He did not say one very important thing. In the 1990s, there was serious talk that the US should abolish its military bases in Germany, just as the Soviet Union had done. The military presence in Germany gave the USA influence over German and European politics, and the USA did not want to give it up. Bombing Serbia and supporting the creation of Kosovo enabled the creation of a military base, the second largest in Europe, in case the US was forced to leave Germany. That is why the USA exerted pressure to recognize the state of Kosovo, where they built a base at a time when it officially belonged to Serbia.

The default nature of the Balkans is war. Plain and simple. If the US were to leave tomorrow, war would break out, and 10,000's would die. The "bombing of Serbia" killed no more than 1,000 Serbs. Not exactly the genocide Serbian nationalists want to believe.

There was also the invasion of Libya. China and Russia stood aside in this conflict and watch with horror how NATO and its mercenaries destroyed that country. When they tried to do the same in Syria, Russia began to take a stand against the intervention with China support in the Security Council of the UN. These two conflicts made Russia realize that NATO needed to be stopped.

Putin is not stupid so he understood that Russia will be targeted when it gets stronger. So he prepared. And it's not fair to say that sanctions don't work at all. But since there were some sanctions since 2014 - people get used to it, economics also changed etc. Plus the west underestimates the strength of russian people. We survived the 90s with default and uncontrolled crime crisis so the sanctions don't hurt us as much as they would have hurt americans or europeans.

A year before the breakup of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, on Nov. 5, 1990, the U.S. Congress passed the 1991 Foreign Operations Appropriations Law 101-513. This bill was a signed death warrant. One provision in particular was so lethal that even a CIA report described three weeks later in the Nov. 27, 1990, New York Times predicted it would lead to a bloody civil war.
Only forces that the U.S. State Department defined as "democratic forces" would receive funding. This meant an influx of funds to small right-wing nationalist parties in a financially strangled region suddenly thrown into crisis by the overall funding cut-off.
The 1991 Foreign Operations Appropriations Law also prescribed various forms of economic strangulation for several other countries deemed enemies, including Angola, Cambodia, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Korea (DPRK) and Vietnam. On the other hand countries moving hastily toward a capitalist market economy in 1990, such as Poland, were to receive special funding.

I live in the US and the people who make the major foreign policy decisions here have two main goals: control all the world's money and control all the world's oil, or as much of it as possible. The more capitalist-based a country or a particular set of leaders are, the more amenable they will be to US-based corporations exploiting their markets and resources. That's all they (my govt) cares about. To that end, my govt will provide financial assistance to countries they see as friendly to western Big Capital interests (but always with special strings attached and usually to the detriment of the common person in said country, eg world bank or IMF loans); and use influence, threats, or attempt CIA coups for the purposes of regime change in nations they see as opposing Western Capital expansion. Amy nation not willing to be manipulated or influenced by the US to the degree they demand is at risk of one or more methods of US govt muscle-flexing and coercion. In extreme cases, this means my govt will come up with a dummy reason to invade and send in our military, such as what happened in Vietnam, the Korean war, Iraq, the small island of Grenada, and now with Ukraine, although that's what we call a proxy war. You can best believe my govt is doing everything possible to cause and deliberately escalate this current conflict between Ukraine and Russia due to Putin's opposition to being a continued target of NATO and to submit to a US agenda of dominance and control. Yes there are most certainly pre-existing local tensions but as they have always done, my govt is very expertly maximally exploiting these to their own ends.
It's what they like to do.

Let's set aside any justifications for a moment and focus on the facts. A sovereign nation experienced a secessionist movement backed by terrorist attacks. It's only natural for any country to respond with force, which can unfortunately lead to atrocities. The issue here is the apparent double standard: the West supports Ukraine's efforts to remain unified, largely due to its anti-Russian government. However, when Serbs take similar action against Albanians in defense of their sovereignty, they face punishment and demonization, primarily because of their close relationship with Russia.

There are opinions that NATO has decided to tear Serbia apart and take over the territory piece by piece. This would slowly reduce the zone of Russian influence to zero. Madeleine Albright said that it was Vojvodina's turn. They have not been able to achieve this so far because Serbs are the majority of the inhabitants of Vojvodina.

Noam Chomsky thought it was done to get Yugoslavia into the neoliberal system. From an interview:
DM: Last month marked the seventh anniversary of the beginning of the bombing of Yugoslavia. Why did NATO wage that war or I should say why did the United States wage that war?
NC: Actually, we have for the first time a very authoratative comment on that from the highest level of Clinton administration, which is something that one could have surmised before, but now it is asserted. This is from Strobe Talbott who was in charge of the…he ran the Pentagon/State Department intelligence Joint Committee on the diplomacy during the whole affair including the bombing, so that’s very top of Clinton administration; he just wrote the forward to a book by his Director of Communications, John Norris, and in the forward he says if you really want to understand what the thinking was of the top of Clinton administration this is the book you should read and take a look on John Norris’s book and what he says is that the real purpose of the war had nothing to do with concern for Kosovar Albanians. It was because Serbia was not carrying out the required social and economic reforms, meaning it was the last corner of Europe which had not subordinated itself to the US-run neoliberal programs, so therefore it had to be eliminated. That’s from the highest level.

