fighter, Akebono, played himself going by the name of Akebonius. 😅😅😅
I can't find the dvd or bluray with English subtitles
He figures it out at the end, whenever he *cries* he goes to Japan.

If you are still interested the anime of this movie is out on Netflix
FYI, did you know there was a sequel? I did not, I've downloaded it now and while 'dramatic' its funny as fuck. 🤣

Algo brought me here ... it has an Anime sequel coming out
