2021 Specialized Diverge // 7 Things You Should Know

- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The Specialized Diverge Sport Carbon is by far my favorite drop bar bike I've ever owned, but there are a few things about it that I wish I had known before I jumped on the hugely popular Diverge bandwagon. In this video, I share 7 things a potential Specialized Diverge buyer might consider before forking over the cash.
Ritchey Beacon Bars:
amzn.to/3bddXGc (40cm)
amzn.to/3tyAofr (42cm)
amzn.to/3tvKI7S. (44cm)
Support the channel and pick up some stickers (and Future Shock spacers if you need them).

And if you're curious about the HUNT 35 Carbon Gravel wheel upgrade:
• Specialized Diverge | ...
Just got this bike yesterday man! Been on a steel frame for a year prior....1300 stock is fine and will do for the time being lol. Changed to alloy pedals though! A must in my book. But as far as everything else this was the best choice Ive ever made on a bike. I'll use it to Commute and have a little road gravel fun on my off days! Great video and very informative for future lockouts! Thanks! 🙏🙏✌
Eyy congrats on NBD! 🎉🎉
How was moving from Steel frame to Carbon Diverge? Is Steel comfortable?
Dude, your channel is so good. You deserve so many more subscribers
Ha, yes! Thanks for the kind words
Another solution for the saddle bag rattle is to stuff a rag or two in with the CO2 cartridges and tire lever and multi tool. And you can wipe your hands with the rags after messing with the chain.
Same wheels on my 2020 Salsa Warbird. It has the more relaxed geometry too. World of difference from my road Caad10. All day comfort.
Awesome bike!
@@TheBikeSauce thanks. The diverge was on my short list too.
I’d have been happy either I think!
@@TheBikeSauce I had to drive over 200 miles to another state to find a Warbird in 56cm. The diverge was sold out within 250 miles around me. Probably going to see a lot of used bikes once (if) Covid is under control.
Ha yea. I’m counting on it.. heh
Hi thanks for your review as I'am in the market too for a diverge, and couldn't decide between the sport and the comp. I rather spend my Euro's on the diverge sport and update the wheels as I do not care about the extra on the comp.
One question about the Hunt wheels. The rims are for tube tires if I am not mistaken? Tubeless tires do not fit on the rim?
No, the hunts are tubeless ready rims. I’ve only run them tubeless since getting them and setup is a breeze
@@TheBikeSauce why do you carry spare inner tube? Have you had side wall flats where a plug can’t do the job? Have you considered Victoria Airliner?
What do you think about the aluminum version of this bike: the Elite E5? Between the Scott Speedster 20 2022 Gravel Bike and the Specialized Diverge Elite E5 2021 (or 2021), which of these two bikes would do you choose?
Ahh. Loaded question. Feel free to chat via contact page on the website. thebikesauce.com Thx!
All 3 videos on the Diverge Sport Carbon are great and very helpful. That is the model I'm considering and it's nice to see videos specific to the bike I want. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thx for watching! Happy bike shopping!
Just stumbled in on your channel. Finally received my Diverge last week after months of waiting. Haven't ridden in many years and bought the bike to help with my running after suffering several stress related injuries related to long runs. I love the bike and can see why cyclists are as addicted as runners. Learning a lot about riding and looking forward to following along.
Happy new bike day!
I got my diverge comp E5 2 years ago, done 7500 miles. No problems fitting stuff in frame trangle with the 64 cm model ;) As you mentioned, the lack of space to mount stuff on the handlebars is a bit of an issue. I also replaced my wheels, now using Roval SLX 24, with x32 tiers instead of stock x30. I probably would get a new Diverge if I had to get a new bike.
Some serious mileage! Nice work! 64cm frame is like having a 6 bedroom ranch house! 52cm frame on the other hand.. studio apartment..
Good miles! Mine is over a year old and I've done over 9k. Never been into water bottles and bags since I'm just a Mtb, I like my camelbacks for riding. Not sure yet on what type of rims to get yet but I want something strong.
How tall are you? Looks like the 64 diverge is the best choice for extremely large riders
Has anyone been able to put fenders on their diverge? If so, what brand did you choose and size tires did you use? Wondering if there is room for fenders still with 42 tires 🤷🏻♂️
As Diverge owner I cannot agree more! All valid points!
