Our attic was like that. We replaced all the loose insulation with rolls of rockwool. To remove the loose stuff we used a leaf vacuum fitted with a duvet cover as the bag. It inflated to quite a size, but it worked. Needed three duvet covers to do the job. Used flexible duct between the vacuum and the duvet for manoeverability. Full suits and masks of course. Love your channel. God bless!

Look, the wiring needs to be fixed. But its not as big a deal as people are saying. Just take your time with a helper and go through and label all wires, Make sure the breakers/wire are the appropriate size. Replace what you have too, but don't get rid of stuff that isn't necessary. Just clean it up...... make it safe, and move on.

After seeing the plumbing job, can't say l was that shocked at the wiring issues. Although I was a bit nervous watching you touch the wires without knowing if they were energized or not.
For around $20 , a non contact voltage detector can save your life. Or at the very least, from having to change your shorts.
But seriously, get one and use it.

For you DIY guys: Duck tape (the kind you get at the hardware stores) is not for use on ductwork. That's the correct insulation for metal ductwork, but the tape used for sealing it is metal foil type. The adhesive on "Duck tape" will not last very long in an attic or crawlspace. Metal foil sealing tape will last a very long time indeed.

That wiring is terrifying! I could not sleep in that house with that wiring. I’m virtually phobic about electrical fires. Maybe because my Father was an Electrical Engineer and did all my wiring and told me all sorts of horror stories. Good Grief…what were the previous owners thinking?!

I think that wiring is a nightmare! I would want that taken care of ASAP! As far as the duct work is concerned, I see now why your outdoor wood boiler was so inefficient (besides the pipes(?) running from it to the house being laid wrong (or something like that). Thank God that He is with you and your family. Now please hurry up and get that rat's nest of wires taken care of.

I had a similar experience buying a house. The inspector did not point out the electrical desaster in the attic. I found it my second day of renovation. Long story short. I did not pay for the work that was needed to bring the electrical up to code. No the inspector didnt pay for it. The sellers were forced to pay or be sued.
I do not envy you at all. But I got flash backs. Good luck.

I was cringing at that insulation in the attic. Are you sure that it does not have asbestos in it?? We live in NY and seems like every home improvement that gets done has to have an inspection, especially electrical work. Did your house get inspected before you bought it? I'm sure you have those wires all sorted by now - I think I would have spent the money on an electrician to come in - or my husband knows a guy, lol. We do get whatever we do inspected though.

This is the perfect reason you should hire a professional to do all your electrical and your hvac. I am impressed by your hvac knowledge. Order some Manville 1-1/2” ductwrap insulation. Order some pukie and seal all the slips and drives and takeoffs and the adjustable 90’s. Hate to see the results on a ductwork leakage test. From what I see and I can see enough that’s $3k in ductwork repair alone. $1400 for blow in insulation to get up to R-39 and remove the dirty nasty insulation you have up there now.

    • @adamboone5472
      @adamboone5472 4 роки тому

Sure is. It’s a lot easier than saying CCWI-181 water based duct sealant. The vendor I buy from calls it HARDCAST another vendor calls it mastic. All my employees call it pukie more as a generic name. Hope this clarifies things, sorry for any confusion.

I can completely and totally sympathize with what you are dealing with. We bought a 4,000 sq ft house and land in SW Louisiana as an estate and got an incredible deal on it but it is definitely a fixer upper. The house came with a separate workshop building that was completely built out and had an apartment flat above it for when people come to visit. it has been amazing. The family we bought the house from are the ones that built it. Their parents passed away and no one was interested in taking it on. Needless to say there were very few permits pulled or inspections done when the house was built because it was way out of town. So much of this house was rigged in ways that make little to no sense. 1st off this house has a basement which is a horrible idea on land that's basically a swamp. It's come with a whole set of it's own issues. A lot of the plumbing in this house was done using RV Fittings and all the faucet knobs had the hot and cold on the wrong sides and the knobs turned the wrong way. don't ask me why. There are random pieces of garden hose running from the sumps in the basement to the washing machine discharge drain. We unfortunately discovered the pipes to our septic were angled down towards the house and our cleanout was buried under a foot of dirt.10 ft from the house. Super useful. Our friend who owns a plumbing company had to rent a camera just to figure out where all the random pipes in the house and property go. A lot of the pipes underground were crushed or separated so that's another project to fix. He had to rent digging machines and bring a crew of his guys to find and fix the septic. Thankfully he cut us a great deal or that would have really hurt or house fixing fund. Thankfully he also excepted several bribes of our organic eggs. I bribe all our friends with them to come help us. Our electrical is just as bad. All of the breaker panels are snap lock panels which tend to arc, melt and catch on fire. We had major issues with this when we first moved in because we have a lot of reptile enclosures and aquariums with lamps and pumps. We lost the entire contents of our downstairs fridge due to an arked breaker. This is also why our stove/oven is currently out of order. Thankfully we have a good friend who is a fantastic electrician and is coming to replace all the panels and fix the wiring but he's currently on a big construction job so we have to wait unless we want to pay out of our nose. Buying an old home has a lot of perks and advantages of you are willing to take on the work but it is definitely a one job at a time unless you want to go crazy and stress yourself out

What a mess! I think it is insane to run conditioned air through an unconditioned attic anyway. I took out my heat pump and replaced it with 3 mini-split systems that eliminated all my attic ductwork. I got a >16 SEER system in the process with zone capability. I crank the non-bedroom systems back at night and get even greater savings.
I would rewire that entire attic. I would also inspect every wire in that house. You are really lucky you haven't had a fire. There is absolutely no way you can trust your electrical system.
If it hasn't been too long since you bought your house you might have a claim against the previous owner for undisclosed problems.at the time of the sale. You might talk to a lawyer.

