Actually it is a juniper neck, they showed us all the different woods at the shop in Istanbul as the builders of these pointed out. Apparently it's a fairly common wood to use for the necks.
Good to know which wood that is. Now I need to find a forrester, for I bet wild junipers are getting rare and protected by law. Maybe there are garden varieties. Great. Why? Well, a friend gave me a saz, but unfortunately he did not like the beautiful inlay patterns, so it was chisseled away. Now I got the problem of replacing this fingerboard. Thanks for the juniper tip. Could be a good option.

Well, I think it's pretty much the same thing, except for the tuning, that tends to be 1-2 whole steps down (but maintaining the same intervalic structure, therefore it sounds and plays the same, just a little lower pitched). There's no significant difference between the short neck and long neck baglamas, apart than that.
it's great that you made this video, it's very helpful. maybe you could make another (with more basic and slow steps) for people who have no idea about instruments like this. and i would like to add that this instrument is not turkish. i mean turks also play this of course. but at the time people in the east mediterranian and the mesopotamia (four thousand years ago) were playing this, the turks were still in mongolia!

Question. In guitars the strings are ALWAYS numbered from high to low pitch. First string is a high E, 6th string is low E. Always. Is that really different, talking about a saz? Sure?
Cool video, but usually u dont play full accords u just pull the strings (top,middle,bottom)whenever u use them, the pulling of all is mostly at ends of songs or columns
Im 16 years old, totally not knowing about the saz or how to play it. I want to play it tho because it has this unique sound based of the turkic culture. My question is, do i need a 50€-150€ saz to begin with? Or am i fine with a lower prized saz? Also do i need years of lessons? Or is it quite easy to learn even the fastest instrumental songs?
Hello Altai Turk. I recommend that you buy the highest end (quality) instrument you can effort. Similar to many other musical instruments starting to play will be easy but mastering the baglama will take time and may require guidance.

It is not the real traditional intstrument. This is the short neck bağlama which is desingned in 60's to simplify lerning. Real traditional Turkish intstrument is long neck bağlama.
The tuning he uses require different strings than what you may be using! Long neck instruments are often tuned Bb F C (top to bottom) and string sets come with 0.20mm for the highest pitch. Trying to tune a string made for C4 to F4 will definitely break it.

When do people understand that baglama (short neck) is different from the long neck (bozuk/düzen. Long neck was invented a while ago with 23 curtains, later the Kurds invented the baglama (short neck) 19 curtains to simplefy the playing style so you didnt have to move your hand up and down. Long neck has been around for centuries and short neck only a couple hundred years.

@@ALTAI38 Not sure if you're still looking for one but Yilmaz Saz Evi is the most expensive seller of these instruments in Turkey so I'd definitly recommend NOT buying from them. Yes they have quality instruments but you'll pay atleast double the price for it, there are plenty of stores in Turkey which sell equal quality instruments for half the price. If you look up the prices for the best ones which are made from Mulberry tree's it should be in the range of 2 to 2.5k TL(300-400 euro) maxing out around 3.5k TL. Yilmaz Saz Evi sells similar instruments starting at 4k TL... Btw the Mulberry saz are the ones used on stage by alot of artists, including those named in this video(Arif Sag/Ozlem Ozdil and many more great artists). The Turkish name of these saz's are Oyma Dut Saz(or Oyma Dut Baglama or just Dut Saz) a great alternative to the Oyma Dut Saz is the Yaprak Dut Saz, which is a little less used by the best artists but not unfamilliar to them. Hopefully you'll be able to get one for a little less than those sold at Yilmaz Saz Evi. I'm gonna buy my Oyma Dut Saz in November when i will be in Istanbul. :) gonna learn to play this beautiful instrument and hopefully be able to learn and sing those beautiful old songs of Arif Sag and other artists.

Well, it is actually a Turkic instrument but it must have rooted itself deeply in Kurdish culture after 1000 years of interaction with Turks.

2:35 in this part you are playing it like a Greek tune. If it was with Tzouras or bouzouki, it would sound completely the same.

You can buy a perfectly adequate baglama for $149 on ebay. You don't need a fancier one to learn on.
you can find bagalama's at turkey from $30 but if you want a good quality baglama ( at turkey) you should buy one from $70

Sur. But also european use saz very often. By example the polish group "perceval". In France You will find a lot of peaple who think saz come from greece or turkey or rumania. Other example i play bouzouki, irish bouzouki. this instument has a origin from greece and turkey but also now from ireland.
