You wouldn’t think twice about the names of most places. Some are just a bit harder to pronounce, and others might cause you to raise an eyebrow. But the names we give to places - even the seemingly weird ones - convey their significance and history and, more often than not, a sense of identity.
Following Dutch and English exploration with Willem Janszoon, James Cook and Matthew Flinders, Terra Australis Incognita was colonised and became known as Australia.
Several of our place names reflect this colonial history, but other place names reflect an older history - that of Indigenous Australians.

Mount Dissapointment takes me back to my primary school days. My primary school had an ICT Lab built in 2010 and the Northern windows had uninterrupted views of Mount Dissapointment. A slight head turn to the right and then there were also uninterrupted views of the Dandenong Ranges. Was cool to see the mountains just about every day for 6 straight years

      There's a name for this.

i assume you are an aborigine; i know an asian girl who considers herself to be a coloured person; she says she doesn't need white apologists speaking on her behalf; personally, i don't think i am white or negroes are black, (we can be negroes just for one day!); we all have a touch of colour about our skin.
the word that puzzles many is 'nigger'; were 'blacks' called that before the word was recognised as being a colour or after; i try to name people by the country they come from, ie, you are an australian, not an aussie or an abbo.
      all the best.
