Great video as always James. Also there was the shot in which Snarl shoots Scrapper on his should and the effect wasn't colored in. But like you said, those were the most note worthy errors. What REALLY bothers me is the attitude of younger fans that think these errors had always been there and is why they despise this great animated series.
Yeah, I was always going to make this video, but I sped up the process after reading comments from people slating all the errors in the episode - Frustratingly, Hasbro COULD easily hire someone and go through the episodes correcting everything - Maybe one day! :)

There was a very obvious telltale sign that a sound effect was added by Rhino: there would be a CLICK about half a second after the added sound. Once pointed out, even someone that had never heard of Transformers before could tell which sounds were added by Rhino. The easiest added sound to demonstrate is in the first few seconds of the opening that is in every episode of the first season. The camera zooms to the Autobot symbol on Optimus Prime's shoulder. Rhino added in a crash or explosion sound here, making it seem like Optimus crashed into the camera like Dark Helmet on Spaceballs. Listen right after that and shortly after you'll hear a "CLICK". You'll hear that same "CLICK" after every Rhino-added sound effect. Once you notice it is very obvious. As much as I *hate* to say it, AI would actually help in a fan remastering of episodes, if only to crossreference and assist in color correction between known good shots and actual changes between broadcast and workprint masters. It's the sort of drudgery work that automation is great at. Mind you, people still need to manually sift through footage to flag it properly, but it makes fan efforts far more effective at cost.
One of my favorite errors(not in the video, appears in broadcast and Rhino) is when the Dinobots and Constructicons are fighting, the Dinobots transform, and the Constructicons are looking in shock. If you look close at the scene, Hook(I think) has a strange miscoloring on his eyes. I tend to think somebody dropped too much ink on the cell, cell was damaged, or it was an odd burn mark from a cigarette. I go for the former, mostly because I presume a cigarette's hot ash would've obliterated the cell.
I remember noticing errors in animation all the time as a kid. More so when I rewatched cartoons as an adult. The errors took me out of the episodes so much as a kid. I recall dwelling on the mistakes not understanding how they were made. Now I look at them and chuckle. Batman the Brave and the Bold lovingly paid homage to the ones made in some older Batman or Scooby Doo cartoons.
It’s surprising how Rhino basically remastered not finalized animation. The closest thing to that happening lately is an episode from “The Garfield Show” where it aired at first with literal unfinished rendering CG, numbers & timestamps usually seen in behind the scenes animation included. One of the errors that first pop into my head from this episode is when they accidentally animated Prime carrying his trailer in one scene when it’s supposed to be Hauler doing it in said scene. In the original airing they fixed it by simply recoloring Prime in his truck mode orange.
Its here! So weird that this episode of all episodes was butchered for the DVD release, despite having some now iconic anime creators behind it. They must have still had copies of the model sheets sent to therm by Marvel/Sunbow and used them as a reference for these characters. Which does make sense, as these were the designs also seen in the Japanese dub of the show. Scramble City is an interesting one, as it features a few faces relative to Season 3, interacting with characters from Seasons 1 and 2. Heck, they even had Chip Chase in one shot. :)

8:19 Again, that is not true. The Constructions WERE released in the UK in the early 90s by Hasbro's subsiduary Milton Bradley. I know this because I bought Mixmaster from a toy store in Glasgow. It was the original version with the green colouring and combining parts, not the European non-combining yellow versions (which I also had).
Yeah, I completed this video at the start of the year, prior to our conversation! :) - Regardless, I hope you enjoyed the rest of the video...I can never quite tell! :)
I, likewise, got a Long Haul around the same time! But I believe it's generally understood that this release of the team was a "grey market" import of the then-current Chinese reissue, rather than an "official" Hasbro move.