  • @DanielinLaTuna
    @DanielinLaTuna 4 роки тому +5

Do like Seven Owls and totally redo the insulation. They do make a special vacuum that will suck out all the loose fill; you can then blow in new , or upgrade. As for the ductwork, you would be better served with solid, like some of the existing. The flexible is easier to use, but the rigid will flow much better.
I nearly screamewhen I saw your electrical. That's one reason I don't really like Romex. My preference is aluminum EMT, or aluminum armored. Just in case mice get in. You're probably best off ripping it all out and starting from scratch. That's what my brother is doing.
Consider getting a Tyvek suits and respirator. The 3M dust mask is ok, but I'd feel better for you if you had better protection. Cheers, from California!

Right attitude. Previously owned homes, the older they are seems to mean bigger surprises/nightmares. Knowing what the electrics is like up in your attic at least gives you the knowledge to not add too many electrical demands on the current system; there is your ability of preventing an electrical fire for now. It does look like total replacement as each room is remodeled is a good plan of action. Wars are only won after many battles are won first.

It is always so stark just how different the average house is in Australia compared to America. Installing a reverse cycle AC unit is often all the HVAC bases (barely)covered here. Between the wood boiler or furnace, all the ducting, the network of pumps and piping, it is so much more complicated for y'all.
I'm sure many houses are done well here also. But the majority are cookie-cutter designs where every cost is trimmed. And where the developers don't have to live in the houses.
Just found your channel and have learned a lot on many fronts. Glad you recovered well after that mishap with the boar.

As a supervisor on a 20 bldg. property a contractor re shingled all bldgs., thousands of dollars. Well , I noticed many vent stacks for the sewer gas were missing. I inspected every attic and roof and found most pipes were pushed down into the attic. They had covered the holes with shingles. Needless to say they paid dearly for that mistake. As far as attics, squirrels and rats chewed electrical lines , oh what fun. Glad I am retired. People being lazy does not amaze me anymore. Believe me Todd I feel your grief and despair. Who ever did that made up codes as they pleased.

I have done many a remodeling projects but nothing like the mess you have in that attic! I would suggest you invest in a multi tester and some red electrical tape and check ever wire in the attic, mark the hot lines with the red tape and remove the dead lines... then you start tracing the hot lines (one at a time) and find out where they go and what they supply and rewire accordingly. Eat the elephant one bite at a time. As the weather gets cooler (cold), good time to work in the attic and remember SAFETY FIRST! Good Luck...

You saved yourself at least $1,000 dollars by doing Rework on the Ducts and Insulation not to even mention all the energy savings in the future - Good For You! I hope you have some nice manual Dampers to balance air flow to each room. Indeed an atrocious wiring rats nest to deal with.

Been doing electrical for the better part of thirty years now. Have seen worse, not to say what you have found is good at all. How’s the electrical coming along ? I’ve learned a few tricks or two, any questions don’t bother asking.

WOW!! What a can of worms you opened. Enough bait to supply a dozen fishermen for a whole season. One room at a time. But it could be bridged in the attic with another room all together. Be careful.

No home inspector is going to take the time to dig around the blown insulation. Most of them aren't worth the money anyway.

utahgeoff well, who recommends home inspectors? Real estate agents do. If an inspector is too critical and kills too many deals, how many agents will refer him/her in the future? 🤔

Perhaps a home inspection is not required in this particular jurisdiction. Perhaps no building codes. This would have been denied for sure. Maybe SSL can do a Q & A and give us closure.

Ditto. This is why I think NEC should be EMC (metal conduit) like it is here in Chicago. Any bad connections done by DIYers can be safely contained in metal. Any bad wiring can be easily pulled and replaced.
Also, little to no EMI, even if doesn't harm people, it harms TV and FM/AM signals and even *WiFi*

@@shimes424 All electrical wiring should be in metal conduit no matter where you live. You don't want a squirrel chewing your wires.

This is a good time of year for working up there. I can see that the heat would be unbearable in the summer.
What about a roll of masking tape and a Sharpie in the attic for labeling with another person flipping breakers at the panel to see what is powered where? Cell phones would work for communication.

well there's a finite number of things to fix, so after you discover which wires only need to be removed and which wires need to be replaced by a safer gauge and after you add junction boxes for what remains ... it will be done for good
