That was an awesome outing. Rock hunting, biking and good food it doesn’t get any better than that ! We’ve really had super nice weather on our side of the state so far this summer.
I loved that part of the state for Rock hunting when I stayed in Rogers city in the fall. There were so many public accesses to beaches along US 23, from Rogers City all the way to Cheboygan. Seagull point park was my favorite. Nothing can beat a sunrise on Lake Huron either. Looks like a great place to go where you are. Thanks for taking us along!
I went to Seagull Point last summer or the summer before, I don't remember which. The rocks were pretty small near the parking lot, but got better the farther I walked.

How happy the numerous rocks-plopping-in-the-lake made me. Beautiful locations on a beautiful day with two beautiful people. Thanks for bringing me along.
Great video, I've driven past the fossil park, I don't know how many times, but never stopped to look at it. I had no idea it was set up to actually look through calcite's stones. Thanks for pointing that out, you taught me something about my own town. Speaking of Calcite, I found a baseball size boulder of lake tumbled rainbow calcite crystals this year, not far from the lighthouse. I wonder if they ever find the crystals whole in the quarry? Lot's and lot's of Rockhounds the last few years in Rogers City. It's great to see so many people out enjoying themselves in our sleepy little town. However, by this time of year they have a lot of the beaches picked fairly clean, we need a Big storm to get stuff stirred up again and then of course spring brings lots of new rocks to start all over with!!
I agree that it's great for people to enjoy this hobby, but that also makes it less likely that people will find rocks. Still, look at how many little puddingstones we found in the middle of the summer. There are still some out there. If you're ever up in Houghton, visit the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum. That place is incredible, even if you're not really into rocks. They have amazing specimens from all over the world. There's an old quarry near Alpena, called the Paxton Quarry. It's owned by LaFarge and full of water now. I was surprised at some of the things that were found in that quarry and displayed in the museum. I don't remember if there was anything from Calcite, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was. The Besser Museum in Alpena has a fossil park too, but the limestone there comes from LaFarge.
Great video. Nancy found some nice rocks in the water. Maybe time to turn in the dad shoes for some like Nancy's. 😄Cool bike trail. Variety of neat things. The burgers looked good.
Your videos really bring us into whatever you're doing, whether it's rock hounding or being in your kayak. Today's looked just a perfect day to be out and I'm envying Nancy right now as that water looked so inviting. I'm heading up to Brimley State Park in early September for a few days to rock hound and site see. Can't wait. My husband and I were in Sault Ste Marie last September and had a great time. Anyway, we always enjoy your videos and have learned so much from you over the years.
I've stopped there before. It is beautiful. The bike ride looked really nice too. Maybe someday I'll be able to ride again and do that path. You both found some really nice rocks too.
What a Beautiful Day at the lake!!! I'm a little jealous!! What a fantastic day together, along with the gorgeous weather!!! Thanks for sharing!!!! 🤗♥️🙏🏼

Another nice time traveling upstate with you two! Lots of really nice rocks, but my fav was the fossil you had right before the burger break. The ones I find lower down Huron are hard but look chalkie. That one looked more like stone. I’d love to tumble that, show it to my nephew who is still going strong with his fascination with fossils. Great show, thanks for the effort!
I hadn't heard that the fossils in the southern part of the state were different than the ones up here. I found a few Petoskey stones down by Port Huron and they were just like what I find up here.
@@MichiganRocks , the colors are like nothing we’ve found so far down here. Here they are almost all off-white to grey, some parts shining and the rest flat. No brown that I’ve ever seen, and the detail on your specimen was real nice, vivid and deep looking. A keeper for our team. We (my 9 year old daughter and I) are going to snorkel in shallow water at the north end of St. Clair, at 8 feet, there are some visible stones so we’ll pull them up for a closer look. My wife and our 5 year old will be our land crew, taking rocks up onto the dock above the seawall for a closer look. Should be fun!

It is not a highly populated area of the state and there is a lot of lakeshore to enjoy. We did notice more beach goers later in the day. The weather was perfect that day. We do love life in northern Michigan.
