    Also, there is Assaf and Awassi breeds for milk from the middle east I heard they tolerate warmer climates

      Yes, thanks so much for sharing those breeds! The 3 I talk about in this video are very European-focused and I love that there are other options out there, too!

    You should search for awassi. They are hardy and with fat tail can manage lower energy intake on occasions. The fat tail helps to offset the shortage of feed. They are heavy milkers too. They are from South eastern turkey and Northern Syria, where its super hot and dry in summer and it snows in winter with frigid cold temperatures.

      Thanks so much for sharing this, I have heard of them before but haven't had the chance to find any locally. Will keep an eye out! :)

    Thank you. What's the hardiness like for British Milk Sheep?

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery

      It's hard for me to say since they were the first sheep we had and I don't have anything else to compare to personally. Right now we have some Lacaune sheep, alongside our British Milking Sheep and they seem to be holding up in a very similar way. I'll have more to report back on in a year or more perhaps?

    Any idea about hair sheep that are great milkers?

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  2 роки тому +2

      I haven't personally milked them but plenty of people also milk Katahdins. You can milk any breed of sheep, but it's a matter of how much milk you'll get for your efforts. If you were to find some Katahdins that were extra prolific (like they lamb 3-4 sheep each) then they will likely be high milk producers, to feed their babies. :)

      I’ve heard that Finn sheep are decent milk sheep. The wool is suitable for sweaters and shawls and a dream to spin. It has luster, drape, length and relatively nice softness.

      @spunstricken9065 thanks for the response, but I'm not interested in wool breeds, only hair breeds. Too hot in my area for wool sheep.

    I've never been around milk sheep before, only wool sheep. Thanks for the great information. What breed do you raise?

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  3 роки тому +5

      We had British Milking Sheep with a bit of East Friesian mixed in.
      There are places a few hours away that are starting to have purebreds for these different breeds, but for our purposes we aren't as focused on the specific breed as much as hardiness and temperament too. :)

    Hi, thank you for this video. May I ask you hich of these breeds is the triple-attitude you are referring to in the description?

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  2 роки тому +2

      The first two are the triple purpose ones: East Friesians and British Milking Sheep, because they are great for milk, meat, and wool.
      Lacaune has shorter wool, but still great for milk and eating - and if you get a mix of Lacaune with other breeds you could also get good wool as well. :)

    Hi, great video!! How resistant are the British milking sheep to parasites?

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  Місяць тому +1

      I would say it depends on management more than anything. At first we had a lot of issues, but then we started using copper sulfate as a free choice mineral and now we really don't have problems with parasites like we did in the first few years.

    You did my awassi and assaf wrong! 😩 lol
    Just kidding, I know they’re super rare and people would likely have to travel across country to acquire them… but you should totally reach out to Ms J and Co to get some assaf footage so you can do a video featuring them. Just an idea :)

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  2 роки тому +2

      Ooh yes, I think that's a great idea! There are so many other breeds that are worth exploring, these tend to be the most commonly available ones that people can look up near them. I'm going to do my best to find some more footage and do a follow-up sometime! :)

      @@waykeeperfarmandnerdery oh I know, just teasing! I’ve read a little bit about what Icelandic owners say about their dairy qualities and I think there are some milky lines of Finn’s. So yes, I agree, like you said there are other breeds people sometimes use. Even clunns. I hope one day the assaf/awassi bloodlines are a little bit easier to come by!

    Which sheep breed is good for Indian climate for milk purpose

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  2 роки тому

      I don't know what breeds you have available locally. A good idea would be to find someone who has dairy sheep or farms that focus on sheep and see if they have any ideas for local options. Good luck!

    How about valais blacknose sheep? 🐑 🤔 do they make good dairy sheep? I tried googling it but keep getting meat & wool

    • @waykeeperfarmandnerdery
      @waykeeperfarmandnerdery  Рік тому

      Sorry I don't have any experience with that breed. If you're not finding much about it, it's possible that it's just not bred to improve milking.

    Holstein Fresian cattle are not as hardy, just like the East Fresian sheep. I believe it is true generally for any species... Think Cornish Cross chickens or Broad Breasted White turkeys.

      Thank you so much for sharing this breed - I'll need to do a bit more research into it, but at first glance they look like really lovely and adaptable milking sheep!