I have quite a way to go in weight loss, but once I hit my magic number, the Diverge is in my future.
Goals are great, but be kind to yourself! Either way, the Diverge will be a fantastic gift.
I agree with been kind to yourself. I’m personally not a skinny lad myself but I did get the Diverge Elite recently and loving it.
Right on!
Thankyou and thanks again for telling us your height and the size of the bike and you mentioning that your happy with bike..... thats gold parts of a review in a video.. 👍👍
This guy is awesome
Lots of good info -- why doesn't a company like Specialized hire you or at least contract with you to test ride its bikes? It sounds like a lot of time and money is needed to fix some obvious problems, like the stock wheels/tires and lack of cable damper.
I just purchased the same wheel and tires setup. Can't wait to get it on. I have the diverge aluminum frame, but I feel like what you said is right, I rather pay less for the upgrades I don't really care about and put the money toward the wheels/tires.
Nice! Congrats, You’ll love the new setup
Hi :) This is 52cm? I am 175cm and I am right in the 54cm bracket, struggling if I should get the 52 or 54, because it seems so long and high compared to my old road race bike. The thing is, while I am comfortable with my back, my hands always hurt. So maybe my 52 road bike is too short. even though a bike fitter said it was quite a good fit. I am confused so to speak. How tall are you?
... now that you have used it so much you must be getting old so can i have it then thanks.
What I hate is that I can’t fit fenders on my 38mm tires. I have to drop down to 32mm! Seriously?!?!
Wow, excellent info, with no fluff and so well articulated. Appreciate your video sir 🙏
Yeah this bike is a hybrid with drop bars.
It looks like my Schwinn tourist with drop bars but way better.
On the Diverge Expert since Summer 2020, swapping the wheels for Zipp 303 Firecrest + tires to 43 GravelKing SK completely changed the ride, si did the Enve G carbon bars. Love this bike so much in this actual setup ❤
Excellent overview and explanation. I just bought a 2023 2021 Specialized Diverge Elite E5. I was nervous when I brought the bike home thinking I should have bought a 650B gravel bike. After your review and others, the diverge accommodates both 700C and 650B. Another interesting fact with the 2023 Diverge Elite E5 is I normally ride a 56 road bike as I am 6ft tall. However, my local bike shop said the 58 fit me better than the 56. I listened but was nervous when I got home. After some research, I see what they mean. I went on 99 spokes and compared a few other bikes at 56 and the 58 is a better fit, at least I hope so. In fact, when I put the 58 next to my 56 Cannondale EVO5 and my 1997 56 Reynolds 708 old raod bike, the 58 looks smaller. Unique geometry. My first upgrade is wider tires and just ride. In time, I can get different wheels, etc in time. Ride more, modify later.
Looking to purchase a Diverge this month and hoping to switch out wheels very quickly, please let me know which wheels you purchased when you get them.
Thank You very much for the review!
Appreciate your style of review, please keep it this Style. Attention to details, geometry review and other nuances make this review the one I've been looking for.
PS also nice to see that you're clearly distinguishing between your personal opinion and a general view.
Now I can only hope that you're testing a Canyon Grail CF as I can not decide between it and the diverge 😅
Thanks for watching! Ha, I wish I could have a Grail to test! Just need a few. more. hundred. thousand. subscribers. 🤣
@@TheBikeSauce hahaha! Hope you get then!!! 🔥
Living in Germany I've had the opportunity to try it and it felt race like. However when trying it I knew way less about road bikes and barely had any experience 😅
Gonna look for a specialized dealer to try the diverge and visit canyon again, to decide at some point.
Subscribed. Great effort. Thankyou.
Thx for the feedback!
How can we get more people watching your videos?!
Haha thx. Well the channel is only 2 months old, so I guess.. give it time?
Share this out to your cycling friends
Ha thx!
I have the Comp in 56: can vouch for the seat post, SWAT, and adjustable future shock. Those three sold me, but it's a great geometry all around. Been eyeing those Hunts, the DTs are truly tanks.
Nice work on getting the Comp! What a great spec. Wheels are definitely a weak point though.
