I have thought about the format a lot and the only fair solution is on Monday have the 5 seed host the 6 for a winner take all game. Then on Tuesday the winner plays the 4 seed for a winner take all game. Wednesday you have the 2 play the 3 to start divisional round and that Thursday it’s the 1 seed vs the winner of the wild card knockout. That way 3 days is the most a team has off. This brings back the excitement of the Monday and Tuesday of the wild card round.
most of it has to do with catching hot teams in the postseason. For example, the Phillies were mid for a while after a blazing start. The Mets were the opposite
This has been known for quite some time
Right I'd say the last 30 games matter more than who is the number 1 team. Clinch early and start cooling off and you're going to run into a hot team and get your teeth kicked in.
People only whine about this when their favorite team loses. The Phillies have been average since the all star break it has nothing to do with days off. The Yankees clinched just fine.
The Yankees clinched, but there was definitely rust in the first few games. This has been a discussion for years and it really does need to be fixed. Playoff baseball is not baseball. I guarantee if you polled the players, the vast majority would rather play than rest for 5 days.
I have a fix.
Use the final week of regular season as play in week for wild cards while the top seeds are still playing so less rust but would be meaningless games too but less of a layoff
Final week:
6 vs 5 winner plays 4th seed final weekend
But but those games count for regular season so you could still win your division with overall record if it’s close but the cut off for wild card seeds is game 156
Bottom seeds have to win an extra series and division winners get a proper length series without the rust
Now this should plant the seed for more flex scheduling in the season, make the final 3 weeks flex for top 8 seeds and have 3 weeks of playoffs style regular season to determine top 4 seeds with a 7 game NLDS is my preference
But first we make the final week flex play in week, would be great for tv $$$ less afternoon games when people at work or school
156 games:
56 division games
60 vs other 2 divisions
40 interleague games (it’s stupid anyway unless it’s a marquee matchup on summer or warm city weekend)
I think you need to shorten the time off that the "bye" teams get. Baseball is about momentum. He's right. I think you need to push the wildcard round back down to a game a piece.
I like the expanded format with more teams making the playoffs. But turning the wild card series into best of 3 has proved completely pointless.
Almost every series has ended in a sweep. And as far as the few that havent been. The team that won the first game was the team to advance. We have yet to see someone lose the first game and win the next 2.
2015 Mets swept Cubs, had days off, and then looked flat in world series vs. Royals. You can't get rid of all days off.
I'm a Mets fan and I'm here to tell you they weren't beating the Royals that season. I knew it before the series even started. The Mets weren't good enough offensively and in the bullpen and the last thing you want is to face a team that was in the World Series the year before and lost in the way the Royals did. The Mets never had a chance in that series, whether they had time off or not.
Phillies were .500 for the second game of the season. Mets were something like 13 games over .500. They split a 4 game series at the Bank and the Mets took 2 out of 3 at Citi. It wasn't 5 days of rest that knocked out the Phillies. They got beat by a better team.
But that's the point, Phillies were cruising to the 2 seed, you don't find it weird that they made it to the WS and NLCS as the WC then only win one game as the #2 seed?
Mets beat the Phillies in September, taking 3 of 4 a few weeks prior. Phillies didn't get 5 days off before that. Phillies are just a streaky team that couldn't get it together. That's how they lost to the Diamondbacks in 7.
@@AG-fv4ybnobody thinks it's weird they lost.
@@stevenl9151 why because it's the Phillies?
if the 1 and 2 seed got something else idk wat else but something
what if the first and second seed get to pick who they play against after the wild card?
The Braves insane offense last season was a surprised, they struggled. I think they should just make the wild card games a 1 game to reduce the rest.
Having 2 wildcards was a stretch, having 3 is an embarrassment and degrades a 162 long season. Such a money grab
If the Yankees or Dodgers make it to the WS, it'll be a moot point. If not, it'll be a big topic in the offseason
The only thing about the dodgers is the rotation has been horribly injured the last 2 years, definitely think the 5 days off is affecting the players because the all star break is only a weekend
Easy fix....16 team playoffs (8 per league) with teams ranked according to their record (you can still put division leaders in but they may not be 1,2,3, for example NL central winner might have the 5th best record and thus they would be 5th seed). Teams 1-3 pick their opponent. If top seed loses in first round then pick a better opponent next time.
