    I've been going to my local Pier 1 Imports for the past 3 weeks and had no success... until TODAY! :) I scored 2 bags identical to the ones that you pulled out of that dumpster. Thank you for sharing this info Pete. I've been hoarding a few items that are tricky to ship and now I can finally list them.

    The bottom of the box... don't forget to put extra tape on the bottom of the box. Everybody double and triple tapes the top, but ignores the bottom. The bottom is the part that runs all over the place on conveyor belts in the distribution centers!

    "Use styrophone so it gets there in one place". Love the little language flubs. Great tips! I always ask store manager if i can take boxes and only once was told no. Dollar general and five below were best!

    Howdy Pete, I'm about to ship off a VCR bundled with extras via FedEx for the first time. Thank you for making this video 4 years ago. I'm watching 5 videos from 5 different Resellers. Then getting to it.

    Great video as always! The only thing I would suggest and I actually do is putting the item first in a plastic and seal it completely. In this way pieces of the packing like Styrofoam do not get on the product. And the plastic is an extra protection if the box gets wet for whatever reason. Thanks again.

    Another good place to find packing is in the garbage cans at usps, people get junk mail in their po boxes and throw it in the garbage. I even use the magazines, it takes some time to tear the pages out and crumple them but it works and it is free. The grocery store ads work the best. I wait till the postal workers leave at the end of their workday to get packing because they are a little bit weirded out that you might be trying to find personal information, post offices stay open for a few hours after the workers leave so people can get their mail from their po boxes.

    recycling without remanufacturing is super great idea. it is much like making friendly with your business neighbors in the 70's or earlier. Agree, spend some few extra minutes when selling something for few hundred bucks.btw, if items are surrounded in plastic--even a plastic grocery bag--a tulip lipstick for the "top" half and brown base for "bottom" an imprint can be made into the styro foam (without the lipstick plastic). everybody will learn tulip goes on top and brown goes on bottom. No struggle later and it alleviates need to use rulers or squares, etc. the edges of the items will leave an imprint.

    DAPS on the pier one! I have a FedEx express and side by side small office supply (computer and printer parts mainly) and a office deco store (chairs, tables, modern furniture). Packing material for days! Don't hesitate to ask shop owners / store managers either. Shipping materials is truly one mans trash is another mans treasure. This is a HUGE resource to save $$$ on.
    GREAT VIDEO THANKS AGAIN!

    • @OfftoShambala
      @OfftoShambala 8 років тому +1

      +B. Bond What is DAPS? Yeah, I like to use the big free chunks of styrofoam when I can get them (usually at Costco, where I work, but they don't have those often)... I'll definitely be taking both yours and Pete's suggestion for getting the big pieces of styrofoam, so thanks! However, I am currently getting a pretty decent deal on those humongus bags of popcorn at a local paper/office store in my area for about $25 and it saves A LOT of time when packaging stuff, but there is that cost factor and free is always worth striving for.
      At any rate, I have a method for packaging these types of items, similar to what Pete is doing here, but using narrow display boxes from Costco (usually the ones found in the laundry detergent section), so it's like the item is double boxed and I use a lot of popcorn with a minimum of 2", but 3" if I have the right box, on any one side of the item. Costco is a great source for boxes and I actually like the boxes that have no tops because it makes it easier to customize them actually.
      Full respect for Pete's professionalism here.

    • @BBond-pf2tu
      @BBond-pf2tu 8 років тому

      I agree, the popcorn is ideal! I'm now reminded when I worked at Staples briefly (before reselling personally) how much popcorn foam we went through...i'll be keeping that in mind while I'm supply picking.
      I have a slight guilt simply due to how "green" I've gotten my shipping process down. (green meaning recycling most materials and keeping money!).. guilt coming from how often I've come to use the free USPS boxes. The smallest of the Flat Rate boxes are great for gapping and filling. The added OZ's are something to note although whit this method.
      I'm coming to find the full box customization like in this clip (Pete really is so helpful) is actually preferred like you said with the open boxes.

    • @OfftoShambala
      @OfftoShambala 8 років тому

      B. Bond Yep, I think we are ALL for recycling these packing supplies for eco's, if not for the economics. BTW, my resource for peanuts offers the eco friendly peanuts that I think are biodegradable for a few dollars LESS than the white styros, which is awesome. I get them for around $23 per big humongus bag and it lasts quite a while, but my resource runs out a lot and I tend to run in last minute and have to get the evil white ones. I try to stay ahead, but it's just not always possible.
      Anyways, I should add, that I typically use those big styrofoam chunks as fillers in between the peanuts to further cut down on costs, sometimes I have to cut them down, but I only use them on the more fragile items... some items still "need" some level of cushy, absorption protection, but not as much, if that makes any sense... and I take regular newspaper that I get for free and do like a half and half popcorn and crumpled paper to fill in the box, but it is way more time consuming than just filling the box with popcorn.
      Another thing I would like to mention for anyone reading this is that if a buyer were to want to return an item like this, it is more likely that they would repackage it right, so none of this is about dissing Pete's method.

