  • In this video we discuss how to calculate or compute GPA (grade point average) in an excel spreadsheet by hand. We go through a detailed example step by step
    Transcript/notes
To calculate gpa, grade point average in excel, you need to know 3 things, the grade received for a class, the numeric value or points of a grade and the semester hours or credits for each grade. For the points of a grade, typically an A is worth 4 points, a B is 3 points, a C is 2 points, a D is 1 point and an F is worth 0 points.
And I have noted that here on the worksheet.
First, we need to calculate the number of points received for each class. The formula to calculate this is the number of points for the grade received times the number of semester hours or credits. So, for class 1, we have a grade of A, which from the scale is worth 4 points times 2 semester hours.
To calculate this in excel for class 1, we left click on the answer cell, cell D2, so it is highlighted, then type in an equals sign. Next, in the scale section, we left click on the number of points for the grade received, an A, which is 4 points, so left click on cell B10. Next we type in a multiplication sign, which is shift 8 on the keyboard. Now we need to left click on the number of semester hours for class 1, which is cell C2. Then we hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 8.
Now for class 2. We left click on the answer cell, cell D3, then type in an equals sign. Next, again in the scale section, left click on the number of points for the grade received, an c, which is 2 points, so left click on cell B12. Next we type in a multiplication sign, again shift 8 on the keyboard.
Now we need to left click on the number of semester hours for class 2, which is cell C3. Then we hit the enter key, and we have our answer of 6.
I am going to go through the next 3 classes, using the same process, as you see on the screen. And we get 9 points, 9 points and 4 points.
From here, we need to add up the number of semester hours. To do this quickly, left click and hold on the top cell, cell C2, then drag down over the last cell, cell C6, and release the click and hold. Next, go up to the autosum icon, in the editing portion, near the top of the worksheet, as you see here and left click on it. And, we have our answer of 15.
Now, we need to add up the total points received. To do this quickly, we will use the same process as we just did. Left click and hold on the top cell, drag down, release the click and hold, then left click on the auto sum icon, and we have our answer of 36 total points.
And to finish, to calculate the gpa, we divide the total points by the number of semester hours. So, left click on the answer cell, in this example, cell D11, then type in an equals sign. Next, we left click on the total points, cell D7, then we type in a division sign, which is a forward slash in excel. And then we left click on the number of semester hours, cell C7. The we hit the enter key and we have our answer of 2.4 as the gpa. Which is a solid C on the grade scale.
