The Devil In I is one of the, I'd say, three songs that really represent the war inside us individually, dealing with the depression that came after losing Paul, dealing with the anger, the guilt… just trying to get our hands around the grief process, basically, and realizing that we have to let ourselves feel these feelings before we can move forward, and The Devil In I represents looking at that selfishness in the mirror and saying, 'Okay, I have to let myself feel this before I can go any further.' -Corey Taylor
@@CoachCastTV to elaborate a little on this, I find that a lot of metal music is theraputic in the sense that it explores and expresses aggression that is very often if not always taboo in society. It can be pretty liberating to listen to something that matches your mental state so to speak. that you would have to just hold in otherwise. I think metal has an image of having mostly young male fans, but every person on Earth experiences frustration and aggression so you'd be surprised at the diversity of the actual fandom. That being said, the music videos do lean into horror and gore a lot for some reason. I guess shock value works in marketing? Not my cup of tea either, even if it somewhat furthers the point made.
@@CoachCastTV and it doesn't just work for negative emotions, it's great when endorphines or adrenalin are involved too, like getting a new job or working out 😁
*This is a quote from Corey Taylor - 'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself.. Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest things you can do, is to give into that side of yourself, and that you can have fun. Basically, this video is about finding past devils, past things - becoming one with it and then doing away with it." The video itself is also based on their own personal fears. One is afraid of birds so he's eaten by them. One is afraid of not being able to use his hands so he eats them and can't DJ anymore, etc etc.. I know it's gory but hey it's Slipknot! But there is a story behind the gory.*🤣
The song is a very graphic representation of getting rid of your regrets and other devils that are in all of us. Getting rid of the old you so you can move forward
I love that you guys finally did this video. This video definitely did have a deeper meaning. This was the first video they did from the album and prior to this album being released, there was a lot of heartbreak, negative feelings, and controversy within the band and so this video was a form of rebirth for them. Paul Gray, the bassist, had died and then Joey, the drummer, had been removed from the band amidst some controversy over how it actually went down. The two in the wheelchairs were the new members to the band and their stabbing scene was their “initiation” into the band. This is also why they’re not shown playing their instruments until after that scene. For the rest of the members, they got to choose how to depict “the killing of their demons” so you had Sid, the DJ, eating his hands because that’s how he makes his living and what’s afraid of losing the most. Then there was Mick who has always hated his appearance so he was tearing his face off. Chris is afraid of birds, so he got killed by them. And of course Clown chose the most over the top way he could think of by setting himself on fire before hanging himself.
Some of their actions are symbolic. The devil in I and Sid for instance, biting off his fingers because those are his gift and what he uses as in his music. Same with some of the others.
Ok so... my take on this song is initiating the 2 new players, Jay on Drums V Man on bass.. those are the 2 in the wheelchairs getting stabbed, almost an initiation/cleansing to be reborn into the band The rest of them are maybe facing their fears? Corey - Writers block (blank page) Jim - explosions Craig - dogs (we know he's scared of dogs) Chris - birds (we know he's scared of birds) Sid - losing use of fingers/hands (as he's a DJ) Mick (something to do with his identity, as he never really shows his face where he doesn't have to) Shawn (fire/hanging) Well that's what i make of it anyway! I'm sure fellow Maggots will shed any light or their own ideas on this.
A lot of people posted some of the meaning of the video, but left a lot out. The brutal stuff in it is deeply rooted fears and facing them. Like the guy that ate his hands, that is his greatest fear, losing his hands or the ability to use them. His whole life revolves around his instrument. The guy that rips his face off is the fear of being 'no one' without the mask on. The one with the birds all over him is terrified of birds, etc, etc.
Tbh, Mrs Coach's reaction and expressions is pretty much what my colleagues have whenever they walk in at the forge and i'm at my bench, playing slipknot and hyperfocusing on whatever i'm working on. A mixture of mild horror and bemusement 😂i'm guessing my expression matches when the guy who loves easy listening disco and late 70s pop (shudder) has his music on
This is probably the best Slipknot song/video for Halloween, other than Psychosocial. So glad you guys did this one, perfect "Trick or Treat", all about expressing ourselves and what we feel inside!! This is a shock to the system if you're not familiar with their videos, but absolutely love your reaction, that's what us fans hope for. Btw, my costume this year (the Spit It Out Corey Taylor, mask and outfit, also featured in this video at the desk) was a big hit with my friends and at the Halloween party.
Haha happy horrific Halloween to you two. 😂 I think this is probably the most brutal of their videos as I recall. So you handled this one, you'll be OK for the rest.
When you realise your mental health has been eating you away from the inside for a while and that the devil inside isn't an enemy so you can give yourself permission to be yourself and the better version of who you are. It's an uplifting song of self forgiveness and a re-birth if you will.
Part of what makes slipknot slipknot is the horror factor, the band members are horror fans and it makes sense when you see all of the visuals coming from slashers. A good live version for this song is the 2014 knotfest USA show. I just realized that you've never reacted to any slipknot self titled song so a good one can be (sic) either a live version or a lyric video. If you go for the live version you can go for the OG slipknot Dynamo show from 2000. That's some of the wild stuff they did back in the day
I'm so glad other people said it - but yes, the video is based on each individual's fears. It's obviously gruesome and unpleasant to watch, but at least for me, the imagery of putting their fears into a song about the devils inside each of us makes this one of my favorite Slipknot songs!
if you don't really watch or listen to SlipKnot, this video is a baptism of fire. But big respect to you and Mrs Coach for watching it all the way through and i hope that Mrs Coach's Dinner stayed where it was
I love AKITA DOGS !!! THEY ARE BAD A$$ !!! Had a mix with CHOW DOG...SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL... BEST FREAKING GUARD OVER PROTECTED DOG I'VE EVER HAD... GREAT JOB GUYS!!
to me its a metaphor for doing whatever it take's to kill the darkness inside. not really killing your self. love the artistic way of doing that. just there style. love your video's.
It's probably been said, but the music video was filmed based from an interview of all the members and how they wanted to die. So, they filmed a cinematic on just that, which is why the video is more brutal than the song.
A couple of points other than the deeper meaning people have explained. The masks are changed each album cycle. In this video the old masks (white jumpsuits) are being killed off and replaced with the new (blue jumpsuits). One other neat fact is that the two being stabbed in the wheelchairs were the two new members essentially being "jumped" into the band.
Same maggot that loved Mrs. Coach's fungus reference few Slipknot reactions back. Also a Pink Floyd fan that would rather listen to the their The Wall than watch their The Wall. Hearing the music sans visuals allows more freedom for personal connection to the music vs. how the visual component will only hold your hand to see something better left to the imagination. No complaints here, keep up the work maggots also enjoy lyric/live versions.
Nice reaction the vdeo is about there fearest way to die of each one what they fear and yes thereis one live version knottfest or day of el gusanocheck them out take care you 2
Try out "Halloween" by the epic German speed metal band 'Helloween' Do the live Pumpkins Reunited version from 2017 at Wacken, all 3 original singers, 3 guitarists - a supergroup almost of the band (still touring as a 7 piece!) I first listened to them in 1986 as a 12 year old - changed my musical direction!