How tall are you? I’m 5”11 and Idk if. I should get 56 or 58
Inclined to say 56, but at this price point, a bike fit beforehand may be worth it
@@4greenb get the 56, it's already on the long/stable geometry side. Same height here, slightly long legs.
I have the Diverge Comp Carbon. Some great info here regarding the wheels. Will think about upgrading.
Definitely! Thx for watching
Excellent Video - clear, concise, insightful. I bought the 2021 Expert carbon this Summer, and came to the same conclusion about the Stock wheels....upgraded to the Roval Terra CLX's. I am not sold on the stock tires, the Pathfinders. If you are looking for a new topic, compare the top 5 gravel tires in a future video. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for the feedback, and congrats on an awesome bike purchase! Those Rovals are pretty sweet looking. Comparing top 5 gravel tires is a great idea, but first I'd have to buy the top 5 gravel tires.. Ha!
@@TheBikeSauce Hopefully...this channel takes off for you...and you will have companies sending you products to test!
Too kind. Thanks!
I have 40mm WTB Nanos on my stock DT Swiss wheels. Awesome tires! Great grip on the loose stuff and fast rolling on tarmac.
@@PeterSdrolias Nice! I've been curious about the Nano tires and also some of the Maxxis gravel options.
I have been seriously considering the Diverge, but on the other hand for that price point between the sport and the comp I can get a very well equipped carbon gravel bike with full Grx Di2.
Definitely. You are certainly paying a premium for the brand name with Specialized
The futureshock is no gimmick, it makes a big difference if you are more gravel than road...
And what bike is this?
I’m completely new to gravel riding but so interested. I’m between the Cannondale Topstone, Giant Revolt, and Specialized Diverge. Your point of it being a comfortable upright casual ride as well as being able to hit the trails is very intriguing to me. Would you say the Diverge Base is a great starter bike and more suitable over the other two?
As an entry point, any of your options will be fantastic. Realistically, right now the limiting factor will be availability. I’d say but what you can find and learn about what works for you and what doesn’t. If you somehow find more than one bike in your size/ build/ color choice, then you could break out the pros/cons list. Specific to your question: diverge base won’t be any more suitable than the other 2, but it will be a great entry into drop bar adventure bikes
Same thing here but can’t find any of those bikes unfortunately. I was also looking at the Canyon Grail.
I have a diverge elite 54 and my partner has a small size base diverge. She loooves it I bought mine because of how great hers was
Damn this bike looks small😮
Dude. Glad I watched this. I've been torn between the Comp Carbon and the Trek Checkpoint SL5. At $3,900 its a shame specialized out such a heavy and poor wheelset on that bike. I assumed the G540 would be solid bearing the dt swiss name. Thinking ill save the money and get the trek SL5 at 2,900$ and use the left over money for better wheels! Great video. New sub
Right on! 🤘
Would you use this for a road bike if you were just getting stayed into road biking... seriously asking for my gf. She was looking into the Allez but this had also popped up in our searches.
If she'll only be riding road, and just getting into the sport, I'd recommend an endurance road bike.
What's your view on the Diverge Base Carbon 2021 model? I would like to try the gravel experience and I am unexperienced biker. Is the drivetrain (1x) and other equipments (brakes, shifter etc..) good enough or is it worth considering a higher-end model?
As pointed out in other comments, stock availability is a concern and hence choice limited at the moment.
Base carbon would be fantastic for a new cyclist. ‘Upgradeability’ is not a concern on this bike like it is on other ‘base’ models. So if you find you enjoy it, you can easily customize it to your liking.
One might skip the carbon Diverge frame entirely to afford the carbon wheels and Terra seatpost. Specialized makes great alloy frames.
For sure. Check out @pathlesspedaled new video on the best places to spend money on a bike. Alloy frames have come such a long way.
I have a 2020 diverge comp carbon and a 2021 base model with Claris. And I can say it's a noticeable weight difference obviously lol. Geometry does feel snappier. But also a comfortable bike. I recently bought the new one and put 20 miles on it. In a way I rather this diverge...
You’d rather the 2021 base than 2020 comp carbon based on updated geo despite the weight increase? Cool!
@@TheBikeSauce And less headache in handling during transport, adding accessories which clamp on to carbon. The alloy version unfortunately comes in a 1 BY.