Nato bombing of Serbia (Yugoslavia) WAS GREATEST WAR CRIME after the WW2. Kosovo Albanians were just the minority in Serbia that had ALL (their University on albanian language, basically ALL they ever asked for), and if there wasnt for Tito who created "Autonome Province of Kosovo and Metohija" nothing would happen. Albanians that lived on Kosovo for generations, WERE NEVER for separate country, THEY LOVED YUGOSLAVIA, and UCK (Kosovo Liberation Army - which was designed as terrorist organization by CIA just 1 year prior to the bombing) was killing those Albanians that didnt hate Serbia and Yugoslavia. In 1998 (but also before, in 1981 Albanians slaughtered ENTIRE guard platoon, who were soldiers yet to be trained) they started to kill policemen, and in numbers, they made many ambushes, IED, etc. So, one day, YU army + police made the operation to wipe out them in village of Racak. They did their job imaculate. But, from some reason Serbs LEFT those bodies of KLA killed soldiers and KLA came during the night and CHANGE THEM, they put civilian clothing and remove markings of KLA. All of those "victims" were young man, fit to fight, 0 women, 0 oldmen, 0 children. NATO used that FAKED incident to BOMB and POLUTE an independent country and people. Similar "netrocities" can be seen even today in Ukraine, like that "russian soldier" decaputating the enemy - I mean, who can buy that sht ???

From 1945 (even before the formation of the CIA) to 1953, the US supported the Nazi collaborators in Western Ukraine forming an underground insurgency within the Soviet Union (resulting in 300K deaths - Scott Ritter recently said) This is while US conducted Operation Paperclip and Canada welcomed Nazi collaborators to become Canadian citizens.
1948 - Henry A Wallace (of the FDR administration but who Truman had fired) runs for the presidency in the US on the Progressive Party ticket. He was adamantly against the growing tensions with the USSR
    1949 - NATO formed
In 1953 Stalin died and Khrushchev heads the Soviet Union. Eisenhower gave his "Chance for Peace" speech.
In 1954 the Soviets offered to enter NATO (the Molotov proposal). The US refused
In 1955 the Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact and the Cold War continued unabated

No, Serbian megalomaniac politics is the main reason Yugoslavia broke up. At the time Slovenia and Croatia broke away from Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia looked more like a fascist state than a socialist one. Long story short, Slovenia and Croatia wanted more autonomy (most developed republics being hold back in development by the extremely poor regions, like Kosovo), they got it in 1974., Tito died in 1980. and from then onward Serbs started to gradually take over the control of Yugoslavia, again centralising all the power in Belgrade. If they weren't acting like that, maybe Yugoslavia would still exist to this day (probably as a confederacy, with even greater autonomy for republics) or at the very least, there wouldn't be any blood spilled after the break up. Sadly they chose what they chose, sacrificing their own people for their stupid, megalomaniac, power-thirsty causes.

The real reason was that: 1. Serbs and Macedonians were always looked by the West as little Russians (Orthodox Christianity and Cyrilic Script), and 2. Because Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) did not allow NATO bases on their land. So, the West decided to carve-out Kosovo and Metohiya from Serbia and built there their biggest base in South Europe. - The Bondsteel military base. So, they did that for geopolitical reasons..

Since 2014 those two have been writing and speaking about this day coming. People from both parties hated Trump when he said NATO needs to be dissolved. He was right. I believe we wouldn't be in this situation if he was the president. The United States lost an opportunity to repair a relationship with Putin after the foreign policy debacles of the Obama administration. Which only caused Russia to befriend China instead, what a dumb move. Trump had a good relationship with Putin. But the democrat’s poison that well by instigating the fake Russia collusion. If Trump was seen as even talking to Putin he would have been labeled as a Putin stooge and proved them right. So Trump wasn't allowed to repair relations, what a mistake. Look what it has caused, the suffering of an entire country and millions of people, and all could have been prevented. Another U.S failed foreign policy.
Dr. Gideon Polya author of the book “ American Holocaust, Millions Of Untimely American Deaths “ counted 70 different
times the U.S. invaded other nations since
1776 - or about once every 3-4 years.