@@MichiganRocks something hubby wanted to do, family coming from CA to photograph the planes, so we’re making a weekend out of it, im originally from Rogers City 😄
Have you ever lost your balance and fallen into the water? With the waves coming and going I think I might but I would love to hunt the great lakes shores for rocks. You are very lucky! Please be careful and stay safe, ❤❤
I was hunting with Wild Kyle this spring and kind of fell on my side but got up quick. I got pretty wet but dried pretty quickly too. That’s the only time I remember, but I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
I have a suggestion for merc. Plastic lined cloth crossbody bag with Michegan Rocks on it with pictures of Petoskey, Puddingstone and other raw rocks all around the bottom or top.
I’m not sure that the company I’m using offers a bag like that. They do offer a tote bag and I think you can customize merchandise anyway you would like. I have a design exactly like you described with Michigan Rocks, a Petoskey stone, and a puddingstone. This was the best I could do with the “customize” tool. This color doesn’t contrast enough with the design, but there weren’t great colors to choose from. michigan-rocks.myspreadshop.com/create?product=742610ef-e1c6-4c55-a65d-66c0d19b1da9&view=1
I started with Paleo Chris, then to Wild Kyle now on over here .I love the videos..Rocks you all find are beauties..I was just curious if you had a store that sells any of the ones you tumble..Keep up the great work..love the waves..GET IN THE WOODS
I don't sell polished rocks anywhere, but I do sell a few things at a local shop. I sell stone crosses, little turtles, guitar picks, beads that fit Pandora bracelets, heart shaped pendants, other pendants, and Christmas ornaments at that time of year. They don't have an online store, but will work with you if you call or email. olivetbookandgift.com
Was there this past weekend, the water was chilly! Found my first pudding-stones, several horn corals and lots of limestone:) Ocqueoc Falls was a blast and chilly too.
Gorgeous day out, and some great finds. That mystery rock @14:45 was very interesting, did you end up taking that home to tumble? Kinda looked like it might not tumble well, but it was a pretty cool rock. Thank for taking us along!
Great video. We were at all those places last week. We found a few small puddingstones and some nice horn coral fossils but your eye is better than ours. Here’s a question- did you ever dump your end-cuts from puddingstones you were slabbing in the water on that stretch of beach by the road just north of Roger’s City? I found one that someone had already cut!
@@MichiganRocks How did that go? I get flat, creamy looking pink and nothing else. Using the standard stuff I learned from you going back a year now? Just set them aside, may use them as skipping stones if I can’t improve them.
I grew up in the middle of Illinois and there were no rocks or minerals of interest, really. When I lived in Billings, Montana for a while, any decorative gravel or any gravel by the Yellowstone or its tributaries had at least a little low-grade agate, at least.
I really hope Nancy doesn't notice that Linda was there. She might get jealous. Taylor and I talked about getting together, but our schedules didn't line up very well.
@@margaretgilbertson1118 I just read all the comments to Nancy and she said, "no harm done". I don't think she's too upset. I'm really bad with names, by the way.
Quick question: Are Nancy's shoes water tennis shoes or just regular tennis shoes that she's wearing in the water? I have been using water "proof" hiking boots and sometimes they're just too bulky. I wondered what I needed to look at when purchasing tennis shoes to wear in the water. Thanks!
They're listed in my Amazon storefront, although I just looked and see that they're currently unavailable. If you look there, though, you might be able to find a newer model. I think they're running shoes that are made for running in the rain. Nancy just wears them as water shoes though and she really likes them.
I built it, but a friend designed it. Here are a couple video about it: Homemade Tumbler: ua-cam.com/video/6qIcK2ZohGM/v-deo.html Tumbler Update: ua-cam.com/video/PAMOCc2BNJM/v-deo.html
Chert is very hard an has conchoidal fracturing. Mud stone is soft and does not have conchoidal fracturing. Conchoidal fractures are roundish, sort of sea shell looking breaks. If you've ever seen a very thick piece of glass chipped, that's conchoidal fracturing.
Here's a hypothetical: can one find a large specimen (like the gowganda tilite at 6:30 ) and legally be able to hull it home? What if someone wants it for their front yard? Can large specimens be collected? Or is part of the BLM rule where one can only take X amount of material that has a weight of Y or less?