There is one thing worse than rattling tools in a toolbag... the ominous silence when it has snapped off on the corrugations and is no longer attached to the bike!
😆 Well this is just hilarious. Never had it happen, but can imagine the sensation of realizing it's 'too quiet'
Great review, thanks. You're reviews are so important to the community. Those bars however are the ugliest ever. Just hideous.
😆
Aim looking for fender/ mud guard .. any recommendations
Sorry, wish I had more experience with fenders. SoCal is very dry so I don't even own any.
What size bike did you get, Im 5'8 also.
It’s a 52cm. Could probably go 54 if you wanted, but my legs are disproportionately short, so the 52 works better for me
Why are they selling a bike that needs upgrades, like the tires and wheels. Why can we just get the whole package? Your review is very helpful but it's difficult to consider with all the different changes that are needed/recommended.
Thx, Bill. None of the upgrades are required. It's a great bike out of the box but like many cyclists, I can't help but scratch the upgrade itch.
This is interesting about the height of cockpit, you are speaking about. I've measured Topstone (M) and Diverge (54) - from ground to handlebar. Stams in minus position, installed as high as possible. Results: Topstone 96cm, Diverge 94. Diverge has BB height 1,5cm lower than topstone, so "the real" height should be considered as 95,5cm. Still 0,5cm lower than topstone and this is with its uprised handlebar. If you install such a handlebar in topstone, the results would be like 95,5-97,5. So +2cm of height for topstone. I dont get it because Diverge has 18mm taller stack, though a shorter headtube.
If you're not a weight weenie and know a lot about bike parts then it's better to buy a cheaper steel frame and build a gravel bike from the ground up. You can buy way better components and have a frame that will last longer for less money.
Wait til you see the next build! 😀
NIce vid. Our bikes are like twin diverges now that you have the beacon drop bar. I just need the hunt wheels. looking forward to your review on the Ritchey bars.
Nice! Great minds.. 😀
Will post something on the bars soon.
What’s your sizing? I’m 5’4 and considering a 49 but wondering if gonna feel too small.
Great vid. I’m getting a custom gravel steel frame in September and I’ll keep an eye out on the rattling cables. I think I’m going to want that future shock 2.0….
Unfortunately it’s pretty proprietary. Probably can go with a redshift shock stem as an alternative
@@TheBikeSauce Was thinking to hang my custom build on the wall like art and buy a Diverge frameset and build it up with an Ekar 1x.
Just got one today . It’s a real nice bike .
Happy new bike day!
Great video, love your other videos as well. I have same the same bike with about 300 miles on it. My only complaint is the wheels, heavy and soft, dented on my 2nd ride. I told myself I would upgrade anything until I at least go through a set of tires, but I might not make it that long, lol.
I sold my road bike after buying the Diverge, I like it that much!
Nice! Sounds like your experience so far has been similar to mine. Only one drop bar bike in the garage now!
Have had my 2021 e5 comp and really happy with the level I purchased. Replaced the wheels, and honestly have been riding it more road. 35 gravel king SS’s. I zoom when needed for sure, may get a road bike next. Looking team machine or tarmac next , but Last July I went aluminum diverge for my all around bike. Truly versatile. Been on gravel and tarmac. Great bike imo. Can make it road if you want and hang.
Nice!
Recently tried the Sport Carbon in the same size as my road bike, it was way too long, even when I'm in the top of the size according to the brand. Impossible to ride with extreme back pain. That never happened before, even after changing from 26" to 29er, or MTB to road bike... The fit was terrible with this bike...
I work in a bike shop and specialized know about the cable noise. that why they put the same stuff as the jaywire stuff you brought. I guess whoever put your bike together did put it in the frame.
Oh interesting. Yea, there was nothing in my frame when I opened it up. The Jagwire stuff helped though.
@@TheBikeSauce yeah when you unbox a specialized bike there is a box with the owners manual and all the parts to put the bike together. in there should of been that foam stuff. but I will put my hands up and a few times I have forgotten to put into bike. normally smaller frame are better for not having cable/hose noise and at least they do give it. I once put bubble wrap in a customer's carbon bar because I couldn't get any foam over the hose inside the bars.
