Back in the olden days when I was in high school, flipping the air filter lid was quite popular amongst us young motor heads. The lidded air filter has gone the way of the Dodo!
I tested the 52 Merc without the air cleaner. I don't recall much different sound but it did seem to have more power. I think the old oil bath air cleaner is a bit restricting.
It ain't the secondary that's sounds like that.... Two barrel and tbi makes the same tone under load with the open air filter. it's just the sound of a 5.0 liter V8 gulping air through little wholes

I guess there is not much you can do under the hood of the new ones.. The old vehicles are more fun.
I did the same, I was 17 had a Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 2 door, with a 275 V8 ~~still slow

Yes the quadrajets have been good to me. The economy of a two barrel with the awesome sound and power available anytime you put your right foot down.
I love the quadrajets, highly underrated carburetor. They do best with both worlds honestly, economy and power. A properly tuned quad is hard to beat.
Yes, I can't say anything bad about the quadrajets. This one and the one on my 81 GMC both perform very well.
Ralph, I ran my flathead around the block without the air cleaner once, it sounded good sucking all that air.

Oh really? Well now I''m going to have to test out that theory before I believe it. And by the way, this Eldorado is a 7 litre.
