This third instalment of David’s overview series of Jewish History explores the years between 500 and 1000 CE, known as the period of the Geonim.
    In this talk, David discusses:
    · The geonim, including who they were and the significance of their spiritual authority
    · The political leadership of the Reish Galuta
    · The great academies of Sura and Pumbedita and their rivalries
    · The decrees of Justinian
    · The first attempted forced conversions
    · Persecutions in Spain
    · Wars between Byzantine and Sassanid Empires
    · The Himyarite Kingdom
    · The rise of Islam
    · The conquest of Spain by the Moors in 711
    · Umayyad Caliphate in Spain
    · The slow shift from Babylonia - in two basic directions
    · Nehemiah ben Hushiel
    · Anan Ben David and the start of the Karaite movement
    · The Khazars
    · Charlemagne & Louis the Pious
    · Amram Gaon and the beginnings of the siddur
    · Hiwi of Balkh
    · The decline and revival of Sura
    · Saadya Gaon - the ultimate Gaon
    · Rav Sherira Gaon and Rav Hai Gaon - the close of the Geonic period & the decline of Babylonian Jewry
    · Chisdai Ibn Shaprut and Shmuel HaNagid - symbols of the Golden Age of Spain
    · The rise of Hebrew grammar
    · Rabbeinu Gershom - the father of Ashkenazi Jewry.
He explains how this period in Jewish History sees the laying of the foundations for modern Jewish life and the gradual shift in the centre of Jewish life from Babylonia to Europe. He also examines the geo-political context of this period and the influence of broader historical developments.
This is the third part of David’s six-part overview series of Jewish History, an edited version of a live series given in 2020 for Chabad South Africa and Daminyan Shule in Melbourne. The lecture will be publicly available on 31st March.

Wow! This was like looking for a golden needle in a haystack. I've been searching for months and months for this very topic. It was a struggle to find anything so well explained and interesting. What a fascinating series. I've watched the 1st and 2nd.. There is soooooo much information though, I will go back and listen again, and again I'm sure.. A good few listens will be necessary as there is so much to learn.

You might be surprised who you can have a conversation with,
      Mark 12:36
“For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
      Psalms 110:1
“(A Psalm of David.) The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.”
      Who was David’s Lord?
      John 4:24
“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
      John 4:23
“But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.”
      John 4:22
“Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.”
Isn’t a Jew a believer in God , who does his commandments, didnt God kill the Jews who didn’t do his commandments? Same as he will destroy anyone who says they are Christian, but don’t do his commandments?

A bit late but can David give an opinion on the influence of the rabbinic judaism and the underlying tension and hostility between the Jewish communities and their Christian "host" communities? Could the carryover of the animosity between the Pharisaic order and Jesus the Messiah have laid the foundation of this millenia old Jewish-Christian tension?

Please don't stop putting your lectures on you tube. Funny, I am a South African Christian and I love anything Jewish. I'm learning about the 2nd World War, and listening to testimonies of people who survived the holocaust. Oh what amazing and tragic testimonies there are. USC SHOAH FOUNDATION, is the name of the channel. Some of them are up to 3 or 4 hours long, but what a blessing to listen to these dear beautiful people. I sit and cry through some parts.. what Hitler did was so unimaginably evil. I just cannot understand how the rest of the population didn't DO anything... All those gentiles around the Jews not doing anything.!! .why didn't Britain or America, or SOMEBODY blow up the railway lines going to these concentration camps??!... How could they just sit by and do nothing. ?? It is very upsetting and totally unforgivable!!

Professor Bill Warner gives a very good history on why the Dark ages occurred, because Muslim conquerers choked the Mediterranean totally, no trade could get through, Harming Jews and everyone else, he also gives a good explanation of Islam in his video called a taste of Islam .It is concerning that Anglican, Catholics leaders are confederate with large parts of Islam, especially Saudi Arabia etc, who control their people with dictatorial iron fist.

In the first century there were both Jews and gentiles. How about today, are there Jews and gentiles today? If so, by what objective standard do you determine if someone is a Jew or not?

If ultra-orthodox Jews, my brothers in black , will someday soon all gather together at the Kotel to “…mourn for Him whom they have pierce…”, if my spiritually blind Hasidic brothers would read the New Covenant or Brit had ash’s and see the testimony, the prayers, the blessing in it they may be shock it fulfills the more than 70 prophecies that our prophets of the old Covenant told our hard head ancestors and it offers you heavenly gift , freely, and many of the miracles witnesses saw an testify to. Read if only one book look at the last book, Revelation. That is what will happen to all men.

Perhaps. Many who say they are Christian are not? Jesus forgave those who killed him, Christians are to follow that example,
Perhaps not all Jews are Jews, ( believers and doers of Gods word)
    Romans 2:29
“But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”

When you talk about the Jews of the day, in terms of their religion , temple etc, it is no different than religions like hinduism etc ,the religions of this world,
Knowing Isreal is to know it by the Covenant(s)
Where the old covenant is to Land Inheritance the New Covenant is to Eternal Inheritance unto God himself , comes through the revelation of the Ark of the Covenant, to the prophecy of Jeremiah (also called as the Prophet of the New Covenant) in the book of the Macabees,
