- His boyhood dream come true, a treehouse of magnificent proportions, built amid the jungles of Adventureland. Today it's called Tarzan's Treehouse, but once upon a time it was the home of the Swiss Family Robinson. Yes, this video is a re-upload but it has been entirely revamped, with new narration, music, photos, video footage and better editing. Enjoy!

NOTES: at 8:40 I did not say "grammerphone". I said "gramaphone" but the music hit a note at the exact same time. It was unfortunate timing during editing.
After we visited the Tree House back in 64, my Dad was inspired to build a 3 level tree house in the grove of large Eucalyptus trees in our back yard in Altadena with a six foot ladder that transitioned into stair steps linking the three different levels all with 4 ft high safety rails. My friends and I all at that time spent many hours up there and even had campout sleepovers.
I would have liked to see that treehouse. As far as I'm concerned, no proper childhood is complete without a treehouse.
@@mikehughes4969 I am hoping my sister in going through old photos will find pictures. It was awesome. 1st level was about 15 ft up 2nd about 20 and top about 25ft. The grove was removed in the 80's by the new owner. Ah but the memories
I'm glad the Magic Kingdom version has kept its Swiss Family Robinson theme.
Recent trip to Disneyland confirms they are indeed returning it to the Swiss Family Treehouse

Great job, Alex. I remember climbing those stairs as a teen in the early seventies. I believe Disneyland without Walt has lost some experiences that were unique to him. Commercially the park may still be a success, but it has lost its soul.
Kinda sad, William. It’s true though. Without any imagination in Walt’s Park today, and the outrageous greed that accompanies it , there is really not the sense of discovery and wonderment that used to be there.

I loved the treehouse. I made my family climb it every time we went to Disneyland. I always wanted one of my own in my backyard. Even though it was a walking ride so to speak, I got so much fun out of it as did my cousins and friends.
Thanks Alex, I have fond memories of the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse. Especially the water wheel. The way it carried water to top and provided running water for clamshell sinks blew my mind as a child.
Yeah, why they removed that fantastic feature is beyond reason. Idiotic executive decisions.
I feel pretty fortunate that I was able ro experience Walt Disney's version of Disneyland...

Love this... Great job once again... Although i dont remember the swiss family tree house, Tarzan's treehouse has a warm place in my heart... Its amazing, although not a huge ip, it definitely adds to the charm Disneyland has and the asthetics to Adventureland...

Thank you for this terrific video. I learned a lot about the treehouse that I didn't know before, and I have a greater appreciation for it now. I wish I could have seen it in its original form. The idea of a water wheel powering things throughout the entire attraction was really clever. It seems to me that Tony Baxter doesn't get enough credit for all he did to preserve Walt's vision. Thank you, Alex, for helping us remember what makes Disneyland such a special place!

Alex "As Always" your narration is great, your voice draws the viewer into the story, Really... No matter what the theme of the treehouse is, it will always be a great walk-thru. I just wished the water wheel was left in, it made the tree a little more dynamic Thanks as always to Alex The Historian for his hours of work.......

Great video as usual you really have a talent for making these. Love those little gems of Walt Disney. I found it interesting that the tree was built with pipes that are used for oil rigs and that years later the larger Tree of Life at Animal Kingdom was build out of an oil rig.

I was on the original in '73 and a decade later in '83. Not sure why they needed to change it for change's sake, it's a treehouse, not a mechanical/electrical ride. Thanks for the vid.
Because it still required lots of money in maintenance, and by the 1990s, not as many people were visiting it, because it hadn't changed at all since it was installed in the 60s

Wonderful story telling as usual, Alex. I remember climbing the original. The one thing that stood out in this video for me was the fact that the steam was chlorinated water. It makes me appreciate the algae effect all the more.

