Q&A Slices: Why might my nib feel scratchy mid-sentence?

  • Sometimes my nib will write smooth and then scratchy all in the same sentence. Why?
    - usually that’s misaligned tines, especially if it’s scratchy consistently in the same direction
    - using a loupe, you can inspect and usually see if the tines are misaligned and actually bend them back
    - there could be some other kind of damage going on, if it was dropped, ruined by someone who borrowed it, etc, and a loupe can help inspect
    - it could be something you’re doing while you’re writing, like changing your writing angle or pen rotation
    - sometimes this is harder to figure out because you aren’t necessarily aware of the writing habits you naturally do (since it’s natural, you’re not thinking about it)
    - a really well-used nib could have a flat spot worn on it, and you could be catching the edge of that flat spot (we’re talking years and years of writing though)
    - solution here would be to regrind/smooth it back out
    - nibmeisters could definitely do it
    - you could, it’s not hard, but without knowing what you’re looking for you could make it worse, pretty easily, use your judgment
    - it could be there’s a little catch on the inside slit of the tines, can sometimes happen with nibs if that step was missed at all at the manufacturer, can fix that yourself but you can baby’s bottom it if you’re not careful!
    - any nib smoothing or adjustment, do at your own risk!

Thank you for the refresher Brian.

Hey, Brian, does the Opus 88 Demonstrator come with an Ebonite feed? If it doesn't, how difficult do you think it would be to get/make an ebonite feed for the pen? I just ordered one because I love the look of the pen, but I also have a Noodler's Charlie and I've fallen in love with Ebonite over my other pens with plastic feeds.

i got babys bottom on cheap pilot varisities from new. i ground it away and made a wider nib, and loved it. This is my first experience with fountain pens. Im definitely gonna get more latter down the line. Im thinking a Lamy joy 1.1 with some grayish ink. I dont really want to invest in paper since im using them for school and i wont really have a say in the type of paper i use then on anyway most of the time.

My pilot fountain pen is totally different. It's the exact opposite of the situation of your pen. The top of the nib tine isn't polished.

Part of the fun of using fountain pens is messing around with the nibs. When I first began doing this I bought some £1 pens from Amazon. Now I have some cheap Chinese pens that write beautifully after being smoothed and even re-ground.

This is happening to me but most of the time, but there is no misalignment or anything like that. I was only cleaning my pen

That way of grinding one part at a time to create kind of a baby's bottom but not really... Hmmm... back to my spare Lamy nibs... I already ruined a couple of those, and the sensation is exactly that, becoming scratchy out of the blue and then back to normal, but too subtle to be a misalignment, let's see if I can bring them back to smooth writing.

Get yourself a tempered glass plate and do figure-8s with moderate pressure.

I have an old Cross pen which I believe has the issue of one tine being sharper than the other, that's what it looks like with a loupe anyway and has the same symptoms. I don't feel comfortable with the micromesh nor have access to it. I don't have access to any places that would do repair (in the UK). Is there anything else I could do? Any help is apreciated

AAwArchie™ sorry to say it but not much else you could do.
There are places in the U.K. thought depending on how valuable your pens are you could see

or the battersea pen home in Epping www.penhome.co.uk/

A piece of very smooth, tempered glass. Just do figure-8s on the glass with some moderate pressure while the pen is inked up. It'll get rid of that bur better than with micromesh and increase the capillary action a little bit at the paper while smoothing it out.
