    Other than moving it around I worked with drywall one time and one time only. I was a teenager and some guy hired me to help with a job. I get there he has me shoulder pressing the drywall from a ladder and holding it in an isometric 3/4th locked out position causing the most unbelievable burning, pain and fatigue possible. Back cramps, you name it. This went on for maybe an hour. I physically couldn't hold the drywall up anymore so he told me to sweep the floor for my rest. After sweeping for a while he informed me that it was time to shoulder press more drywall. I promptly left and never talked to him again. Long story short the memory of this just now popped into my head over twenty years later! I look up how to install overhead drywall correctly and your video popped up first! It's great to see it done right haha!

    Thank you for this video, Shannon. Very helpful video as I got this at a discount from HFreight...no instructions came with it. Assembled it and almost dropped a sheet on my face and on my puppy. He was so scared the rest of the day and not confident of my drywall handling skills. He stayed by the corner near the first aid kit and cell phone the rest of the day like he's capable of helping. Thanks again, your videos are very helpful.

    We used mine to lift and hold in place a big store sign outside .
    We put a plywoodboard on the rack on top to act as a platform for the sign and blocks underneath the sign . The lift under the edge of the overhang raised up and tight solid . The blocksheld the sign up and against the roof 3 foot tall surround wall . About 11 feet up .

    I have hung and finished a fair amount of drywall. Every time I do a big job I'll say, "I'll never do that again!" And then I try again. This lift would help, but after hiring a crew, I realize some things are best to leave for experienced professionals.
    In the time it takes to put the sheet on the lift, crank it up, get it set just right, and screw it in, there are people out there who can have two or three sheets installed.
    Not to knock the video. It would be a good tool for people who can't afford to hire a crew and have the time and maybe some inexpensive or free help.
    But if you have the funds you might be surprised how little it would cost to get your drywall hung - and finished!

    Alternatively either, 2 people hold it up to the ceiling, then one holds the board in the middle with 2 hands and one screws up the board to the point where it holds it own weight. Secondly buy some drywall props, quite cheap and not a big footprint, easy to use on uneven flooring and so much quicker to set up. Takes 2 people to place the board onto this machine so I can’t see why doing it this way would not only save on time but cost of rental as you could carry the props in a small form factor. Great video on a other hand however I believe abit more labour won’t harm.

    I was raised building houses. I'm probably shorter than I should be from all the panels I've held with my head. We never had a lift. Kitchen sponge in your hat made the days better. No battery drills, had to drag cords. No roto zips, just keyhole saws. But, I'd like to have a panel lift. Glad you showed how it works. Young help can't work the hard way. So, I better get a lift. The other guy had a lift. But they found another guy that would hang it. He brought an old lift. I thought, man, that's nice. I know he's had it 20 years. He was our painter when we used to build. He used to spray trim and all with it hung. Come to work at 2am, work till 2pm, be gone in a week, all doors, trim, walls, cabinets, and all. Usually worked alone. Robert Mckinnon I sheeted my garage with 7/16" OSB. I bought one of these and lifted all the sheets up for installation. It worked perfectly. I was working with standard 4' x 8' sheets. The ceiling is just over 10' up. I believe my unit can go even taller with an optional extension kit. Just be careful of that brake. I see these things in the store, cranked up high. I tell them to lower them down. If an unsuspecting customer were to touch that brake while the lift is up, the thing would come crashing down on their head.

    I have been watching your videos and thank you for the great info you give. I have seen few other videos where they use a glue on the studs before screwing the drywall sheet on. I do see you have some plastic sheet covering the ceiling - what is it? Is that the reason you do not use glue on the studs? Any tips on how to use the lift when using glue on the studs?

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  8 років тому +1

      The plastic is a vapour barrier required in most places on exterior walls and ceilings. If you do not require a vapour barrier in your case then apply the glue on the ceiling joists that you will be covering with the sheet. Lift the sheet in place and screw to the ceiling. I personally would not worry about using glue

    Advice wanted! I'm currently using this hoist, but the manual brake keeps slipping on me. It's very difficult to get the sheet right up against my ceiling because the brake slips and the sheet lowers a couple of inches. I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, but I'm imagining that the brake surface is too smooth in some spots. Or maybe I just don't know how to use the machine. I'm going to have to rig something if I can't figure it out.

    You are operating this lift improperly. The base should be turned 90 degrees from the way you have it placed. Then you can stand without ducking underneath the drywall.

    • @duanemckitterick3450
      @duanemckitterick3450 5 років тому +1

      It's not the base that matters. However, the top panel swivels and could have been rotated 180. I won't speak for Shannon but I think he was trying to illustrate the wire hangers that help keep the drywall on. Had it been spun around the viewer would have had a difficult time seeing what Shannon was trying to explain. Regarding the direction of the panel, I don't think there is a proper or improper way. There is only a way for some to criticize.

      Don't worry about it, the thicker sheets hide the ceiling from sagging a little better. Don't think most people notice it when its textured.

    Nice video. I'm getting ready to hang some rock and this tool is a must-have because I'm working alone. Looks like it will work just fine. Thanks for posting.

    Has anybody figured out a good trick to load a drywall with just one person?

      Usually I'm by myself. It is a little more tricky on your own, once you do it a couple times you figure it out

      Still, you lift the whole sheet right?
      Too much. 🏋️‍♀️
      I’ll figure out a way to “walk it up”… gotta be possible.
      Cheers 😊

    @Houseimprovements Great video. What is the reason for the plastic on the ceiling? I thought that is only used for outside walls as a vapour barrier.

      This homes original vapour barrier was in bad shape. We actually removed what we could from up top and then installed this one.

    Shannon why put a vapor barrier on the ceiling

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  10 років тому +2

      Vapour barrier is required on any ceiling that is below a cold attic area. This is the main floor of this house and there is only an attic above it.

      You should, looks a little tricky though. I'm about to do that during the next week or two. Check UA-cam, there is a video showing wall installation with this lift.

    why don't you ever mark center lines of the studs on the sheet you're working on? makes life a lot easier.