The only ones that complain about the playoff format are the top seeds who end up losing in the DS to a wildcard team grow up the playoff format has nothing to do with who’s losing and who’s winning that’s on the team and their preparations. This is the playoffs bring it or go home. The Yankees were the number one seed in the American league and they’re heading to the American League championship series so there’s no excuses. The Phillies just ran into a hot Mets team at the wrong time live with it deal with it. Your offense became anemic and your bullpen pitching was pathetic. That’s it.
Thank you Hunter Pense for calling out this format for being garbage. I don't like it at all. I think that in order to fix it you need to expand to 32 teams. I personally would split the leagues up into four eight team leagues and let the winners of those leagues in the post season. But if you want to expand to sixteen teams is also a good way to address this.
all the top 2 teams are still in other than the phillies... and the mets are just better than the phillies have been since june. i dont understand why everybody is going nuts.. padres have been better than the dodgers too. and if cleveland and dodgers win the game 5 then all the top seeds are in except the phillies..
@Casey4242 People are just making excuses for the number 1 and 2 seeds. I agree with you, Casey. This format didn't stop the Astros from advancing these last two years. Or the 2022 Yankees
Make the DS 7 game series.
Melvin couldn't work with Preller and Zaidi (worked with previously). If Melvin wanted more control, should have put it in his contracts with Padres, Giants. Melvin had the seniority in negotiations. If we wanted complete control over the F-lineup up, would have been easy to negotiate. Whined all season about injuries and SP.
I agree that it is a disadvantage to the 1s and 2s. It has to be tweaked. There needs to be a clear advantage to the teams that would have essentially been the only ones that made the postseason before the Division Series round was implemented compared to having the Wild Card these days. It's gone too far. And that is coming from me as a Texas Rangers fan who rode that wave to become world champions last year.
Either make the NLDS a 7 game series or i saw jomboy propose the 1 and 2 seeds get a one game advantage, so they start the series 1-0
@@AG-fv4yboh god hell no the integrity the game
@dwaynebanks4194 i was a bit iffy about it too but I really haven't seen any other options. One thing my buddy and I came up with is throw more teams in the playoffs, no bye week. 2 more teams on each side, 4 wild card series
@@AG-fv4yb if the first two seeds lost people would still complain
@dwaynebanks4194 funny enough, when it was used in 2020 the 1 and 2 seeds won lol
they should just do seeding with no bye week
If the Dodgers ran the table in the postseason, that would be boring for everyone.
Just stop making the 3rd division winner play the wild card round. Make it like NBA Play-In where the bottom 2 wild cards do a play in game and have the winner play the top wild card for a wild card game 4 seed. It's hard to win a division in baseball and it's hard to see your team in the 3 spot not even make the Division Series for Division winners.
Make the 5-6 seeds take the bye?
lol
Dumb take. If I told you you didn't have to waste your rotation and bullpen on a 3 game series you'd take that every time.
It seems unfair because its like expected that no.1 seeds are moving forward
This is such a result bias. The mets and braves had to play a doubleheader after everybody else was done playing. If they both get bounced in the wildcard round everybody would've shrugged and said 'hey that's baseball'. Stop crying
He just sounds like sour grapes. If one if his teams won do you think he would be complaining? No, he is only complaining because his teams are no longer in the playoffs. Yankees series against KC was tough but they won just fine. Yanks had 5 days off but scored 6 runs.
Ain't gonna subscribe
if you have injury's on the 1 2 seed team's you have time to heal......injury's on wild card you are screwed.....so it's all a crap shoot..
MLB is going to add more teams in the playoffs. 7 teams per league. The 1 seed in each league automatically advances to round 2
Tired of the excuses. Be better some teams don’t have issues with it. You gotta have the grit to win it all
Terrible take.