Makes sense. Yea I have all the parts that came with the manual, except the damping stuff. Bubble wrap is a solid solution, ha!
Great video! I'm thinking about getting a used entry level Diverge 2020 or 2021, but I'm unsure of the mechanical brakes? Where I'm at, the weather will be just as much rain as there's sun, but it's quite flat so the descents will be short and not very steep. Are they "ok" for this type of riding? Is it a waste of money to get a bike with the mechanical one's now and upgrade later? Money, unfortunately, *IS* an object in my case. Any thoughts on this topic are appreciated!
Looks like an old mountain bike minus the dampening, no wonder you go for carbon wheels and expensive cockpit
Single track shredder 💎
I 'shred' at #partypace. Ha!
@@TheBikeSauce party on Wayne 🤙
Party on, Garth 🤓
Great review! What's your take on the 2021 Specialized Diverge Comp e5 vs 2021 Giant Revolt Advanced 2? Which is more comfortable?
Kind of a loaded question, but will come down to geometry. Diverge has lower bb and higher stack. Will feel like you’re riding ‘in’ the bike as opposed to on top of it. Revolt, on the other hand, has higher trail so may few more stable off-road. Handling will not be as quick as diverge, and may wander when climbing at low speeds. I’ve ridden both and prefer the diverge as an all arounder, but clearly both are very popular.
Thank you so much for your input! This really helps! I’ve been torn on this decision for a while. I may go with the diverge! I’m 5’8” with a 32” inseam, what size would you recommend?
Ohh nice, right on the border between 52 and 54cm. I mean, if it helps, I’m 5’8” with 30” inseam and 52 is ideal for me.
@@TheBikeSauce Thanks for your feeding back on this question, I have a Revolt already its great, comfort, stable and fastespecially
Love the video! I love the fact that the bike is more 'relaxed' then most others like you said. I just wish that they were in stock somewhere!
Yes.. this is unfortunate. Keep checking local shops. They get small sporadic shipments
I'm in the process of changing my rear derailleur cable and found out that there's no cable guide inside, I spent about an hour on and off and no luck . Do you have tip you can share?
I am looking also to buying Sport Carbon. All your comments and suggestions are great! Keep up the good work. (Maybe include some shots from your rides as background while you are talking? It would bring in some dynamics to your videos).
Thanks for the feedback. I usually include some scattered riding shots, but perhaps I'll add more in future videos. Thanks for watching, and buy one already!😀
The Bike Sauce No availability in Finland. Small chance in December, most probably February. Anyway we are expecting snow in couple of weeks so no hurries :)
@@FOE7 Hopefully soon! Snow does sound nice - we've been having triple digit weather in California for too long now!
Overall I am very happy with my Diverge Sport Carbon. My only issue has been the stock tires that it came with. The specialized pathfinders are not tubeless ready. While researching what new tubeless tire to get, I've just been making due with the pathfinders. They are very fast when going in a straight line. But god help me if I have to corner on dirt or sand or even on tarmac. I feel that they give no grip at all when cornering. I find myself sliding all over the place. I'm looking at getting 43mm Panaracer Gravelking SK+ and going tubeless and dropping the tire pressure. Hopefully that gives me more grip and confidence on the dirt. Other than that, I love my Diverge. Great bike!
Haha true about the non tubeless Pathfinders. Wondering if you can lower your pressure to gain some traction. Even though they're tubed, you might be able to drop down a bit. Heard great things about the new SK+ tires. And I think tubeless is really a worthwhile upgrade. Thanks!
I am no fan of the stock Pathfinder Sport tires but I set mine up tubeless with Orange Seal. I've had one overnight flat but after pumping it back up, its been fine.
The tires may be heavy, but they are fine tubeless!
@@asthorman Interesting to know they worked tubeless!
I've been running Maxxis rambler in the rear and a maxxis ravager in the front, it may not be the best for the road but if your all about ripping up the local trails it's a great tire setup.
Like those bars along. Thanks for showing footage.
do i use the bike for touring on rough road
Helpful content! Have you tried the Roubaix before committing to the diverge? I want to replace my road bike with a gravel capable machine that still performs on the road. I am torn between the two. If you can’t provide a comparison with the Roubaix, can you maybe get a more detailed account of the diverge performance on the road? Maybe versus your old road bike or the Hakka/stigmata....Thanks!