You can legally take 25 lbs. of rocks per person per year from state land. Most Great Lakes beaches in Michigan are considered state land. The exception is places like Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores. You can't take any rocks from there.
I can't believe you didn't take the Dad shoes off!! You're so silly. Nanc tolerates you well.😆 Hey, did I dream that you sent me a contact and I was the winner of a Rob treasure? I can't find the conversation, so I might have dreamed it...
You didn't dream it. I spammer was trying to impersonate me. I think I have that one taken care of now. That's the second time that has happened within a few weeks. I could have taken my shoes off, but I was already carrying two bike helmets, Nancy's purse and a camera. I need more hands!
Question: Do you polish rocks people send you? We had a gentleman in petoskey we would take ours too when we would camp. He charged by the size. This year he was not around, either moved or passed away (he was elderly and we had been going to him for years). We usually would have him polish while we were camping but I have sent him a few. lmk or if you know someone, thanks! (Im in Frankenmuth)
Thanks for the great video as usual. I have a question if you can give your input. What do you consider chert and what jasper? When I look them up, it seems that the distinction is that jasper is prettier but they are in the same family. I see you called some yellows chert but reds jasper and was just wondering your thoughts. Thanks!
I went down a rabbit hole trying answer that question for someone a while ago. The more I read, the more confused I got. One thing that adds a lot to the confusion is whether you're talking to a geologist or a lapidary. There are many, many trade names given to rocks that are incorrect too. For example, Ocean Jasper is actually a type of rhyolite if I remember correctly. I was just out rock hunting with two geologists recently who told me that jasper is alway red. I have spent much more time talking with lapidary folks who would tell you that jasper comes in many colors. I've decided to just call the brown and gray stuff chert since that's what I see most people calling it. If you want to confuse matters more, throw flint into your research.
@@MichiganRocks That sounds about what my searching has found, outside of the red vs other colors, I hadn't heard that, so at least that's something. Unfortunately, I don't have any jasper (or any great rocks) near where I live. So, if I am out on a trip looking and I find something that is jasper like and I like the color, I'm going to go with it, who cares what it is called! I knew you would have info, thanks for replying and the continued great content.
I was carrying a camera, Nancy's purse, and both of our bike helmets. Carrying shoes was just a little too much. Also, the rocks sometimes hurt my feet. Wow, I did better than I thought coming up with excuses.
Found the cabs I purchased about 35 years ago from a local rock shop going out of business. Have no idea what they are. If you have a business EM address maybe I cd send pics? This is the only media I do, no FB or IG

I was hunting with Wild Kyle this spring and kind of fell on my side but got up quick. I got pretty wet but dried pretty quickly too. That’s the only time I remember, but I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.
Hello,,, New friend and subscriber from Samar Philippines sending my support Sir,,,,
Thanks! Welcome to the channel!
@@MichiganRocks ty so much!!!
Rocks yea!!! Bikes, that’s too much work!!! Nice video.
We rode quite a bit that day. I was tired!
Was there this past weekend, the water was chilly! Found my first pudding-stones, several horn corals and lots of limestone:)
Ocqueoc Falls was a blast and chilly too.
@@I_wish_I_knew_something Did you go to the Underground Ocqueoc? ua-cam.com/video/Y_Pvt_AlF-U/v-deo.html
Gorgeous day out, and some great finds. That mystery rock @14:45 was very interesting, did you end up taking that home to tumble? Kinda looked like it might not tumble well, but it was a pretty cool rock. Thank for taking us along!
Nope, that one didn't make the trip home with us.
dad shoes and a purse.....looking good
Nancy doesn't have to worry about anyone stealing me that way.
I drive by this beach every day
You should stop driving by and stop in someday. The rocks are kind of small, but if you hunt to the south they get a little bigger.
Come for the rocks, stay for the biking. If you decide to start scuba diving, you’ll hit my trifecta
Snorkeling occasionally, but no scuba diving yet.
Nope, I usually tumble my end cuts.
@@MichiganRocks How did that go? I get flat, creamy looking pink and nothing else. Using the standard stuff I learned from you going back a year now? Just set them aside, may use them as skipping stones if I can’t improve them.
