      Opacity changes the opacity of the layer and the effects, but fill only affects the layer. Blending modes can vary quite a bit based on if the base layer is transparent or not.

    • @WakenerOne
      @WakenerOne 6 років тому +6

      Alar, that's what everybody says, but it CANNOT account for the differences in what I dubbed the Crazy Eight modes. You will notice that in the examples, he didn't even *apply* any styles to the layers. That's what makes these "crazy." With them, the Fill produces a different effect than Opacity even when there are no styles involved in the active layer.
      As far as Photoshop is concerned, there's no such thing as "transparency" in the base layer (technically, in the active layer either). All Photoshop knows about the base layer is the numerical values of the pixels (and it only knows them in the Photoshop Standardized Values (a number between 0 and 1.00). And all it knows of the active layer is the same thing. And all a blending mode is is a mathematical operation performed between the two values to produce a third value, the blend, which is displayed. Fill and Opacity are supposed to be a second blend mode which scales the blend back towards the base (excepting the effect of styles for Fill). And in all the other modes, that's precisely what we see--but NOT with the Crazy Eight.

      Opacity changes layer's visibility. Fill changes layer content's transparency.

    • @devcowpb
      @devcowpb 5 років тому

      It changes blackness/whiteness of that layer. More creative effects can be achieved leaving FILL at 100% and using adjustment layer to control blackness (clipped to dodging/burning layer). With CURVES you can even control midtones which is not possible using only FILL.

  • @WakenerOne
    @WakenerOne 6 років тому +6

    I KNEW THIS!!! in fact, I'm wondering if a comment I left last week about a blending modes video of yours might have inspired this video! I talked about a presentation I did on Blending modes, and how in my research I discovered that these 8 modes you list, which I dubbed "The Crazy Eight," were the only modes where using the Fill slider produced a different result (layer styles notwithstanding) than the Opacity slider, but NOBODY online seemed to know WHY. Everyone says that the only difference between the sliders is that Fill does not affect styles, while Opacity does, but the Crazy Eight *prove* this to be incorrect. Crossing my fingers for a future video which explains this.

    • @manalabedeen4096
      @manalabedeen4096 5 років тому

      WakenerOne hey can you link me to any article or a website explaining the crazy eight modes?
      I just started out on photoshop and would like to learn more
      Thanks in advance :)

    • @WakenerOne
      @WakenerOne 5 років тому +1

      Manal Abedeen, hello and thanks for asking! Unfortunately, I could never find a source which actually *explained* why they functioned differently than the other modes. I contacted a couple of the web sites I used to research my presentation, and while a couple of the authors of those articles noted that mine observation about them was correct, and they said they would look into why this was, I'm not aware of anyone who published subsequent explanations.
      My final product was basically a talk and a slide show-a very *extensive* slide show-for the Akron Camera Club. While I have all of my notes, outlines, and images from that presentation, I have never organized it into an article for publication on the club's web site (though I have been asked to). In any case, *I* don't explain the differences either (though I do have some graphics which show the differences between using the two sliders at the same percentages without any layer styles). All I know is that IF, as so many claim, the *only* difference between Opacity and Fill is that one affects layer styles while the other does not, then in the absence of layer styles, doing the exact same thing with either slider should produce the exact same result . . . and for these eight modes, it does not. If *you* come across an explanation for this, by all means, let *me* know! That might be what gives me a reason to revise and reorganize that presentation into an article.
