  • If you've ever thought about a career as a PACS Administrator (or what it's more commonly called now, Medical Imaging Informatics) and you've wondered how to get started, I interview the experts, Dr. Jay Crawford and Ally Brown from the Society of Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM). They sat down with me to answer all my questions about how to go from a Technologist to an Imaging Informatics Professional, regardless of what modalities you may have worked in or your experience level.
Dr. Crawford is the Chief Imaging Informatics Officer at University of North Carolina, Department of Radiology, and Adjunct Instructor of Health Informatics and Analytics at Texas Tech University Health Science Center. He has over 30 years of medical imaging and informatics experience, particularly in the introduction and validation of new imaging technologies including Digital Subtraction Angiography, MRI, and Enterprise Imaging. He has extensive experience in Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) development, configuration, and support. Dr. Crawford has been training individuals in PACS and Imaging Informatics for many years. A member of SIIM since 1999, he delivered the System Management lecture at the first SIIM CIIP Bootcamp in 2007, created a SIIM prep course, contributed to the 2nd edition of the Practical Imaging Informatics textbook, and developed a series of introductory lectures for individuals in Malawi.
Dr. Crawford has a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Texas A&M University. Additionally, he has both a Masters and a Doctorate in Health Administration with an emphasis in Health Informatics leadership and education. Both advanced degrees are from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is a Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP), awarded by the American Board of Imaging Informatics (ABII).
Ally Donabella Brown, M.S. is the Vice President of Learning and Director of SIIM Training at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM). With almost ten years of experience in the professional development space within associations, Ally has focused on bringing evidence-based education to medical and association professionals. In her role at SIIM, she oversees the entire learning enterprise of the organization, helping to develop and strategize education, training, and professional development for imaging informatics professionals across image-centric specialties and beyond. A passionate instructional designer and lifelong learner, Ally holds a BS in Adult Education and a MS in Instructional Design and Technology from Bellevue University.