@@MichiganRocks Well, someone was kind enough to share leftovers.
@@berjo77 How does tumbling end cuts go? It works like any other tumbling. I do it all the time and they end up nice.
@@MichiganRocks I meant just the end cuts of pudding stone. Dull. The rest of my end cuts end up easy to polish and look nice.
I grew up in the middle of Illinois and there were no rocks or minerals of interest, really. When I lived in Billings, Montana for a while, any decorative gravel or any gravel by the Yellowstone or its tributaries had at least a little low-grade agate, at least.
That's a spot I'd love to visit someday. We went to some of the big parks out west when our kids were little, but I wasn't into rocks then.
Lots of fossils!!! I wouldn’t puck up the “ mudpuppy” either 🤣✅
Nah, that was sort of gross, but interesting.
That's a really nice hat you got there, Rob?! 😉
My hat was a gift from Cody at Michigan Rockhounds. www.michiganrockhounds.com
Ahhh the RETIRED LIFE👍👍
I like it so far.
Second! I get to rock hunt the U P in four weeks!!
Woo-hoo! (For the rock hunt, there's no prize for second place. I'm not into that "everyone gets a trophy" thing.)
@@MichiganRocks I am probably going to take home a carload of rocks. And thanks to you I even know the names of some!
Rob and Nancy, you could also title this video "LIFE IS GOOD"
It sure is!
Yep!

Great locations! Always enjoy having Nancy in video, your chit chat is amusing🙂
Any plans to team up with Taylor?
I really hope Nancy doesn't notice that Linda was there. She might get jealous.
Taylor and I talked about getting together, but our schedules didn't line up very well.
@@MichiganRocks 😬sorry about that don’t know what I was thinking.
@@margaretgilbertson1118 I thought it was funny.
@@MichiganRocks I bet your wife didn’t! Tell her I’m sorry. I know her name and appreciate the variety she brings to the videos.
@@margaretgilbertson1118 I just read all the comments to Nancy and she said, "no harm done". I don't think she's too upset. I'm really bad with names, by the way.
One of the first to post!!
You're actually first. Congratulations. A little known fact is that each video, I double the value of the prize for being first.
Here is a link and story about the skeleton of the schooner that you seen at the 40 mile point lighthouse on Lake Huron😀.
@@rebeccatelgenhoff3540 I think you forgot the link.
I really enjoy your videos, can you tell us a little about your tumbling cabinet? Did you build it or purchase it?
I built it, but a friend designed it. Here are a couple video about it:

@@MichiganRocks Thank You,
I like video with the 2 of you, nice beach
I like it when Nancy comes along too.
How do you know the difference between chert and mud stone?
Chert is very hard an has conchoidal fracturing. Mud stone is soft and does not have conchoidal fracturing. Conchoidal fractures are roundish, sort of sea shell looking breaks. If you've ever seen a very thick piece of glass chipped, that's conchoidal fracturing.
@@MichiganRocks thank you. It's hard to tell on camera the difference but I understand.
😎 👍🏼
Here's a hypothetical: can one find a large specimen (like the gowganda tilite at 6:30 ) and legally be able to hull it home? What if someone wants it for their front yard? Can large specimens be collected? Or is part of the BLM rule where one can only take X amount of material that has a weight of Y or less?
You can legally take 25 lbs. of rocks per person per year from state land. Most Great Lakes beaches in Michigan are considered state land. The exception is places like Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshores. You can't take any rocks from there.
Were you making your wishes?!
I'm always wishing to find some great rocks.
Tolerate is an appropriate choice of words. 😉
No, I don't typically polish rocks for other people. Sorry.
Was there a reason you couldn't take your shoes off?
I was carrying a camera, Nancy's purse, and both of our bike helmets. Carrying shoes was just a little too much. Also, the rocks sometimes hurt my feet. Wow, I did better than I thought coming up with excuses.
Found the cabs I purchased about 35 years ago from a local rock shop going out of business. Have no idea what they are. If you have a business EM address maybe I cd send pics? This is the only media I do, no FB or IG
I'm not very good at identifying rocks. You'd be better off posting them on an online forum.
