- Wanted to make a video showing a little bit of what I do full time as well as officially go in depth on the products we've been helping develop at Backwoods. We designed the industry's first true hybrid bumper system, which uses a steel winch cradle and an aluminum outer shell. This makes for a both strong and super lightweight bumper, which is the perfect solution for overlanding applications.
We currently produce front and rear high clearance bumpers for 5th gen 4Runners and 3rd gen Tacomas.

Great video. My roof rack and top lights setup just got done. Just started research into all the bumper options. Great walkthrough and no-nonsense. Much appreciated, and will be digging in further. Any plans for an option for a flip-down table on the inside of the swingouts on the rear bumper?

I have a 2017 Tacoma that I put your Backwoods Adventure Mod front bumper on with the bull guard and it's been a big upgrade to my ride. I also have the big round white lights and amber fog lights. I have tested this bumper in both the Eastern and Western Sierra Nevada over thousands of miles in the past 6 months; I have a winch in the winch cradle and have practice winched several times and it functions as expected. Very solid bumper that doesn't weigh much. I was in a white out blizzard at 3K feet in Mariposa county last March and I put the big round lights on, Boom! I could see a quarter mile ahead in the storm! In the city, the vehicle has more presence on the road that demands respect from the ghetto peoples. Win/Win. Great bumper.

Had one on my Tacoma for over a year and took it through some pretty nasty stuff. That is bumper was absolutely amazing. Hopefully we see one for the third Gen tundra so I can get one for my new truck 💪🏻 love backwoods

It’s a sweet bumper and looks legit but for the 22’ Tacomas the power steering cooler is rite in the way of the winch cradle and backwoods does not supply a bracket to relocate the cooler back towards the radiator a inch or so, so I had to buy another company’s bracket just to make it work. That being said backwoods stood behind their product 100% and offered to take it back no charge but I loved the look and was already in deep so I made it work just took a little more work, so just a heads up on the 22+ Tacoma’s out there👍
Appreciate the kind words! Interesting though. Our shop Tacoma is a 22 and we had no issues at all. Wonder why there was a difference. We haven’t heard that before.

This year we are getting gears and lockers. Next year the Tacoma is go the full Backwoods Adventure Mods treatment! Front and rear bumpers and full skids 👍🏼

I’ve had the same front bumper for the last 10 months & love it for the most part but after one Canadian winter the winch cradle is pretty rusty already… so not very impressed with that for the price I paid.

My 10 year old steel ARB bumper on my jeep is fairing much better… just saying

The only issue that I have with this myself I live in heavy deer country and that is why I have lean more towards the ARB although very heavy and a lot more bulky I just don't see that aluminum outer shell holding up to a deer
That makes sense. But the center core is all steel and takes a direct impact much better than traditional full aluminum bumpers. This bumper isn't for everyone, but is a great option for most people.

i wish someone made a good bumper like this for the 2019+ silverado 1500 diesels. and or even the dual swingout rear bumper or a swingout bumper
12:27 tell me about that table. Not having a table back there is rough.
Maybe they are in the progress of changing things but I saw that on the website the rear bumper doesn’t have the dual arm swing out options just a standard high clearance.
The problem I find with smaller aftermarket bumper companies it’s a pay first and wait months to get. I am a cash and carry type but willing to put money down and pay the rest when it arrives. Now I have a Gobi rack on my 4Runner you ordered it the built it then you paid before it ships. I getting ready to build a 3rd gen taco so doing research and what avenues I need to go for options.
I love the idea of this bumper but your only offering for 5th gen 4runners and 3rd gen tacomas within the toyota community. Do yall plan to expand to the other generation 4runners, tacomas and tundras?

Great question. One we get often. We’ve had customers in accidents, animal strikes, head on collisions, just about everything. They’re by far stronger than an all aluminum bumper, but nothing compares to an all steel bumper. My buddy hit a dear going 70 in his Tacoma with this bumper. Had to get a new hood and some headlights and a new outer shell for the bumper, but vehicle wasn’t totaled or anything. He’s back on the road. The center where all the steel is behind everything is surprisingly strong. Hard to fully answer your question. Depends on speed, animal size, etc. Hope this helps!

@Arkansas Offroad Question/Request/Money making suggestion, and I'd love to be the guinea pig; Backwoods has an awesome rear 3rd gen bumper, and with some mod, it can fill another major void in the market for 3rd gen tacomas and other trucks. I have a Four Wheel Pop Up Camper on my Tacoma (tricked out). Unfortunately, it, as do they all, sticks out about 6" past the tail light and thus obviously past just about any aftermarket bumper, and I assume past yours too. This makes using a hi lift jack, or swing outs on an aftermarket bumper, impossible. Ask any FWCamper owner if this bothers them and you will find that it MORE than bothers. Solution: Produce a model of your bumper that extends the additional 6" (I have other suggestions for such a bumper that would enhance its functionality for the these Campers, as well as those from other manufacturers, in a major way!). Perk it up another notch by incorporating functional internal mounts and ABS platic corners that allow the rear backup sensors to remain functional. So, what do you think?