Funny you ask. I actually sold my Roubaix SL4 to pay for the Diverge. It's wasn't a current Roubaix, but a 2015 model. In exchange for more comfort and gravel capabilities, I was expecting a huge penalty on the paved roads going to the Diverge. However, I haven't noted any substantial sluggishness with the Diverge. Admittedly, I don't ride with a powermeter, but Strava road segment times have not changed. If you are truly torn between the Roubaix and the Diverge, I'd say go Diverge (though I'm clearly biased :) )
@@TheBikeSauce is the diverge more or less upright compared to roubiax? According to the website roubiax has higher stack and shorter reach leaving rider more upright ?
@@TheBikeSauce thanks this was a useful comment. I'm shopping for my fiancé and I think she'll prefer the fatter tires on gravel but also I don't want to get her a bike that feels slow on the road (where she spends 90% of her time). Definitely would get a pair of road wheels if I go with the diverge, wondering if Roubaix would still noticeably outperform after that though.
Unless seconds matter (races), the diverge won’t hinder road performance .
Fantastic and very practical overview 👏 thanks so much for the feedback, will really help me refine my purchase decisions
Best unbiased review ever! Thank you!
Great video! Nice to see someone talk about some of the stuff most people gloss over or don't talk about on what is a truly great bike. Also if your a Mtb guy like me there's the flat bar version of this bike that is just a blast to ride. Also I completely agree about the rims, sure they will get you by but I myself am definitely looking into upgrading the wheel set. All I really need is some downhill thick tires cause I keep wrecking tires 😅 guess I shouldn't ride this as hard as i do my Mtb.
Ha I’ve seen the fly bar diverge too. Seems a bit too dad bike for me, but what ever works!
@@TheBikeSauce dad bike 😅😅 guess that's fitting for this old rider.
Haha just messing. I’m a dad too. I’ll probably be on a flat bar diverge in a couple years.
@@TheBikeSauce both types are a lot of fun. I spend most of my time trying to fix a creeky bottom bracket but that might just be my knees lol. My biggest problem with gravel bikes is the tires. I can't seem to find a strong enough tire, I just shred rear tires and often get a rock to punch a hole into them. I wish someone would make their tires with a thicker casing. My poor stock rims have a few dents in them now from blowing out a tire.
Dang. Hardcore, man! Lotta brands have a ‘plus’ casing or ‘endurance’ casings which are much stronger than normal. Might check them out
I like those Ritchiy handlebars. Super review. Well thought out. Subscribed.
Yes! Thx, John
Are those bars venturemax?
Hey, I’m just curious. Do you ride a 52 in every bike you’ve ever had? I know 58 is just over the recommended height for that size and I’m 5’8 they deposit on a 54 cm to me the 52 feels very small, I was just standing over both of them today . May I ask what your inseam is
Inseam is short. 29-30” I could probably ride a 54, but I’m used to the smaller frame - much easier to control for me
What stem are you running? And is it “flipped”? I think they come installed with negative rise.
Stock 90mm stem I believe. It’s set for positive rise
Thanks! I have a Specialized Diverge on order. Should be here any day now. But it’s the Elite E5. Would love to see a review on it.
Wish I could get my hands on one
You are the Man! - excellent review! I wanted a Diverge but settles for a Lynskey GR PRO with GRX 810 - loving it. I got the. hunt X-wides on order with oil slicked spokes. Thanks so much!
Awesome set up, and super bling wheels! Nice.
Great review. I’ve ridden over 1000m on my Diverge Sport Carbon on both gravel and road in the past year. I am newer to biking but so glad to hear your pov on the tires. I thought it was just me! I’ve been training for my first Century and it’s been a challenge on the Pathfinder Pro 700x42 tires and DT Swiss G540 rim tires that came with the bike. Just paid for a new set of carbon wheels/30-32c tires for when I plan to go on the road alone. I hope it was worth it and won’t be too hard to switch the wheels out.
