  • Mudroom & Bathroom Episode 2: DIY Waterproofing Tub Shower Walls - Today I am waterproofing the bathtub shower in the mudroom bathroom. I am using Mapei Aquadefense and XFasten Fiberglass Membrane Fabric Tape. Before waterproofing, I taped and mudded (with modified thin-set) the joints of the cement board. All the studs around the shower were furred out with ¼” strips to allow me to install the cement board over (in front of) the bathtub flange. Then I caulked where the bathtub meets the cement board and where the bathtub meets the Ditra floor underlayment. I then applied the fabric tape embedded in Aquadefense on all the cement board joints and corners. After all the joints were done, I rolled two coats of the Aquadefense on the cement board.
    This is a DIY project. I am not a professional!!!!

      You can! There are so many good video tutorials out there. Just watch a few of them and then give it a shot.

    What a joy to see another capable woman! Most women doing DIY are such airheads. You make me proud, gal! Also very glad to see this MAPEI product. I did not know they made a waterproof sealant paint.
    MAPEI is an Italian company. I love their Polymer for Thinset Mortar and Grout Maximizer sealant for grout that rubberizes both and ensures no cracking, no water leaks which is especially good for an RV application. I have to do my RV bathroom and here comes MAPEI to the rescue again! None of the tiles I installed have ever popped out of my RV despite the vibrations.

    Very cool seeing a woman that’s handy doing this. I’m currently redoing my bathroom and at the same point you are at. The only thing I did different was putting the cement board on top of the tub lip instead of shimming all the 2x4s. I fiber tapped and cemented the space at the bottom. This way my cement board meets up evenly with the sheet rock.

    Never sit backer board directly on bath rather on lip to prevent durock from getting wet , tile then goes on bath minus grout line to caulk

      It appears to be 1/4 off the tub and thus the sealant was pushed into that seam. Looked like it was done right to me.

    I’m not 100% sure the membrane material for the seams is required with this product. I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt anything though.

    Nice job! I wish my wife could have done it for us XD. Question: is necessary to put fabric tape over waterproofing layer?

      I am sure there are several different ways to do it. After researching, this is the method I settled on.

      Can the liquid waterproofing cure properly underneath the fabric tape?

    Hi, I’m gonna do this on Monday. Did the aqua defender stick well to the silicone? I’m debating between silicone and polyurethane sealant for my wall to shower flange gap.

    • @CountryGirlLiving
      @CountryGirlLiving  Рік тому +1

      It will not stick to silicone. The Lexel caulk that I used isn't silicone. Honestly I am not sure what it is, but it is paintable, and the waterproofing did stick to it. Hope that helps.

      I think I used one and a half. It has been about two years, so I can't remember exactly.

    No primer before Aquadefense?

      I don’t believe it calls for a primer, redguard does though I think.
