Love this video. Another tip I would suggest is to listening to poetry reading. Hearing the poet read their own work really get the feel of it. They may even give content about what inspired the poem.

I totally understand what you’re saying. With poetry it feels like you are actually diving into the meaning of a passage. You have to intentionally work at understanding it. Unlike fiction and non-fiction where most of the time it’s meaning is laid bare.

I loved the video! I think going in with the open mind is so important. We are so used to classic poetry that we were taught at school that some people are confused by modern poetry and refuse to give it a chance. But I’ve seen some modern poets whose works are just as meaningful as a work by someone like Pushkin or Shakespeare.
Yes! I agree with everything you said. It’s sad that elitism/gate keeping turn off people to reading poetry. It should be universally enjoyed!

Good stuff. Another way to understand poetry is that the world at large triggers emotion in the poet who then transfer that emotion to the reader via figurative language.

Very well done. You are right about the taking poetry seriously. I think of people start with an open mind and MAYBE try to find themselves or a connection to the work....it may have a deeper impact. The next thing is not feeling a certain way if they don't get it, be willing to reread.

Awesome video! Im definitely starting to get into poetry myself. Nayyirah Waheed’s poetry definitely opened the doors for me.
Thank you! Nayyirah Waheed is the first modern poet I read, and her work inspired me to share my own writing on social media. She’s definitely what I consider a “gateway poet” as her work is profound and has the ability to get her readers more into poetry!
Good place to start is Perrine's book, Sound and Sense. Very helpful.
I've been wanting to get into poetry. I love Sylvia Plath's work and after reading her journal entries I decided to read her poetry too. I bought her collection but just never got down to sit with it and just read. I always kept thinking how I don't get poetry and that I'll probably not get the message but you know what your video really helped a lot. I think I'm just gonna enjoy the work instead of fretting about it lol. Thank you, this video was very helpful. 😊❤️

I sit with a dictionary open and try to understand, since English isn't my first language. But I love the art of poetry
I’m horrible I understanding poetry Sometimes our teacher gives us passages and it’s about poetry and I suck at that but overall I’m good at reading and go to comprehending stories just not poetry

I just write and rhyme the words and write what i feel i don’t know if it’s what is considered poetry? maybe i’m just journaling and rhyming..

What is the aim of a poet in a poem.
usually to shed new light on a common/shared human experience. but ultimately this question varies depending on the poet
Seems obvious that poetry is meaningful to enough people that it has endured for centuries. But I don't get it at all. It does absolutely nothing for me.
I'm guessing maybe it's kind of like music, I can't exactly explain why I love music so much ...I just do. And I feel bad for anyone who doesn't get anything out of music.
I imagine poets must feel similarly about me.
And yes, I know that a lot of songs are poetry set to music.
I so agree. I've been studying poetry for the past 2 years, and it's just never done it for me. Partly because I just don't find joy in unpicking language and trying to gauge what the poet is trying to say. Maybe it's because we've been studying Donne XD I don't know. Music for me doesn't need to talk