Nice! Wheels and tire upgrade will make a noticeable difference! However, going narrow tire won’t necessarily help on the road. Enjoy!
frame bags are for chumps
Something I wish I would have known before buying my Specialized Diverge Carbon 2016 is that it was designed for SCS wheels. So the best upgrade that could have been done became considerably more difficult and I mean the wheel upgrade... Really annoying!
looks like Women MTB
Cya in 5 years when the futur shock is dead and they don't make parts for it anymore :')
😢
I would figure that by then like most people that I know you would have another new bike by then.
Im a welder. i will figure out how to lock that shock out. Lol. i agree though
Trying to decide on which size to get. I’m on the middle of size 49 and 52. May I know your standover height? Would help me a lot.
About a 29" inseam. Standover on the Diverge isn't a big issue, since the top tube is so slanted.
One thing I wish I knew to consider for this bike - have enough money to buy it
Ha! That would go in the "7 Things You Already Know" video
Are you able to give a detailed comparison between this bike and the Topstone 1 in terms of the ride position?
I don't ave 1st-hand experience on the Cannondale, but I'd recommend comparing geometries with bikeinsights.com
Great vid - I’m looking at purchasing one of these and this was very helpful!
Thanks for watching. Happy bike shopping
Hey I stumbled across your channel trying to decide between either a Diverge or 3T Exploro RaceMax, great video & very informative. Subscribed
Thx, Steve! Wonder what you decided?
Thanks for the interesting and insightful review. Just got a carbon comp. I got it for mixed road and trail riding and for multi-day bike packing trips. Can’t wait to put miles on it!
Congrats! Happy nbd
Totally agree on the wheels, the G540 are mediocer at best. Once I got Roval Terra CLXs on my Diverge Expert it was totally clear the bike really is awesome, but with the stock wheels simply not so much. So if you plan to get a Diverge, indeed opt for one model down and get good wheels, you wont regret it.
Oooo roval terra .. drool.. haha
Hi man .. thanks for the informative videos .. on your last video you said your bike size was 52, and I was wondering how tall you are? I’ve had a bike fit and it seems I am 170 cm 5’7 and it appears I land in between 52 & 54. I have the option of getting a good deal on 52 size frame.
Thanks 🙏🏾
Oops.. just re watched your video so .. 5’8 on a 52 size bike.. so I suppose I should be alright on a 52.
I think so!
I'm a little confused on the future shock. Is it worth spending the extra money to get the 2.0 version on the Diverge Comp, or is the 1.5 good enough for the normal riding from a road to a hard packed gravel rail trail?
Haven’t ridden both. Although, I’d say the comp may worth it for the additional upgrades like swat and the terra seat post.
Has anyone thought to give a heavily custom fortified Diverge to Brandon Semenuk and ask him to see what he can huck on it? I’d very like to see how a Diverge handles MTB terrain.
Lol great idea.
Quick question. What kind of Panaracer tires would you recommend if I ride 50% road 50% gravel? Thanks in advance 👍
GK SK all the way!
@@TheBikeSauce Thank you! I love your Hunt carbon wheels. What do you think is a good non-carbon Hunt wheels that are good enough? I just want to replace the stock wheels that came with the Diverge.
Rattling, use bubble rap...stop wear , and silent.
Definitely an option, but can be tough to feed through a tiny frame access hole
Can you share the link for handlebars? Wider flare ought to give more control?! Also uniform thickness gives more mounting freedom?
Would you prefer 31mm or 21mm (give or take in both cases)?
Link in description now. The idea is wider drops give you more control. 21mm isn't a standard diameter, unless I've missed a new standard.
@@TheBikeSauce An 8 year old bike had around 22 mm. I have no observations otherwise.
The more I watch your reviews, the more you stand out above others, for offering straight forward valuable knowledge.
Well that’s high praise 🙏🙏
@@TheBikeSauce Your fine content has encouraged me to become a subscriber.
Did you say in another video that you have a PRONGHORN handle bar bag? If so, which size?
No that wasn’t me. I did just get a Lead Out! bar bag though.
@@TheBikeSauce Nice! Thanks
Good review... I've just ordered the Diverge E5 2021. I went for sizing and visit two different Specialized Concept stores.. one said I'm between a 56/58 and one said I'm more of a 58 frame size.. and neither sounded too sure. I'm 5"11 and I ordered a 58 frame size online as was the only available size. Have I made a mistake? I'm worried it might be too big... any thought or advice from anyone? Thanks
Did you physically sit on both? If you're truly between sizes, many fitters suggest sizing up. Ultimately, it's down to preference. Whichever felt better is the right size when you're between sizes.
