    "Why is it that people who can't keep fish also can't spell the name properly?" Well, if you look up a fish enough to care for it properly, the spelling of the name becomes muscle memory.

      It's the same in the invertebrates keeping community. A lot of new people are using the common names rather than latin scientific names, problem that causes is different tarantula species can have the same common name. Sad thing is the posts with common name are usually attached to a post saying for example "just rescued this rose hair from pet store, I need info on the care, what i should use as enclosure, how much substrate, what it eats and how often" they are always "rescue" yet havent even done any basic research into the care and husbandry of any tarantula let alone the specific genus and species they just bought. I was researching for about 5 years before I bought my first tarantula as I wanted to make sure I had as much info as possible, some people forget that owning a pet is a big responsibility and not something that should ever been done on a spare of the moment thing (unless it's out of your control like for example finding a litter of puppies that have been abandoned) as I'm dyslexic it took me almost a year to learn, understand and to get pronunciation of the latin names. Even from day 1 I would try to use the latin name and I'm so grateful that google is amazing and could understand what I was trying to search for 😅😅 and screenshotting lots of yt videos when the latin names came on screen. Sadly some people are to lazy to give the care the animals need and just use said animal as an accessory, prime example of this is people who own monkeys as pets but that's another convo for a different time haha

    I had a gorgeous blue betta that I named Kisame (back in my Naruto days) and he would go crazy for bloodworms. He was honestly the best fish, not that I'd had a whole lot of fish before him. The odd goldfish here and there, and pet-sitting a family members betta Oscar before. I had more turtles than I had fish, lol. But just the mention of bloodworms made all the memories come back of sitting in the kitchen just watching Kisame eat and swim around and rest on his little leaf.

    i still remember going into petbarn to get some plants/food and an old fella came in to ask for some goldfish, i dont remember the size but he had he had a tank that was crazy small, the worker "tried" to explain to him it wasnt cool and after the man said once they get too big he will "set them free" the worker was shocked and told him he didnt feel comfortable selling to him. not only 4 minutes later the man found another worker and the worker didnt ask a single question about his tank size and they let him buy the fish. this was one of those times i wish I could overcome my social anxiety and tell him "yo these fish are going to die and hes going to set them free" i still think about it sometimes wondering if the fish somehow survived and are now destroying a lake because they got too big...

    • @madderandmadder
      @madderandmadder Рік тому +7

      The worker should've told him he was calling the cops if he confessed that tbh because the release of non-native species is illegal in most states. And I'm certain they'd probably find some non-native fish in the waterways by his house if they investigated.

    Mr Perfect is like me. Can make something small work really well. I've had people tell me off when I mention my large planted vase. It is brimming with plants and is basically Walstad (thick layered substrate), but with a tiny filter to polish the water and for circulation. It has a heater, it has an airstone and a tiny little air pump. It also has a nice peice of bog wood in it planted with 4 types of anubias and some java fern. And it's planted wall to wall with fast growing stem plants of several different varieties plus some frog bit floating on top. It is home to 1 male betta a couple snails. I think it's about 5 gallons.

    My walmart had a fish section with someone who knew a bit about fish keeping taking care of them all the fish were healthy and there were never any dead ones. I bought a betta from there that lived four years. Unfortunately they took out the fish section and replaced it with chicken and horse feed... which the town already has like six of those.

    • @appalachiabrauchfrau
      @appalachiabrauchfrau Рік тому +8

      walmart always does this to small towns. They start offering niche supplies tailored to the town's "sector" that are already sold by locally owned stores, and they do so at cheaper prices ensuring they can get more people through the doors and spending more because they end up picking up more than they intended to shop for. Eventually they drive the locally owned stores out of business, which means that the holdouts will HAVE to shop there. It was a monetary based decision I'd bet, there's more farmers and equestrians in your area than there are fish keepers or people looking to buy fish, and the more stores around walmart the less money they're getting because of competition. Every person who shops for goat feed at a local feed store is one less person buying junk they don't need but happened to pass by and thought "why not?" at walmart.

    the only way you could rescue fish from stores without causing more harm is to request taking the fish for free. most stores wont let you but there are a few exceptions. my friend managed to get a dying betta from petsmart for free because the employees said it would just die anyways. she got him into a good tank, gave him good food, and took proper care of him, he lived for 3-4 years. thats pretty much the only chance you have to really rescue fish because the moment someone profits off those fish they only want to sell more