I like how light they are. I’ve been watching since the beginning of your work with them and really wish I didn’t live in Honolulu and could get a more durable bumper for my Dad’s 2017 DCSB 4x2 4-cyl. He has scratched the heck out of his 3rd Gen as he drove a 1995 Tacoma until it died in 2017. So the largeness of the 3rd Gen is something he isn’t quite used to yet.
Do you have any designs without a steel winch plate, as he doesn’t need one.
Appreciate that. Unfortunately we don’t have any other designs than what’s offered. It’s worked so well for us.

Love the bumpers man. However, was curious about the wheels and rims. Could u tell me what size and brand rims and tires? I have a 2017 tacoma with a 3 inch front,2 inch rear,leveling kit. And am looking for a tire setuo like yours. Would it fit my truck,in its current height?
will this hi lite bumper with triple hoop affect Toyota safety sense and will the fog pockets accommodate my factory led fog lights. thanks for sharing 2023 off road tacoma
It will not affect TSS. And the factory fogs are designed to fit the factory bumper bezel. It won't fit. Just about any aftermarket pod light will.

I was looking at your skid plates. Does the aluminum seem to stand up to rocks pretty well?
It’s not as good as steel, but still protects your undercarriage. Depends how hard you wheel. For repeated abuse, steel is a better option but much heavier. For every day driving and moderate protection at much less weight, aluminum is better.

We’ve definitely discussed it and would love to. But it’s different enough to change just about everything. Our jigs, cut patterns, bend programs, etc. Seems like a simple product but it’s the same as starting on a new product. I actually almost got a 2nd gen myself before getting this one. Who knows, maybe one day we will

At the end of the day im mostly worried about deer strikes and that big hole in front of the grille is just gonna let a deer right in looks awesome but not functional in my humble opinion

Do you know how it's going to hold up if I accidentally hit a deer? That's the primary reason why I'm getting it, besides the ability to mount better lights and the fact that it looks cool and it won't rust like most of the bumpers out there. Thanks 👍
@@darrenadams6861 Awesome! Yeah, 20% is the biggest weve ever done. Pretty sweet deal. So this bumper is sort of a middle ground. The steel winch cradle will protect the core of your frame/truck and is super strong. The shell is the weakest, but lightest part. It all depends on how hard you hit something. We've seen customers hit head on going 60mph plus. At that speed, no bumper will save you. There will always be damage somewhere, the airbags will deploy, etc. A buddy of mine in Montana has our bull bar bumper and he hit a deer going 70. We just sent him a new shell and he was good to go. He retained his steel winch cradle, but had to get new headlights and some factory bumper components.

@@ArkansasOffroad Hey Grant, just a quick question. Does backwoods have a skid plate for the 3rd gen Tacoma that matches their connector plate, if not would you be able to recommend one? Also what fairlead would you recommend? I'm holding off on getting a winch until next year but I think the bumper might look better with a fairlead. Thanks again.
Is it fair to say that NO ONE is doing an aluminum steel bumper? Perhaps it's not exactly the same but BAMF came out with one for 3rd gen a while ago.
There may be some now, but we’ve been doing this with our van bumpers for 5+ years now
you took the SWAY BAR off the truck to install the mount reinforcements?? that is going to make the truck dangerously unstable at highway speeds.
The mount reinforcements are made to be used with the sway bar, but I have had mine removed for over 3 years. My truck feels amazing and very planted with my setup.
These guys wont let me buy just their winch cradle. I thought it would be cool to do that, then have the option of the full bumper later. Apparently they "cant" do that. Talk about a missed opportunity. Really wanted to support local since I live in Springdale, but oh well

They sold me a trailready bumper last labor day weekend sale for $3000 2 months after I paid for the bumper in full they sent me a email saying the sale was over and the wanted $400 more for the bumper. I told them I had paid in full and I wasn't going to give them any money and that was the last I talked to them. They never sent me the bumper I paid for and deleted my reviews from the website. What a wast of time and money

their bumpers are overpriced, who the fuck is going to pay 3500+
It’s right on par for other swing outs. A lot of them appear cheaper, but that’s bare bones. No powder coat, no swing outs, no accessories. We price ours fully built out with power coat included to be transparent up front. At the end of the day, most high clearance dual swing outs are easily 3000+ if you do a little shopping.