Worth noting that the Chinese Constructicon reissues were actually imported and distributed by Hasbro UK, along with four of the Mini Vehicles, although they were otherwise functionally "grey market" imports since Hasbro UK didn't otherwise didn't do any coordination alongside the new early 90s releases. Other Chinese G1 reissue imported figures around the time (basically anything apart from the Constructicons and Mini Vehicles) were genuine grey market imports through an independent distributor, Kingsley Page. In any case, those releases were years after they were originally skipped, so it's true to say that there were no contemporary releases of the Constructicons during the classic G1 era in the UK.
@@ChrisMcFeely - Unless my memory is playing tricks on me, even the UK Transformers comic made reference to the Constructicons, Swoop, the Deluxe Insecticons, Roadbuster, Whirl, etc., not being available to buy! :)

Those DVDs are vital - Also, those are the very same encodes I use in this video...and for an upcoming very special three part video in a few months! :)
Anyone else notice that the alarm in the scene with the Dinobots confronting the Constructicons (the background low-pitched one, not the higher pitched alarm) sounds exactly like the alerts on the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Motion Picture? Since when does Sunbow/Marvel have Star Trek sound effects in its library? I know Filmation does (Star Trek TAS after all), but did it get shared around or something?
I don't know about this sound effect in particular, but they frequently used sound effects from Star Wars. As in, literally recorded from the Star Wars movies. In one instance you hear a TIE Fighter sound effect followed by a snippet of Darth Vader breathing that they didn't properly trim out. And I think you can also hear C-3PO start to talk after a laser blast sound. (I think from when the droid was blasted in Empire Strikes Back.)
What a brilliantly put together video. You've got an instant subscribe from me. Maaan....I remember those four minutes of Transformers each day on Wackaday - that used to annoy the heck out me as a kid ( especially as I waited to record each segment on VHS ). And when they eventually finished the season, instead of showing season 2, they recycled season 1 yet AGAIN!!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video AND that you've subscribed - Thank you! :) - I actually talk about how that first episode "More Than Meets The Eye" Part 1 was broken up into those five minute chunks when originally shown on the Roland Rat segment of TV-am here - ua-cam.com/video/d2oCWugPYR0/v-deo.htmlsi=n28Bh_y7eVBVywnA&t=262 - Also, if you get a chance, check out the voice recording sessions on this channel from "Transport to Oblivion"...:)
I've got copies of the Japanese DVD release of the series. Even those copies have severe videotape degradation on some episodes. Season 1 is better than most, though. The main problem with those is that they're edited for time. The Japanese absolutely needed to have openings and endings at 1:30 each.
Yeah, I've used clips from the Japanese DVDs on my channel...and, on occasion, had to source clips from the UK DVDs (which used the broadcast masters) to insert the missing clips...:(
@@cerealgeekTV Yeah, it really seemed to me that they spent 90% of the effort making flashy menus (that were still sub-Beast Wars level quality) and then said, "Oh, yeah, we should probably start working on the actual show," and lazily slapped things together without even looking at the final product.
@@KasumiKenshirou - I got really frustrated at some of the outtakes that stated "missing efx" when anyone who knew anything about Japanese animation knew that those random lines in the second season introduction sequence were stylistic choices! :)
Excellent video my friend! Always love seeing behind the scenes footage from different studios as well as what went into its release! I do have a question for you though, I remember a while back that Shout factory promised to fix and correct some mistakes from rhino videos released... yet kind of didn't... especially since they advertise that Starscream would be his corrected colors and oftentimes wouldn't. Did you make a video covering that by chance?
They only fixed the extra errors that were added in Rhino's releases. The errors that were always present in the original broadcast of the episodes remain. Marvel/Sunbow had more time with season one to send the errors back to be fixed in time for the broadcast, they didn't have that luxury when it came to the other seasons, due to the sheer volume of episodes, so the later seasons have many errors in them..some more than others. They could all be fixed pretty easily though if Hasbro could be bothered to invest in such a project but I can't see them ever doing it at this stage.