America is a country ruled by oligarchs, who enrich themselves through cronyism, endless warfare, and kleptocracy. In the last 100 years, America prospers by benefiting from the death and misery of other nations. Isolated by two oceans, America relies on its military interventions, bases and installations around the world to control territories of its current and future interests. America welcomed the war in Yugoslavia, for it solved a problem of the third world countries; Yugoslavia was the leader of NAM, Non-Aligned Movement in the “third world” that did not want to align themselves with either Eastern or the Western bloc. NAM insisted on mutual collaboration, bartering and avoiding of the US dollar trade standard. When NAM lost leadership (which also consisted of Libya and Iraq, two prominent NAM countries), it was easy for the oligarchs to conquer poor third-world countries with impossible-to-repay loans and debt. America hates large unified and strong countries, like Yugoslavia was, then Russia, China, or post-war Serbia. If it can't control them - like they controlled Boris Yeltsin and previous leaders of China - It will do everything to destabilise them, starting from publicly demonising them, then through psychological warfare of exporting fake news and lies, social-reengineering via the decadent cultural exports and the so-called “sexual freedoms”, that destroy families and cultural cohesion, then through "globalism", that destroys strong local independent economies. Destabilising Serbia in the Balkans after the war was a strategic move in order to destabilise a traditional Russian ally in the Balkans and to threaten others who won’t comply.

The terrible violence against the Bosnian Muslims was preceded by the fact that the agent of the Americans, Osama bin Laden, transported a force of thousands of mujheddin mercenaries to Bosnia. These forces ransacked 52 Bosnian Serb villages (mostly attacked on Christian holidays...) and killed 3200 Bosnian Serbs, indiscriminately! These marauders attacked from Szebrenyica, a city protected by the UN!

Thank you for this report. Educational as always.
Here's what I see happening, in a nutshell, as a US citizen.
Those who make major foreign policy decisions here have two main goals: control all the world's money and control all the world's oil, or as much of it as possible.

Same muslim extremist soldiers where killed in Srebrenica after their capture by serb armie in revenge for them killing serb civilians in neighboring vilages around Srebrenica for years in most grusom mideval ways.

Vilay Prashad points out himself the critical point, namely that it wasn't until 1994 (Maastricht Treaty, 1 Nov. 1993) that the EU -- Europe, not the EEC -- formalized efforts to establish an unified economic and political policy let alone a unified military policy, the latter which still is not in place today. The post-WWII status of the EU was more or less defenseless, both in terms of military power to defend itself, but perhaps more importantly, in terms of a unified strategy to defend itself, which again is questionable today -- 80 years later. Cooperations among EU nations was tenuous in the post-war era. It took until 1957 to create the European Economic Community (EEC). While "power" also comes with responsibility, one must also rightly observe that "responsibility" must come with "power", both in term of strength but also in terms of authority to carry out that responsibility. If the EU did not wish NATO security forces to defend them until 1993 (and still today), they should not have signed the NATO treaties and accepted the security forces, for which they still haven't paid the bill in any significant amount. Nor should its members have voted for the bombings, though several voted against. Bill Clinton was president at the time of this bombing. It is doubtful that one can hold that Bill Clinton represents the sum of "American NATO policy" for the entire period of NATO's existance, but he was the president at the time. I notice the guest doesn't even mention Bill Clinton, but attributes all to "American power seeking", while simultaneously and clearly mentioning Russian leaders as a "partners of peace". The guest further describes Russia as "pliable" and says the question is about who will dominate Europe, Russia or China. Interesting alternatives. Many have rightly questioned the motives behind the Yugoslavia bombings, which were not sanctioned by Congress, but they were sanctioned by NATO members. They should question them.

Those two 'countries' were created by Serbs to guarantee that no one would stop them from carrying out massive genocides against people they used to call brother and sister.

As a Serb born and raised in Serbia, was thought to love and believe in Yugoslavia by both my parents. I was called Chetnik at the age of 9 back in the late 80’s when visiting family in Bosnia. Shameless muslims in my family and their redneck friends; no wonder Alija was able to play his role the way he did. I can tell you with certainty that the upbringing of a lot of Bošnjaka was to hate anything Serbian. No different then in Croatia. No one hated you in Belgrade and in Serbia before the war, I know because of my dad’s background.
Unlike you, I know my identity and know I am a Serb who’s ancestors accepted Islam on my dad’s side, but not being a muslim or atheist I am still a Serb. What are you without your religion? And not to be misunderstood, I support you being a Muslim, I am a Christian and have no issues with other religions nationalities race etc. Everyone deserves their place under the sun, but I can’t stand ultra nationalists and hypocrites, no matter if they’re Serb or not. You assuming “New Yugoslavia” would not have Serbs in it, is to be naive to think it could exist or ever been created without them. Unless you’re planning another NDH with the Croats?
Someone also should teach you what karma really is, it’s certainly not in death and destruction, but your statement just shows how much hate you have in you. Blind to see no one benefited from the war but those who “couldn’t agree”.
We don’t need another Yugoslavia to respect one another, but “brother”, I can never respect you and I am sure no one outside your inner circle does as you are full of hate. You need detox.