I'm sad they're now taking the Tarzen theming away. That was the last Disney movie I saw growing up with my Grandmother and it always made me think of her.
This Video Channel's series of theme park subjects has provided a great public service to me and saved myself untold amounts of money that I don't have to spend on the 'Disney Empire' anymore. This Disney Treehouse Travesty is just an example, Disney is so willing to trash their own nostalgia factor. When "EuroDis" and their other failures cause the management to panic, they always cut their own throat and start cutting the stuff that has the quality within it to save them. This treehouse proves it.
"Swiss Family" was an excellent movie and kids would enjoy it along WITH their parents. Now everyone can wait until the next replacement tree or they just tear the thing down. Now I know that I do not have to waste my money to visit my old Disneyland with false hope that the quality of the past and Walt's dreams are in any way preserved. I'm glad I saw the Treehouse one last time a long time ago.

I don't think they would ever bother moving it, but it could be put on Tom Sawyer Island
@@AlextheHistorian I think your right, but if I was to move it I would consider removing the Hungry Bear restaurant and put it there.
Hungry Bear earns them a lot of money, they wouldn't remove a successful restaurant to put in an expensive treehouse that barely gets visitors.

I’ve always had a fear that Disney might tear down Tarzan to build additional queueing for POTC (which it desperately needs).
It's still possible, but I think at the moment Disney hasn't because they don't want to spend the money.
It’s so sad Disney as a company has forgotten who and what they are.. just IMAGINE what we would have if the money these parks actually generated were put back into the parks instead of buying dying IPs and making and remaking doomed films.. it must have been an amazing place for creative people to work back in the day!!!

The Swiss Family Treehouse was such a special attraction , unlike any other in celebration of the original film! I believe it was a mistake to ever remove it in favor of a Tarzan treehouse? Disneyland thrives on a balance of classic & new attractions? Removing Splash Mountain has proven this point that eliminating classic attractions faces significant backlash & long term unhappiness among guests?
True, but if you never remove classic attractions, how can you build new ones to balance things out? Eventually each area of the park would run out of space. They have to take risks, and sometimes those risks don't pan out.
@@AlextheHistorian I still disagree to remove major classic attractions, especially because we no longer have the exceptional talents of Walt Disney to create something magical & unique that can replace extraordinary attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean? The current Disney company greatly lacks competent management & leadership or exceptional talent? The junk they decide to create from buying the rights of cartoon characters & old films such as Star Wars is hardly exceptional & certainly does not effectively replace classic attractions?
I'm just saying the concept of removing an attraction is not inherently bad. It's only bad when the thing they replace it with is worse than before.
Splash Mountain was not an original Walt era attraction. It dates back to 1989.

Yes I had to remove all my videos due to copyright issues, they are being re-done one by one to remove the issues and update the information in the videos.
@@AlextheHistorian I see. Now I understand. I'm surprised anyone would flag you for copyright issues. I thought educational material was considered fair use. Perhaps because there is advertising support for your page? Do you know?
Yeah I was using royalty-free music in my videos, but I got in an argument with the music creator because he labeled one song "copyright free" and then proceeded to copyright claim my video. I accused him of lying and he flagged all my videos with a take-down notice. If I had tried to appeal the take-down notice, I would have lost, because UA-cam usually sides with the original content creator.

Brominated water, not chlorinated. Just a fun fact.
Actually it is chlorine when it's outside. Bromine breaks down in sunlight so they don't use it in outdoor water features.

Did Disney staff actually tell you that? Because if you Google whether Disney uses bromine, every article and video site their source as Rob from Midway to Main Street, most people who tell me Disney uses bromine, also site Rob as their source. I asked Rob where he heard it, he told me a cast member told him. I was a cast member for 6 years and never saw a bromine label on any park filtration systems. I can still be wrong, but I recall seeing chlorine on the ones that were noticeably labeled.
@@AlextheHistorian ...the bromine is most definitely used in POTC. This is important bc the tree house water feature's in-take is somewhere in the Blue Bayou scene (not exactly sure which point). The water is literally only exposed to direct UV for a matter of minutes then returned to the BB scene. And as you know, that's 100s of thousands of gallons of water.
As for the hotel pools, I can't be 100% sure bc it was a different cast member in a different department and I don't know this person very well. I have no reason to believe they are lying, but as you know, sometimes CMs can get it wrong.
They ruined the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse with the Tarzan nonsense.