To add to the previous reply, Shout was just promising to use the broadcast masters, which contained the fixes that were made back in the 1980s. But they were not going to pull a George Lucas and make new fixes. One positive change that Rhino made was with the episode "War Dawn". This episode was, for some reason, ended up being slowed down in the version that aired. Fans wrote in to tell them about this speed error and Rhino actually corrected this. They also corrected the misspelled title, "A Deceptacon Raider in King Arthur's Court". When Shout Factory announced they would be releasing their own DVD sets, fans debated as to whether Shout should fix the "War Dawn" speed issue and the misspelled "Deceptacon" title like Rhino did, or leave them as they were when they aired. (I don't actually remember how that turned out.)
@@KasumiKenshirou No, Shout sadly reverted back to the pitched-down broadcast audio for "War Dawn", even though they were informed about the issue (on their public forums) before they got to that episode. Shout were also warned about several other items to watch out for, which they ignored, such as using the correct opening credits for all the parts of "Five Faces of Darkness"; what should have been a simple task somehow resulted in them using the correct opening on only a couple of parts. Plus, there were a bunch of missing lines from Cosmos in FFoD Part 4 which were included on the Rhino release but missing on other home video releases of the episode. Despite this being specifically highlighted on the Shout forums, the lines were missing on their eventual release of the episode, even though they could have easily been reinstated.
The broadcast masters were released on DVD. The UK Sony Wonder/Maverick releases included these (though the complete series set only had Rhino's 5.1 sound mix), I'm not sure but apparently the US Shout! Factory releases apparently kept the best of both versions, whatever that may be. I guess they hopefully used the broadcast master of Heavy Metal War and Not the 35mm film version as that would make sense, but I can't confirm that right now. Maybe they did, but still a couple of moments from the 35mm film prints like the slow down scene of when the Constructicons names were being called out? But I can confirm the Sony Wonder/Maverick DVD's were of the Broadcast Version and the individual volumes (the ones with the episodes in the wrong order) also had the original sound mix. Though I guess you knew all ready, as you used those DVD's from Sony Wonder/Maverick for this video, at least I assume that's the case. The corrected footage had the boulder suddenly disappear for one frame before Megatron teleports to Prime (16:06) ah well, it can't all be perfect, plus it's only a single frame. Still, I bet you had fun working on this video, it's like bringing to life one of your earliest essays fro the magazine and yeah it was awesome to hear you wax lyrical about Toei again, it's always awesome to see Pero in all his 80's glory. Though if the animators were working with robots still, they could have also been animating for Video Warrior Laserion at the time, as well as Fist of the North Star. ;) :D (Oh and Rhino are officially the Remaster Bastards, pardon my French). :D Yes James, the Constructicons were released in the UK.
Yeah, I really wish Maverick had been allowed to release all seasons of the series before Rhino came along..but Maverick also messed around with the opening sequences & closing credits for some of the episodes. Who knows why they did this but it was really annoying. I wish I'd kept all my recordings of the series from Sky back in the day.
@@TF80s Maverick only had the license to Season 1, Rhino thought the 35mm film prints were of higher quality because they were film prints. They of course were wrong. But now we don't have to worry about them as they no longer have the rights, but their successors Shout! Factory do.
@@David315842 All Floro Dery did to modify these existing designs was to remove wheels from the robot modes of the Autobots and redesign Megatron's head to more closely match the final toy, as the original Megatron animation model was based on an early prototype. But only Megatron's HEAD was changed. Other elements of that prototype version of the toy, such as the gun barrel ending up on Megatron's back rather than at his hip, remained in his animation model. You can see the pre-Floro Dery models in a piece of animation that was used in very early ads for the Marvel comics and the toys that you can find on UA-cam. In this commercial, Megatron has a black head that is shaped differently, Soundwave is colored a VERY light blue for some reason, and the Autobots' wheels don't just magically disappear in robot mode like they do in the TV show.

@@KasumiKenshirou yeah, I've heard about that.
The sound effects libraries were pretty much used universally...as I've discovered over the years! :)
@@cerealgeekTV I remember that video and being very glad I lived in the USA so I didn't have to put up with that nonsense!