@@TheBikeSauce thanks for replying back, apprechiate it. No, they did not it in stock. İn the first Concept store I sat on 58' gravel (different one) and a 56' road and in the next concept store on 56' gravel which against was a different type. So has been difficult to work out which one to go for..
I have the comp carbon for a month now. Future shock 2.0 ist really nice, the grx clutch does it’s job really good. Really looking forward for some „transalp“/more-day-bikepacking tours next year. Are you planning to put some bikepacking gear on it and do such trips?
I’ve got a frame bag and a bar bag now for day trips, but with family obligations, it’s tough to get out for multiple days right now
What size frame are you riding?
52cm
Doesn’t the diverge have tool storage in the down tube?
Only starting at the comp level. Sport and below don’t get the swat box.
I’ve just bought the diverge elite e5. I got the 54 and I’m 172.5 cm tall. I could possibly have gone down a size but didn’t get to try both . Considering what to do tyre wise - go tubeless? What width?
Also what about future shock and suspension seat post additions ?
I like your tip about the saddle bag. I found my was noisy on my hybrid when I went on bumpier stuff .
Happy new bike day! I’m about the same height and I am between sizes too (52/ 54). I’ve been on a 52 lately and enjoy it.
For tires, tubeless is a good option and I’ve adopted the wider-is-better mentality, unless it’s a pure road bike (unlikely since you bought a diverge). I started on the stock 38mm widths and am now at 43mm. I have some Rene Herse 48mm width tires on deck and I have a feeling I’ll prefer those.
Regarding future shock - I’ve got a bunch of vids on it, but in short, I like it and am frustrated by it at the same time. You may consider going redshift stem and seatpost if you need some extra squish.
I’d say for now, enjoy it and slowly identify gaps or areas you’d like to change, and go from there.
@@TheBikeSauce I’m 5’8” as well with a 31” ish inseam. Curious to know why you went 52 over 54. I’m in the market for a diverge but don’t want to get the wrong size. Any insight on why you picked 52 over the 54 would be greatly appreciated.
I like to get rowdy in the dirt and chunk. Prefer to have more control over the bike. I had a 55 long ago and that wreaked havoc on my knee (too big)
Whats was the drop handlebar brand?
Ritchey Design
I bought a 2021 Diverge Pro Carbon. It was a covid lock down antidote. It was red and I had to have it. A wonderful smooth ride and I get a kick out of the Force ETap group set. I was upset with how out of balance (are true) the wheels were when spin up on my stand; a real hop. I balanced them with split rubber vacuum hose for now.
I have a 16° bar flare which I love and this allowed me to mount my mirror low and inside my bar width.
Baller!!
@@TheBikeSauce ...I'm old...is that a good thing? Lol
Yes, I believe ‘baller’ carries a positive connotation. 😀
I've been looking more at this bike, though the Alloy Comp E5 because grad student budget. I have a steel, fully rigid tank of a bikepacking bike that can go just about anywhere. But, as comfortable and reliable as it is, even for commuting, its a beast. Looking for something more along the lines of road-adjacent/road-friendly gravel bike since here its flat with a lot of farm roads. How does the diverge play with the combination of that slacker HTA but short chainstays? Does the frame have dropper post routing?
Nice, the E5 is a great option. I also fondly remember the grad student life, so I feel you. As for the geo, it’s been great on just about everything. It’s relaxed, but not unwieldy. The hta doesn’t really slow things down in terms of handling. Perhaps on steep climbs it does tend to wander a slight bit, but not bad. You can run an internal dropper if you want.
@@TheBikeSauce Qualifiers in 7 weeks and finish in ~3-4 terms, depending on if I have to cancel another summer of field work due to Covid. That will add to the timeline substantially. So, maybe a strange question but, how does it feel when you shoulder it for a hike-a-bike? The internal routing eliminates one major pressure point, but does the toptube have any sharper angles that dig in?
I actually run a frame bag most of the time and never really carry over shoulder
Which cool helmet do you wear there ?
Don’t know about cool, but it’s a Smith Network MIPS in matte gravy