I really like your channel, especially with Slipknot content, it does a reaction to the song the Dying Song. I'm here from Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷
Also, if memory serves, and at this point in time it may not, each of the ways that one of the band members perished is their own fear being portrayed in the video.
Video theatrics has nothing to do with what this song is saying. Basically two people who can't seem to make it together anymore, using eachother for eachothers gains. And as far as i'm aware on the video, from what i've heard is that the dude you see eating his hand, ripping off his face, being blown up,,,, whatever it's supposed to be their depesest fears. So yea, just artistry, but also the song meaning is fantastic.
Mrs Coach gonna have nightmares before sleep try to something thats nice, I watched an horror movie and slept right after, the ghost came in my dreams 😨
Good content, folks. Love discovering new reaction channels that are good because you know, most are shite but here we are. New sub. Keep it up. Love from Scotland.
And it all started out so great, with the beat, and the vocals that were actually clear enough to understand.... but I'm afraid the imagery was too much for me. I'm with Mrs Coach. Too gross! I got to six and a half minutes of your video, and I'm giving up. Now I need a quiet sit down, a drink of water, and some soothing music... 🤷

Wow, that's deep, and we figured there was some kind of meaning here, although admittedly the visuals were our focus. LOL Thanks for that!

Wow. This is such a creative and artistic video with deep meaning.
You have to admit, Corey Taylor probably has the most dynamic voice in metal today. Possibly of all time.

The imagery is stunning. What a way to express that meaning!
The imagery is just for shock factor just to make people take notice and talk about it, which you are, so therefore it works.