@@KasumiKenshirou - Ah, you kind of got used to it...and soon enough the episodes were released to VHS anyway! :)
I've seen errors in the characters' voices in Transformers and TMNT, they are so hilarious!!! 🤣🤣
It's always a fun thing to spot! :)
So why weren’t the retakes also done on 35mm? Were they filmed on video?
The retakes were done on 35mm, but sadly, those reels (to my knowledge) have never been unearthed...:(
I've got copies of the Japanese DVD release of the series. Even those copies have severe videotape degradation on some episodes. Season 1 is better than most, though. The main problem with those is that they're edited for time. The Japanese absolutely needed to have openings and endings at 1:30 each.
Yeah, I've used clips from the Japanese DVDs on my channel...and, on occasion, had to source clips from the UK DVDs (which used the broadcast masters) to insert the missing clips...:(
That DVD menu, though 👌
And if I recall correctly, the next release (season two volume one) had a fully rendered 3D Optimus Prime - I think he even transformed! :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video - In answer to your question, it appears that many others beat me to it! :)
@@jont4130 which lines were missing from Cosmos? Are they included in the episode Hasbro has up on their channel?
Prime's model of course comes from the same artist as Laserion (with a few changes additions by Floro Dery).
@@KazuyaMithra Really? That's awesome. :)
Man these are incredible! What are your sources if I may ask? How did you manage to find alternate versions of scenes that were never aired? The changed teeth, the red trailbreaker, there's so much stuff I've never seen!
The material for the 35mm reels comes from the very Rhino transfers I spoke about - If you ever get your hands on those DVD sets, the errors are impossible to avoid! :)
@@cerealgeekTV I feel like an idiot. Of course. Thank you!
Who is the giant holographic Autobot?
He was never given a name back then - But, without looking, I'm sure that he's been given an official name over the last decade or so...Hasbro name everyone and everything...helps protect their copyright(s)! :)
@@cerealgeekTV because if it is the case. the giant holographic autobot is the only G1 in animated that has never given a toy. I mean even the Bot bot that the students created with a combaticon brain was given a toy, though vague.
Those where the days Roland Rat the saviour of TV-AM, before he went off to the BBC. Then we got the Wide A Wake Club and Wack a Day. Those where the days the golden age of UK kids tv.
Also is the company Rhino still in existence. Hopefully is has been bought over and it's branding ended up in a skip.
Yeah, Rhino still exist - I will say that I thought their original DVD release of the movie was GREAT (I still actually own it over two decades later)! :)
Sort of. Yes and no. The home video department of Rhino still existed, but they are now known by a new name; Shout! Factory.
Pinky Punky: Mr. Mallett, Mr. Mallett. Have you ever heard a rhino shout?
Roland Rat: Yeah!
Pinky Punky: I was asking Mr. Mallett.
They took the best (imo) looking episode of season one and turned it into something even AKOM would be ashamed of..Here's the G2 version of this episode which used the original broadcast episode footage...none of the awful animation errors which were included in the dvd version are present. ua-cam.com/video/FRzv3RhMTA0/v-deo.htmlsi=JA01PY0dRv3XDvvz I wish Hasbro would put up the correct episodes onto their YT channel instead of the Rhino dvd versions.
It's VERY frustrating that Hasbro, a company that seems to be very communicative with its fans, doesn't hire someone to go in and make create/edit/restore the episodes - That's what's happening...slowly...with He-Man and She-Ra! :)
@@cerealgeekTV Yeah and lots of the errors could be fixed quite easily with some clever editing so there would be no need to re-colour or re-animate most of the the scenes in question..which would mean a much less expensive process for Hasbro, which should make them happy.
Thanks, John! :)
@@cerealgeekTV your welcome bro.

Also really loved that you used Golden Boy as an example visual. 🫡😄
Golden Boy is such a fun series...but THAT episode is a wonderful love letter to animation production! :)
Thanks for the love, Dennis! :)