    @tomleech9753 6 років тому +1

    If you have access to this much sytrofoam, and in the size and shape that you need, sure this works. I use envelopes. Bubble envelopes. I take a bubble envelope, stuff it with paper, and by paper I mean, I have rolls of kraft paper that you can get from uline or smart and final, or sams club/costco, and crumple a couple dozen feet of that right off the roll, wind it into a flat coil, and stick it in the envelope. Do this 6 times. Put one on each side, then seal the recycled box. :) I ship stereos like that often and I've never gotten a return.

    Great video and I never thought of heating up the knife for cutting Styrofoam. I've used an electric knife also and it does fairly good, but still messy. Just like another commenter, I would agree that you should have first placed the electronics item in a plastic bag. If that gets dropped off a truck or left outside in pouring rain, it's gonna be wet and possibly ruined.

    I dont think you want to breath in the styrofoam fumes or the millions of particles from sawing. You could bubble and then box the item. Then get another box and "double box" with at least a 3 inch space on every side. Fill the bottom first with shipping peanuts and place the box inside. Have the inner box well centered, then fill the sides and top tight with shipping peanuts. Styrofoam pieces would be OK to fill in some of the gaps in both boxes, but I still wouldnt saw or melt the pieces. Just break them apart once or twice. If you notice lots of particles when breaking pieces, dont use it.
    Also, do it outside or with the garage door open.
    There are tons of quality cardboard boxes inside Wal-Mart after 12:30AM.
    They stock the shelves from around Midnight to 2am and boxes are thrown around the aisles.

    Could you please show sometime how you would pack a slightly oversize photo such as an autographed 11x14 collectible picture. Would you pack it flat such as in a toploader sandwiched between layers and then slipped in a flat priority mail box with lots of tape . or would you ship rolled in a tube and nested in a second box. I know some buyers don;t like rolled in tubes .. but the flat shipping of 11x14 or 16x20 signed and authenticated photos is a real challenge especially when they are worth .. like $200plus. Thanks in advance.

Money then ordered the flat rate shipping boxes thru post office and ordered a scale to weigh things cuz ain't it cheaper to weigh your own item pack in your own box then to use the flat rate shipping I can't figure out which is the cheapest way to ship please make a video on it or just answer me how is the best way to ship cheapest way to ship general small items books knick knacks perfume tools whatever it may be ? I want to spend least as possible and is it better to make ebay listings that say free shipping ? And include ur shipping in the price of item or have the item show up cheaper and charge for shipping ?? Which is more attractive to make sells ???? Please help or anyone else reading this !!!! Thanks in advanced !

      @CC-ed7od 5 років тому

      @@southernvibezzz4931 for larger heavier items going further, always check pirateship rates. If you have a recycle place, check that for free foam, wrap, boxes. I always use bags or plastic wrap to protect items from moisture, then pad well if fragile. I charge shipping on everything, that way I'm out less $ if I get a return. I weigh item and add a pound or so if fragile. Then measure and add a couple or more inches to each measurement. Use calculated shipping - under 16 oz cam go 1st class which is uninsured and must be in your own box or bag. Over 16 oz is Priority and you can use USPS boxes, but be sure if you use a flat rate box or envelope that you choose flat rate shipping on the listing. Perfume must go ground. I use plastic wrap around the bottle to keep the lid on, then tissue, bubble wrap good to make tight in the box. Ground costs more, always over $7 for me, and again you must choose ground when making the listing and word the description so people expect it to take a bit longer. No overseas sales on perfume since it must go ground. I also don't sell / ship perfume in the heat of the summer, I do fall winter spring up through mothers day. Holidays are best for perfumes anyway because prices go up, just like textbooks when classes are about to start. Shipping is a learning curve for sure, but you can search youtube on shipping (insert item name in search) to learn how others do it.

    • @CC-ed7od
      @CC-ed7od 5 років тому

      I use a lot of recycled plain smaller boxes to mail first class (under 16 oz) for jewelry and perfume (ground only), flatter boxes for books (and use media mail to ship - and add isurance if it's an expensive book, or priority) - USPS boxes mostly shoe and game boxes (mailing boxes not flat rate) & padded flat rates in regular and legal sizes. I usually only have to buy tape.

    Wow Ive really learned a lot with this video, I always wondered how to pack these things I would sell and this is why I have not done any mailing sales, so far just pick ups or meet ups and this has limited the range in which I could sell an item for as well as the money making ability because someone in Michigan may be more prone to pay more for my product than someone who lives 5 minutes away from me if they were really interested in the item ... etc... Thanks for sharing your wisdom! Next time I drive through a Pier One I'll make a stop towards the back. I just hope some idiot doesn't come out and tells me ...