    Guys question: I’m wanting to do a planted betta tank(my first one 5.5 gallon) with fluval stratum substrate, do I still have to “gravel vac” the substrate? Or will the fish poop just, like, help further fertilize the substrate? I’ve never heard this addressed before so some advice would really help! Have a blessed day :)

    • @HaruUch1ha
      @HaruUch1ha 2 роки тому +9

      Well, since you're going to be doing a 5.5gal I would suggest doing a solo betta. Typically, the "cleanup crew" (ottocinclus, bnp's, and corys) are going to be the ones that are stirring up and mixing the detritus into the substrate for good fertilization. Since you wont have any of those bottom dwelling fish you will still need to gravel-vac every once in a while since the substrate will not be getting mixed up "naturally." Hope it helps and I wish you luck with your endeavors! :D

    • @antoniomargallo5317
      @antoniomargallo5317 2 роки тому +2

      On top of the fertilized substrate you need almost an inch of gravel or sand on top of it. If the gravel layer is too thin, and I think I did that on my last tank, the substrate may sip into the water, giving it an undesirable brown tint to the water. I don't have that much wood, I changed the wool and even replaced the carbon on the filter, it helped, but I think I did a too thin of a gravel/sand layer. If you plan to have corys, they will stir up the gravel. Of course you will need to clean the corys poop, they will eat what the other fish won't eat, and what sinks to the bottom. If you still can, get a bigger tank. I got a 60 liters, 15 gallons, two years ago, and let me tell you, my 100 liter tank is a breeze to maintain compared to that ... 60 liter hellhole I got myself into. And you would think that after a decade on the hobby you have it all dialed up, you don't. Even in the same species, from fish to fish you see big differences, Like people name them Zebra Danios, but I had such an horrible experience I call them Tiger Danios. And Blood Tetras, they got the name right with those ones, I had to return the hole six or seven of them to the store (I'm a good customer and even sell them guppies occasionally), and two days later I came back and they had to isolate them, because their bad aggressive behavior was being copied by the rest of them at the store, not the other way around like one would think. It's a challenging but also rewarding hobby, the people on it are mostly really pleasant and willing to help newcomers.

    • @samus4799
      @samus4799 2 роки тому +2

      I'd suggest going with a female betta and using some snails and shrimp to help keep the tank clean.
      Females are less aggressive so are more compatable with tank mates. Their smaller fins also make them more healthy as they begin to enter the later stages of their life.
      The detritus could potentially give nutrients to plants, but will be visible. You'll have to remove it manually still unless you're cool with it being there. Alternatively, if you have a carpeted tank you won't have to worry about it.

    I got a question if you add too many plants to the tank will there not be enough food to go around for everyone to grow and some will die?

    6:55 Minecraft blocks are 1 meter cubes. So I'd guess that that is actually around a 10 gallon tank. Would be great for a betta. That goldfish is huge.

    It might make a good themed tank for a classroom or a hospital tank that you can take to the fish vet or pet store to diagnose your sick fish though just don’t move it around too much

    Cutest baby animal: I'm very biased towards lemurs. But they're also my favorite animal overall so. Yeah, that bias I mentioned.
    Aquatic bonus round: baby ghost shrimp. That is a nearly translucent teardrop with eyes. So weirdly cute.

    I've been doing research on what other fish you can keep with Betta fish. I have a male Betta fish named Atticus and keep him in a 10 gallon artificial tank(all natural hides and silk plants so he doesn't get hurt on the decorations). I want to add one nerite snails and possibly a small school of either neon tetras or candy striped tetras. What is your opinion on it. Should I only get the snail(because of the shell protects it in case Betta gets aggressive). Or do you think it would be fine to add both. I have a hospital tank that is already cycled to put the fish in(just in case they are coming in with any sickness) before they go in the main tank and also to quickly move them back in if the Betta ends up attacking the tetras. Please lmk what you think

    • @valerieellison2483
      @valerieellison2483 Рік тому

      I would get the snail first and find out how friendly or aggressive the Betta is. If all goes well for a few months you can get the tetras.

    17:05 Algae bloom is what you supposed to do with goldfishes if you cannot put enough filtration to catch the excess of nitrates. BUT! If it quickly bloomed the water, it's not an algae, it's a cyanobacteria! Hudge NO-NO! Cyanobacteria is toxic.
